Finally ruling on a hearing held in early December, Judge Koh decided that Apple's billion-dollar verdict won't be getting any bigger - having formally ruled that Samsung did not infringe Apple's patents willfully. Willful infringement is a concept in patent law that is largely self-explanatory (at least in a non-technical sense): did the defendant purposefully or with wanton disregard for obvious risk infringe the plaintiff's patents?

The jury in this trial held that Samsung did willfully infringe.

If you own a French RAZR i, time to start hitting that 'check update' button. The update to Android 4.1.2 is officially beginning to roll out, and in Q1 2013 - as promised.

If you want the update right now, but are afraid of losing root, there's good news on that front, too: you can. The new root instructions and files are located here. An updated, pre-rooted fastboot file can be found here, which should put your unlocked RAZR i on French firmware.

If you're a T-Mobile customer with an LTE-enabled phone (with Band 4 connectivity) in the Kansas City area, you may be able to pull down some four-gee goodness starting today. Over at XDA, one member has managed to establish an LTE connection with his unlocked AT&T Galaxy Note, which supports Band 4 LTE. Speed test results and connection info follow.

While the speed isn't particularly impressive right now, T-Mobile's LTE is likely in late pre-launch testing in this market, so the switch may not be fully flipped just yet.

PhoneArena has obtained an image of something that definitely looks like it could be a white Nexus 4. Here's the photo in question.

CAM00107-jpg

The quality isn't fantastic, but what we're looking at does appear to be a Nexus 4 that's been through a serious bleaching. The reflective pores are still present (see the bottom-right of the photo), and the camera module now appears to have a slightly visible border. This may just be a result of the fact that the white color shows the outline more clearly.

According to Bloomberg, the US Department of Justice has just announced that it will submit a deferment request for the Sprint / Softbank merger to the FCC. Telecom acquisitions in the United States require approval from both the DoJ and the FCC, with the former agency focusing largely on potential anti-trust issues. Softbank officially announced the buyout in October.

It's not exactly a big surprise that the DoJ is looking at this deal cautiously.

The Nexus 4 is back in stock on the US Play Store (both the 8GB and 16GB models), as predicted. So, if you want one, go buy it. Now. HURRY. Oh, and the bumper case is available too. The Nexus 4 is also in stock in the German Play Store, though bumper cases do not appear to be available in Deutschland.

Update: Looks like sales are now live in Canada, as well.

It seems HTC has all but officially decided to drop its practice of unveiling its new handset lineup at MWC this year, scheduling press events mere days before the beginning of the mobile trade show. The company has sent out invitations to events in both New York City and London on February 19th, though it has provided no indication as to exactly what will be unveiled.

However, it seems a given at this point that we'll be seeing HTC's new flagship Android handset, codenamed M7.

Google Wallet received its first significant update in a while today, with a mildly refreshed UI, bug fixes, but no new features. In fact, as Ron points out, references to all the features we were excited about having actually been removed from the app. Like the Wallet Card, and P2P money transfers. It doesn't mean those ideas are dead, per se, but we would guess it does mean they're experiencing some delays.

Update: The Best Buy page is live and taking orders right now - estimated shipping is 3-5 days. No sign of handsets being sold in-store, unfortunately (no in-store pickup either).

If you're one of many of us in the US still seeking out a Nexus 4, it appears another purchasing option may be springing up shortly, at everyone's favorite defunct-business-model brick and mortar electronics retailer. That'd be Best Buy, in case the allusion wasn't clear, where a listing for the newest Nexus handset has just appeared.

We just received a reliable tip that Verizon has officially discontinued the 32GB flavor of the Galaxy S III, among other Android handsets. Final shipments of the 32GB GSIII have already been received from Samsung, meaning you can expect the remaining stock to dry up over the next month or two (so you'll be able to find it for a while yet). The 16GB Galaxy S III will continue to be available.
