Samsung has finally made an official statement regarding its plans to upgrade current handsets to Ice Cream Sandwich (Android version 4.0), and the short list is indeed quite short:
In a court filing last night demanding an early trial date for the ongoing Google v. Oracle patent litigation, Oracle claims that Android is now irreparably harming Java's market share in the mobile, TV, and tablet space. Oracle says that these are areas where Java "has traditionally been strong." News to us.
The blogosphere is currently aflutter with talk of the ITC (International Trade Commission) patent infringement decision in favor of Apple, and the resulting court order banning the import of infringing HTC devices starting April 19, 2012 (4 months from now). The ITC ruled that HTC infringed on two, relatively narrow claims in a patent related to "data tapping" that occurs at the system level in Android.
It's official: AT&T-Mobile will not be happening any time soon. AT&T, the US's second-largest wireless carrier and all-around communications mega-corporation, after months of attempting to convince consumers and federal agencies alike that the deal was going to be good for everyone, has given up its plans to purchase T-Mobile, a division of Deutsche Telekom.

Another day, another giveaway. Today, we're holding another one of our "lightning" giveaways, which will continue until tomorrow, December 18th at 11:59PM PST. For your consideration, we have two Archos tablets: the Archos 80 G9, and the 101 G9. Both come in the 8GB "Classic" trim and are equipped with TI OMAP4 1GHz dual-core processors, Android 3.2 Honeycomb, and allow for up to 7 hours of video playback. They're both equipped with kickstands as well, so there's no need to go buy a costly tablet folio to enjoy some hands-free video watching. The Toshiba Thrive and I don't exactly have a great history. And that's probably putting it mildly. In fact, in my first review of Toshiba's first Tegra 2 tablet (yes, I had to write a second one) earlier this year, I panned it so hard that I basically just started textually abusing the poor thing. So, at the behest of commenters and colleagues, I rewrote it. My revised review (here) was a little less harsh, but I'll be the first to admit: I didn't like the Thrive, and after spending even more time with it after the review, my feelings were unchanged.
Our final giveaway today is another of our developer-oriented contests, and we're giving ten copies of the massive programming reference book Android Wireless Application Development by Shane Conder and Lauren Darcey, thanks to our friends at InformIT. Oh, you thought we'd be doing just one mega-holiday giveaway a day for ten days? You thought wrong. Now, we realize the first contest we held today was for our US readers only, so we're going to give the international crowd some love with this one. You can thank our friends over at NVIDIA who are always happy to offer some Tegra-powered awesomeness to our worldwide audience, this time in the form of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 32GB Wi-Fi edition. First off, this is all in good fun. Any intelligent person could draw the conclusions this author did based on what was happening at the time, and with the limited information available about Google's plans for Android. We're posting this because it's funny to look back on it with some hindsight.
