Verizon FTW: Droid Eris 2.1 Update ‘Coming Soon’

I guess Sprint was feeling a bit lonely: Verizon has recently revealed on their official support site for the Droid Eris that users can expect an update to 2.1 ‘soon’. Unfortunately, they don’t offer a more specific time table, but they do provide documents both detailing the benefits of upgrading as well as instructions on how to do so, which is definitely reassuring.

Reading through the documents provided, it looks like Verizon is going to deliver the update over-the-air, as well as require the user to wipe the device. Exactly how thorough of a wipe will be required is unclear, but they do mention that you will lose your contacts (though they are easily resync’d) and that while you will also lose the Verizon Visual Voicemail application and some system settings, it’s implied that applications downloaded and installed from the Market should be preserved.

Clear Reveals Two New Wi-Max Equipped Android Phones To Be Released In 2010

Corporate press releases are usually pretty boring. Corporate press releases about quarterly earnings? Well, they’re a one way ticket to snoozeville for sure, but every now and then you glean a little nugget of information that rewards you for slogging through the PR babble. In this case, Sprint’s 4G partner Clear has let slip that we can expect both HTC and Samsung to release Android powered handsets with Wi-Max on board by the end of this year.

Seeing as how this is a press release put out by Clear’s corporate office, it’s pretty hard to doubt its veracity. There aren’t many details on the offerings other than they’re both going to be equipped with 3G/4G and WiFi and that the Samsung phone will be ‘optimized for heavy video and video communications use’.

Evo 4G Available For Pre-Order At The Shack Later This Month?

I spent about 15 minutes trying to figure out how I could open this post with a joke about Radio Shack’s abysmal name change to ‘The Shack’, but figured it’s well trodden ground at this point, so let’s just skip to the juicy bits: it appears that the gents over at Phandroid have been tipped off by an employee at the aforementioned Shack that Sprint’s Evo 4G should be available for pre-order by the end of this month.

It’s not exactly an outrageous claim, considering that the phone’s had a summer release date set since the beginning, and this lines up nicely with the previously speculated June 6th-13th launch time frame.

Less Droid, More Iron Man – Tony Stark Confirms The LG Ally For Verizon

You have to hand it to Verizon’s marketing department – out of all of the carriers pushing Android, their ads have been the most compelling.

Verizon continues their Android advertising legacy with a departure from the ‘Droid Does’ campaign in order to use the Iron Man 2 release to pimp their latest Android phone – the LG Ally. What’s that? You haven’t heard of the Ally? What about the LG Aloha? Or, its considerably less glamorous name LG LU2300. Still nothing?

OK, forget names, let’s talk specs. You like the Snapdragon processor, right? Well, what if I told you that the Ally not only packs a 1GHz Snapdragon, but a qwerty keyboard as well?

Sprint Evo 4G Spotted At Florida Store – Did The ‘Free’ Price Give The Photographer A Seizure?

What have we here: it looks like a user over at the ppcgeeks forums has nabbed himself a picture of an Evo 4G sitting pretty at a corporate Sprint store in Florida. Granted the picture is so blurry that it looks more like a Jackson Pollack painting than a spy-shot, but we’ll take what we can get.

Of course, with pictures like this, you always want to take things with a grain of salt - the blurrier the shot is, the easier it is to hide any digital alterations and in this case, there are plenty of reasons to doubt the veracity of this image:

It’s low quality
The forum poster has since removed it
It was posted on a forum to begin with
It was hanging out in a store, yet there’s not even a release date?

Google has finally released the last of the accessories for its first foray into the mobile handset market, the Nexus One. Shortly after the Nexus One was announced, we were graced with the desktop dock - a simple, yet functional device that takes advantage of the metal contacts on the bottom of the phone to allow charging and audio playback without the need to mess with pesky wires.

We’ve been teased with the prospect of a car dock in promotional videos, such as this one, but were never given a target date. Well, as of a couple of weeks ago, if you had $60 USD to spare, you could find yourself to be a proud owner of a genuine Nexus One Car Dock.

The Leaks Continue – Meet The Dell Flash And The Dell Smoke

Engadget’s leaked a few more Dell phones that just might steal the just announced Thunder’s… well, thunder (that’s the last one, I swear). This time we’re focusing on two handsets that are confirmed to run Froyo and mix things up bit when it comes to form factor.

Dell’s Smoke is a qwerty candybar with an 800MHz CPU, a 5MP autofocus camera, 14.4Mbps HSPA and dual-mic noise cancelling technology. It also packs Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1+ EDR, much to the surprise of no one. You can count on a 2.8 inch QVGA display atop what looks to me like an especially cramped set of keys in a package no thicker than 12mm.

Dell Sets The Stage With Their New Android UI – Will Include Flash... And Run Froyo?

Finally, a decent Android skin that isn’t HTC’s Sense UI. Along with a few details about Dell’s newest superphones, we’ve been treated with plenty of information about their custom Android skin, dubbed Stage UI.

It seems that, initially at least, this new UI will be exclusive to Dell’s newly leaked trio of high-end Android phones, the Thunder, the Flash, and the Smoke. At this point there’s a bit of confusion as to which version of Android the Stage UI will be based on, with Engadget reporting that the Thunder will run Flash and Android 2.1 and the other two phones set to run Froyo.

Break Out Those Drool Buckets: Dell Brings The Thunder

Holy Android sexiness Batman. Engadget has just busted out some glorious details and renders of the upcoming Dell Thunder – an Android superphone that certainly lives up to the title.

I was a bit taken aback by the announcement – as far as we knew, the only Android phones in Dell’s pipeline were the previously announced Streak and Aero, both of which are interesting, but not nearly as appealing as the Thunder. By the way, I really hope that’s a codename, if for no other reason than to avoid puns like “Hey, did you bring the thunder?”. Ba dum, TSH.

The specs are shaping up to be quite promising, based on what we know so far…which isn’t much.

HTC Gives T-Mobile myTouch Slide's Sense UI An Espresso Boost

The T-Mobile MyTouch Slide just can’t get enough of the camera. We’ve already seen it in three color configurations, and now the good gents at TmoNews have let loose some screenshots of the [sexy?] new HTC Sense revamp, dubbed Espresso.

I’m not sure I’m exactly thrilled with the new ‘bubbly’ icons that they’re using – in my opinion it gives them a cheap, and quite literally, plastic look. They seem to be pushing wood grain and warmer, natural colors in this version over the more industrial/streamlined/modern look of the current HTC Sense UI.
