Barnes & Nobile Announces Google Play For The Nook HD And HD+, Inches Them Closer To 'Real Tablet' Status

It's no secret that I've long been against calling the Nook and Kindle Fire series "Android tablets," as neither is more than a glorified e-reader to me. Today, Barnes & Noble dropped a bomb on that way of thinking, as it announced that the full array of Google Play services will now be available on the Nook HD and Nook HD+, essentially turning them into full-fledged tablets.

Moving forward, all Nook HD and HD+ tablets will ship with Google services – including the Play Store, YouTube, Gmail, Chrome, and the like – but for those who already own HD/HD+ units, the new features will be showing up via an OTA update to v2.1.0, which should begin rolling out today.

[Update: Already Available] AT&T's Galaxy Note Android 4.1.2 Update Rolling Out On May 3rd Via Kies

Verizon just started pushing Android 4.1.2 to the Galaxy Note II. AT&T will start offering that same update to the original Note tomorrow, May 3rd.

Update: The word on the street is that this update is already available through Kies. Hook up and get it!

While the Android version bump is the same, however, everything else about this one is quite a bit different. Here's what you an expect post-update:

Software update includes

  • Popup note: Allows user to instantly write down directions, phone numbers, and other information while on a call.
  • Popup Video and Browser: Allows user to watch video or browse the web while performing other tasks.

Put That Tired Old Wii Balance Board Back To Work With FitScales, An App That Turns It Into A Useful Bluetooth Internet-Connected Scale

So you got into the whole workout-on-the-Wii fad a while back, but now the Balance Board just hangs out in the corner, collecting dust. What a waste. You could choose to let it continue to clutter up your living room, or you could get it out, blow the dust off of it, and connect it to your Android phone or tablet. What?!

Thanks to an app called FitScales, that process is actually made incredibly simple. Just install the app, fire it up, and follow the on-screen instructions to get it synced up with your Android device. From there, the app can integrate with Fitbit and/or Runkeeper.

Instagram Updated To v3.5, Introduces 'Photos Of You' Tagging Feature

For a photo sharing app, Instagram has long been missing one key feature: in-picture tagging. Fret no more, pic-a-holics (or stalkers) – as of today's update to v3.5, the desire to find out who someone is a given picture is just got a little easier to satisfy thanks to the app's new "Photos of You" feature.

In a nutshell, it's just like Facebook's tagging option: upload a photo, go through the typical filter features and social options, and tag away. You can even start tagging people in your past photos – just open the image and tap on the menu button, select the option to "add people," and that's pretty much it.

LevelUp Studio Releases A Free Version Of Beautiful Widgets, Gives You Basic Functionality For The Cost Of Nothing

Allow me to be frank for a moment: Beautiful Widgets is one of my most-used, longest-installed widgets since I started using Android. I actually bought it on my OG Droid back in the day, and have literally used it on every device I've owned since then. One of my favorite things about it is the developer – LevelUp Studio does an absolutely fantastic job of not only updating the app, but adding new features fairly often. This app has really grown up over the last few years.

But now, there's also a free version. This is perfect for new Android users or those who live in a country that may not yet allow the purchasing of apps.

This update also brings some Samsung enhancements like a proper version of multi-window, along with overall bug fixes and enhancements. Overall, it looks like a pretty good one for Big Red's note-taking behemoth.

BBC Finally Takes Its Sport App Outside The UK, Now Available To Users Worldwide

Many moons ago (read: back in February), the BBC released a sport app for people who are in to that sort of thing. People rejoiced, birds sang, rainbows formed, yadda yadda, yadda... then the whole world realized the app was only for UK residents. Everything went dark. Storms brewed across nations, wars broke out, and hate consumed the very souls of those affected by the tragedy. It was the beginning of the end.

AT&T Makes The LG Optimus G Pro Official, Available Beginning May 10 For $199

We've known about LG's NYC event that's happening today for, well, a while now. We've also basically known that it's going to be about the Optimus G Pro here in the US, and that the device would likely be coming to AT&T.

Looks like all the "rumors" were true (we definitely didn't already know that... right?) because AT&T just officially announced the G Pro. For those unfamiliar with the device, it's LG's Note competitor, and it's quite the beastly little (big) gadget:

  • 5.5" 1080p IPS Display (440 PPI)
  • 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor
  • 2GB RAM
  • 32GB built-in storage, microSD card slot
  • 13MP rear shooter, 2.1MP front camera
  • 3,140mAh battery
  • Android 4.1.2

The G Pro will hit AT&T shelves on May 10th for $199 with a two-year agreement, but if you want to secure this next-gen behemoth before that, pre-orders will start on May 3rd.
