Sprint Pushing Small OTA Updates To The Flash And Epic 4G Touch

A couple of small OTA updates - both of which are primarily bug-fixers - are making their way to the Flash and Epic 4G Touch on Sprint this morning.

Flash owners, you can expect LED blink timing improvements, camera enhancements, better text input with Swype, and a tweak to the information provided in Settings > Applications > Running applications.

The list is actually shorter for the Epic 4G Touch, with only two things in the OTA: it adds Sprint's Connection Optimizer, and brings some security updates. Exciting, I know.

You can see if the update is available on either device by heading into Settings > About phone > System Updates > Update firmware.

Synology Releases DS Cloud, Lets You Sync Files From Your NAS For Offline Viewing On Your Android Device

Last week, Synology released a couple of new beta apps – DS Download and DS Video – for owners of its NAS boxes. Now it's added a third app, called DS Cloud, that allows Synology NAS owners to sync files to their Android device for offline viewing.

DS Cloud seems quite useful, as it lets you select certain files and folders you want to sync, as well as per-folder behavior, which basically ensures you always have the most recent version on your device (I wish Dropbox could do this!). You can also only allow it to sync over Wi-Fi, and quickly access files that have been recently updated.

Green Dot Announces 'GoBank', An Online-Only, Smartphone-Centric Take On The Traditional Banking System

Did you know it's national "new mobile banking day?" Because I surely didn't. First, Simple brought its online-only banking setup to Android, and now Green Dot has announced its own bank, which was designed from the ground up specifically for smartphones. Intriguing, no?

GoBank is pretty similar to Simple in a few new ways: it's online only, designed for mobile use, and turns the traditional banking system on its head. From there, though, GoBank branches off and does its own thing. For example, you can choose how much your monthly fees are – from nothing at all to $9 a month.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (N8013) Now Getting Jelly Bean 4.1.2 (UEUCMA3) In The U.S.

A few days ago, Samsung starting pushing Android 4.1.1 to the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and 7.0 here in the U.S. Almost immediately we heard a collective shriek from Note 10.1 owners, as they realized that their flagship device was still stuck on 4.0.x.

Well, guys, relax: Samsung's not only hooking you up with Jelly Bean, but it's doing one better by bringing 4.1.2 (build JZO54K) to the table. That's right – none of that .1 business, it's the best that 4.1 has to offer.

The update's rolling out now OTA to Wi-Fi models, but it should also be available via Kies.

Online Bank 'Simple' Finally Releases Its Android App, And Man Is It Pretty

Simple, the online bank co-founded by Twitter engineer Alex Payne, has been a long time coming (to Android, anyway). The service was actually announced a couple of years ago, with the iOS app arriving about eight months ago. And now it's finally our turn.

From the looks of the app, it appears the wait was worthwhile – instead of just cloning the iPhone app, Simple knew that Android users would want a native experience. So that's what they've given us. With the help of mobile development firm Two Toasters, Simple started from scratch with its Android app – and it shows.

Root Toolkit Now Available For The Samsung Galaxy Camera

If you're one of the few who dropped the coin and got a Samsung Galaxy Camera, good news: the Galaxy Camera toolkit is available now over at XDA. This comes from developer mskip, who is also responsible for the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7, Nexus 4, and Nexus 10 toolkits, so you can rest assured that it is about as stable and secure as they come.

With the software, you can easily install drivers, root the camera, perform a full Nandroid backup, and so much more:

  • Install drivers automatically
  • Backup/Restore a single package or all apps, user data and Internal Storage
  • Backup your /data/media (virtual SD Card) to your PC for a Full Safe backup of data
  • Root any public build (different options)
  • Flash Stock Recovery image to device
  • Perform a FULL NANDROID Backup of your system via adb and save in Custom Recovery format on your PC
  • Pull /data and /system folders, compress to a .tar file and save to your PC
  • Auto Update ToolKit on startup (donators feature)
  • Dump selected Partitions, compress to a .zip file with md5 and save to your PC
  • Install BusyBox binary on device

  • Change background, text colour in ToolKit

Google Confirms Bluetooth A2DP Audio Streaming Fix For The 'Next Release' Of Android 4.2

While Android 4.2 may have brought a number of enhancements, it also brought its fair share of issues to the platform. Among those, there has been a real problem with Bluetooth – especially when it comes to A2DP streaming audio. Basically, audio lags and cuts out constantly, making a streaming experience far more frustrating than enjoyable.

Good news, though – Google has just confirmed that this issue will be fixed "in the next release," which should be Android 4.2.2. Here's to hoping this fix also has a positive effect on other Bluetooth devices – like game controllers and the like (most of which simply don't work on 4.2).

Samsung's Galaxy Rugby Pro On AT&T Getting The Bump To Android 4.1

Back in September, Samsung announced a new ruggedized mid-ranger for AT&T: the Galaxy Rugby Pro. Now, that phone you probably don't remember is getting Jelly Bean. It's pretty weird.

The update, which bumps this rough-and-tumble handset up to Android 4.1, brings many good things for the device, like Google Now and Project Butter, but it also includes some other enhancements and fixes:

  • Camera enhancements: New live camera and camcorder filters offer a range of camera effects, pause and resume while recording a video
  • Pop Up Play update: Easily resize or pause the Pop Up Play picture-in-picture video window.

Chrome Beta For Android Receives Its First Update, Brings Several Bug Fixes

Well, that was fast – the beta channel of Chrome for Android just became a thing four days ago, and the browser has already received its first update. Granted, it's just a bunch of bug fixes, but it's still something.

This bumps the browser up to v25.0.1364.33 and fixes the following issues:

  • 164632 - Edit Bookmark is broken
  • 167351 - Youtube video controls are lost after returning from fullscreen
  • 167016 - Some Samsung Galaxy S2 freezes
  • 168062 - Double tapping on non-zoomable sites scrolls the page to the top briefly before returning to original position
  • 167379 - Sometimes tabswitcher is frozen
  • 166998 - Tab content stretched out while returning to it through side swipe gesture
  • 168632 - Crash - Stack Signature: TabAndroidImpl::FromWebContents
  • 168388 - Sync signed in info text's font size is too small
  • 168430 - Bookmark star icon doesn't turn grey/white immediately after bookmarking URL /deleting URL from bookmarks

Of course, it's still beta, and that can only mean one thing: there area still plenty more bugs to squash.
