In this line of work, I get the chance to write about things that are new and exciting. Other times, however, that's just not the case. There are times when writing about certain subjects just makes me sad... and this is one of those times. Sure, it may be good news in a sense, but the fact that I am sitting here, on May 31, 2011, reporting an update to Android 2.1...

Remember DroidDream - one of the worst malware apps that we've seen since Android's inception? Well, it appears that the developer of said malware is back at it again, with a  reported 25 infected apps (so far) found in the Android Market. Dubbed DroidDreamLight by the Lookout Security team, this infection is a stripped down version of its predecessor. Make no mistake, though - that doesn't mean it's any less malicious.

Android has really grown quickly in the realm of mobile gaming, especially with the influx of Tegra 2 phones and tablets. Keeping that momentum going, Madfinger (creator of Samurai 2) is currently working a new game optimized for Tegra devices called SHADOWGUN. There will be two version of this game - one for Tegra 2 devices, and one that takes advantage of NVIDIA's next-gen Tegra 3 processor, the quad-core Kal-El.

Update: Now with video (thanks, Nick!).

It seems that a lot of Android tablet news is coming out of Computex already - we've already seen the Padfone and Eee Pad MeMO 3D from ASUS, the ViewPad 7x and 10Pro from ViewSonic, and now, the WIndPad 100A from MSI.

The 10.1 inch WindPad 100A sports a 1280x800 IPS display with an unnamed ARM Cortex A9 dual-core processer under the hood, but we're guessing it's most likely the Tegra 2.

If you've been looking for a 7 inch tablet without the bells and whistles of the HTC Flyer or the newly announced ASUS Eee Pad MeMO 3D, then it looks like ViewSonic may have your number, as it has just announced its newest Honeycomb tablet: the 7-inch ViewPad 7x.

The ViewPad 7x is pretty cut-and-dry as far as Android tablets are concerned - just in a smaller package.

While Google released the Honeycomb update that brings resizable widgets, USB host support, and overall performance improvements to VZW XOOM owners during I/O, and Motorola dropped it on Wi-Fi only XOOMs late last week, all other Honeycomb tablet owners have been asking the same question: when do I get it?

For owners of the Acer Iconia A500 and the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer that question has been answered by This Is My Next, and you'll be glad to know that you could see your update in as little as two weeks, as the update is scheduled for early June for both tablets.

We first got a peep at the ASUS Eee Pad MeMO at CES earlier this year, but now it has become official... with a bit of a twist. Outwardly, it looks basically the same - until you throw it into landscape mode, that is. This activates a glasses-free 3D view for multimedia, movies, etc. Turn it back to portrait, and you've got a full-on productivity machine.

The 7 inch MeMO 3D not only includes a 1280x800 3D IPS capacitive touchscreen, but it's accompanied by a stylus (much like the HTC Flyer), for natural text input.

When it comes to podcasting applications on Android, there are certain ones that stand above the rest. Among those, BeyondPod Podcast Manager may be the top dog, and for this weekend only, you can score this awesome app for just $1.99 as opposed to the usual $6.99.

Note from Artem: I've been a fan of BeyondPod for over a year now and use it for managing, syncing, and listening to my podcasts exclusively.

Remember the special edition Galaxy Tab 10.1 that was given to all Google I/O attendees this year? It looks like the celebrations of owning a limited edition device have come to a screeching halt, as some owners are experiencing a very specific hardware issue with the device - the front glass is starting to become detached. Earlier today Android Community posted about one particular incident, with hopes that it was a fluke - but in all actuality, it was just the tip of the iceberg.

UPDATE: According to Droid Life, the update should start tonight, but it may just be a "soak test", for users that signed up via Motorola's support forums. That's not entirely confirmed at this point, so if you happen to get the update, drop us a line.

A couple of notes from Motorola about the update:

  • The update will be pushed late tonight. If you go to bed, it should be waiting for you in the morning.
