It's no secret that we love developers here at AP -- they are what fuels the Android ecosystem, after all. To show our appreciation for the elite group that get to call themselves 'devs', we've already successfully sent five on their way to various conferences to help further their skills and networking. At the beginning of the month, we gave away two three tickets to the Android Open Conference in San Francisco, and, more recently, we sent a couple of lucky devs to AnDevCon II, also in SF.

ASUS started pushing an update to the Eee Pad Transformer this morning that brings some minor bug fixes, app updates, improved translations, a new feature called "Supernote," and, most notably, Android 3.2.1 to the tablet/laptop hybrid device.

Among the bug fixes and improvements, you should notice a better experience while using the stock browser with Flash content and fewer force closes, as well as better Wi-Fi stability.

The update is rolling out now, you can see if it's available on your device by heading into the Settings > About tablet > Software update menu.

While the entire tech world is abuzz with news of the just-announced Kindle Fire, MetroPCS unveiled the latest smartphone to land on its 4G LTE network: the LG Esteem 4G.

The Esteem is sporting some nice mid-range specs, and looks to be the clear winner if you're considering MetroPCS as your carrier-of-choice:

  • 4.3-inch 480x800 display
  • 1GHz Snapdragon processor
  • 5MP rear shooter, 1.3MP ffc
  • 4G LTE connectivity
  • Android 2.3

While it's not the most powerful device on the planet, the pricepoint of this device almost makes up for it: $250.

It has been a long time coming, and even though we already knew basically everything about the device, Amazon just officially unveiled its very own Android tablet: the Kindle Fire.

The Fire is a 7-inch tablet/e-reader with an IPS display running at 1024x600, powered by a 1GHz dual-core TI OMAP4 processor and a heavily modified version of Android. Of course, it will be lacking any and all Google Apps, including the official Android Market.

Update: If you've been itching to try this workaround on a non-T-Mobile phone, then now's your chance. The Snozzy dev has added experimental support for AT&T and Sprint, and untested support for Verizon, Virgin, Cricket, Straight Talk, US Cellular, and Viaero. Since the latter group is completely untested, there's a good chance that it will be extremely buggy, if it even works at all. If you decide to give it a go, make sure to drop us a line and let us know how it turns out!

Samsung officially announced the Galaxy Tab 8.9 yesterday, and today, the kernel source has been released. Considering we already know what the Tegra 2 is capable of and how much it can be overclocked while remaining completely stable, I expect to see 1.4GHz kernels pop up before the device is even released.

The source is out for both the Wi-Fi and LTE variants, so if you're into tinkerin', hit the respective links below to download.

If you've dreamed of being a renegade cop ready and willing to bend all the rules in order to put a stop to street crime, then Gameloft's newest title 9mm is the game for you.

You play the part of aptly named John "Loose" Kannon as the head of a special taskforce of like-minded cops set on ridding the town of crime, regardless of what measures need to be taken. You end up on the wrong side of the law after killing a drug lord's brother and stealing millions of dollars, becoming the target of every gangbanger in the city.

It's no secret that we're big fans of tower defense games here at AP -- from Plants vs. Zombies to Fieldrunners HD, we're all about adding a new twist to a fun classic. Magic Defenders HD looks to do just that, with its deep storyline, amazing graphics, and downright awesome gameplay. Don't take my word for it, though, check this out:

Instead of setting up tons of cannons, railguns, or lasers to stop intruders from breaching your walls, you play the part of a lone sorcerer, capable of casting spells to destroy hoards of plundering orcs en masse.
