Head Android honcho Andy Rubin made a cameo earlier today at Intel's Developer Forum to announce something we've all know was coming for a while now: Android support for Intel chips -- namely, the low-powered Atom processor.

Beginning next year, all versions of Android will come ready to run on Intel silicon from the core of the system up, and to show the progress that has already been made on that front, an Android-powered tablet and phone running on an Intel Medifield chip was displayed.

Each month, Research2Guidance puts out a report on Android Market paid apps, which includes how they stack up against each other. The current state of the Market is somewhat of a surprise, as weather and business apps hold the top two grossing spots, with productivity, media & video, and books & reference rounding out the top five. However, one of the most downloaded categories on the Market - games - doesn't show up on the list until number seven, suggesting users would rather download a free game, rather than pay for one.

R2D2-Droid-Phone

Well, what do you know? Looks like Moto hasn't forgotten about the R2-D2 variant of the Droid 2 after all. We've seen the Gingerbread update come and go for the Droid 2 and Droid 2 Global, and now it's time for our little robot themed friend to join the party.

The update brings all of the same features and enhancements of the original Droid 2, and should be hitting devices starting today.

While the Amazon Appstore may have its downfalls, it also has its upsides -- namely good deals and free apps. Thus is the case with its new promotion called "Geek Week," in which some very useful apps designed for hardcore Android enthusiasts have received a nice price drop.

As for the apps in question, you'll find some well-known tools and utilities in the mix:

  • Easy Tether for $4.99 (normally $9.99)
  • Root Explorer for $0.99 (normally $3.99)
  • WidgetLocker for $0.99 (normally $1.99)
  • Wave Launcher for $0.99 (normally $1.99)
  • SetCPU for $0.99 (normally $2)
  • RepliGo Reader for $1.99 (normally $4.99)
  • Xtralogic Remote Desktop Client for $12.99 (normally $24.95)
  • BackupEverything for $0.99 (normally $1.99)

Among those, I highly recommend Root Explorer and SetCPU (for overclocked devices), but the majority of those apps are definitely worth the sale price.

I have absolutely no problem admitting that I'm not a football fan. What I do have a problem with, however, is when an amazing app like DirecTV's NFL Sunday Ticket for Tablets hit the Market and I have no use for it. For the football fans among us, though, this is pure gold.

NFL Sunday Ticket for Tablets lets you monitor every Sunday game all in one place, as well as stream whichever one you like in a smaller window, making dreams come true for the football-multitasking-maniac (like my Dad, for example).

Samsung-Galaxy-S2

It's as if Samsung is looking straight into the heart of America with its newest ad for the Galaxy S II, entitled "The Way We're Wired." The ad hits the soft spot in all of us with its chill-inducing analogies of how we all want to be the best, highlighting philanthropists like Martin Luther King, Jr. and superheros like Batman. Have a look:

Kudos, Sammy. I love it.

Motorola Photon GHLks

US Cellular just sent out a presser for the upcoming Motorola Electrify, which is basically a rebranded Photon 4G minus WiMax. There's little doubt that this will be US Cellular's flagship device, as it's far-and-above their current highest-spec'd device:

  • 4.3-inch qHD display
  • 1GHz dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 16GB internal storage
  • 8MP rear camera, VGA front camera
  • Webtop capable
  • Kickstand
  • Android 2.3

The Electrify will be available sometime later this month for $199 with a two-year agreement.

grid10-features2

The upcoming Fusion Garage Grid 10 tablet is a different sort of beast, looking to separate itself from the current crop of Honeycomb tablets by bringing high-end specs with a low-end pricetag. How high-end, you ask? Let's have a look.

  • 10.1-inch 1366x768 display
  • 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor
  • 512MB RAM (a little on the low side, I agree)
  • 16GB storage
  • microSD slot
  • Wi-Fi and 3G variants
  • Custom "Grid OS" based on Android

Aside from the resolution (which is higher than any other Honeycomb tablet currently out), the Grid 10 features specs that are equivalent to most other Android tablets on the market.

Everyone's favorite stock AOSP ROM, CyanogenMod, has officially made its way to the HTC Evo 3D and Sensation. This is the first build to show up for either device, but according to the respective XDA threads, is stable enough for everyday use.

It's also worth noting that you won't be able to flash this if you used HTC's unlock tool, as it doesn't provide S-OFF, so flashing a custom kernel (which is required with CM) is out of the question.

We were all left with a bad taste in our mouths after hearing AT&T's pricing for the recently announced HTC Jetstream, but if you're looking for a  solid Honeycomb tablet with always-connected mobile access then check out Ma Bell's latest offering: the Acer Iconia Tab A501.

Under the hood, it's the exact same device as the A500, with the inclusion of an HSPA+ radio. The nuts and bolts of it are:

  • 10.1-inch 1280x800 display
  • 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 5MP and 2MP cameras
  • SD card, microUSB, and microHDMI ports
  • Android 3.2

The real sweet spot for this tablet, though, is the pricing.
