Update: As if we didn't all see it coming (you should see all of the @mentions we received on Twitter regarding VZWsupport's history of ignorance when this post when live), Verizon Support just tweeted that they were actually referring to the Galaxy Tab 10.1, not the Galaxy S II. One of these days, Verizon should probably consider hiring support people that actually know something about the products in which they support, instead of a group of neophytes that know as much about technology as my eighty-six year old grandmother (read: nothing).

[Thanks, @packruler!]

Here's some news that a lot of you have been waiting to hear: the Verizon branded Samsung Galaxy S II will have 4G LTE -- if the @VZWsupport Twitter account is to be believed, that is.

Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-10.1-Android-3.1-Honeyomb

An email just hit our inboxes directly from Samsung, inviting us all to join together in NYC on August 3rd for the official unveiling of a "major software update" for the Galaxy Tab 10.1.

image001

We have known that this update was coming for the past several weeks, but now we can finally lock something a bit more concrete down. According to the above image, onsite Tab 10.1 updates will be open to the public at the event, so I wouldn't be surprised if we started seeing a national rollout begin that very same day.

For those who are unaware, TouchWiz UX will bring a lot of useful features to the device, including a mini-app tray for quick access to frequently used applications and an infinitely useful notification area power widget.

Last Updated: August 27th, 2011

We finally have a bit more info about the mysterious HTC Vigor - a device that we previously only knew about thanks to a leaked image taken by its 6MP camera. Now, though, this device is coming into the light a bit more, thanks to A NenaMark benchmark ran by an "anonymous" submitter. We now have a better idea of what this handset may be packing under the hood, and it sounds quite pleasing:

  • 1280x720 display (!)
  • Qualcomm Adreno GPU
  • 1.5GHz processor (it's not clear whether it's dual-core or not, but we're hoping that it is)
  • Android 2.3.4
  • It appears to be running on Verizon's network

While this handset may sound pretty great, make a mental note that these types of benchmarks are fairly easy to spoof, so take it all with a grain of salt until we get more proof it its reality.

LG-G2X-specifications-and-release-date

One of the hottest phones on T-Mobile, the G2x, has just become subject to one of the best deals that I've ever seen. For the next three days you can score this dual-core beast for absolutely free (after $50 mail-in-rebate) with a two-year agreement directly from T-Mo.

2011-07-26 22h32_21

Specs:

  • 4 inch 480x800 LCD display
  • 1GHz dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor
  • 8MP rear shooter, 1.3MP front camera
  • 8GB built-in storage
  • Android 2.3.3

If you've been holding out for the opportune moment to upgrade your phone, you better grab this deal while you can - because it doesn't get much more opportune than this.

The-Google-Samsung-Nexus-S-4G

What if I told you that you could cut loose from your current carrier, hop over to Sprint, and snag a Nexus S 4G for free in the process? Would you be down? If so you answered 'yes' to that, then here's your chance, because both Amazon Wireless and Best Buy online are giving this phone away as long as you put your signature on the dotted line saying that you'll be loyal to Sprint for the next two years.

This phone really needs no introduction, but here are the specs anyway:

  • 4 inch 480x800 SAMOLED display
  • 1GHz Hummingbird processor
  • 512MB RAM
  • 5MP rear shooter, VGA can 'round front
  • 16GB on-board storage
  • Pure stock Android 2.3.x
  • NFC

Of course, if you would rather just walk into your local Best Buy, go ahead.

Popular home entertainment equipment manufacturer Onkyo is set to release its own Android app next month that will allow owners of any 2011 model network A/V receiver to wirelessly control them directly from their Android-powered smartphone. Using a wireless network as its means of connection, the app will also allow users to stream media stored locally on their Android phone, control the volume, select an input source, and more.

The benefits of Android 2.3.5 will soon land in everyone's favorite custom ROM:  CyanogenMod. It's probably safe to assume that it could land in CM7 nightlies as early as tonight or tomorrow, but that's just an educated guess. If you're a nightly user, take a look at your version after you flash the next update, you may just have the most recent version of Android at your fingertips.

Definition: A "nightly" is a bleeding edge release that is built on a daily basis, usually at night after a full day's worth of new code has been committed.

It could oftentimes be unstable and not properly tested, lacking any changelogs, but eventually evolving into alphas, betas, release candidates, and finally stable releases.

When I got my Galaxy Tab 10.1, one of the first apps I installed was Dolphin HD, and while it worked great, it still had that "phone" feel to it. Thankfully, the Dolphin Team has been hard at work prepping a version designed specifically for Android tablets (although, they're saying it's for "pads").

Since this is a beta version, it's clear that it's based off of Dolphin HD, as some of the menus still retain the phone vibe. However, the main features are definitely tablet optimized: the address and tab bar are both larger, and the settings menu takes full advantage of fragments.

Motorola_XOOM

In the slowly unraveling drama that is the XOOM 4G LTE upgrade, another chapter has been put in place. Rumor has it that VZW XOOM owners may receive an email today letting them know the the upgrade will happen in September -- but we have no confirmation as of yet.

Update: Here is the email we received confirming that the update should indeed start in September:

image

The original word on the street was that the upgrade should have happened only three months after launch, a deadline severely missed by Motorola/Verizon. If the September date is correct, the VZW XOOM will have been out for seven months when it finally gets its 4G LTE chip.  To add insult to injury, the 4G LTE equipped Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is set to hit Big Red's shelves on July 28th.
