Just two short days after Sammy released the kernel source code for the Wi-Fi Galaxy Tab 10.1, developer pershoot released the first overclocked kernel for the device, clocking a smoking 1.4GHz. The VZW variant of the Tab 10.1 will now be able to receive the same treatment, as the kernel source just hit Sammy's Open Source Release Center.

If you're the tinkerin'-type, you can grab the download from here -- otherwise, just hang out and let XDA work its magic!

Today, Motorola announced its newest handset geared towards corporate types: the Pro+. This is yet another offering to fill the Blackberry-style void in the Android world, as it not only offers the same familiar form factor, but advanced security features akin to that of RIM's handsets -- like remote wipe, full data encryption, and password expiration.

The Pro+ packs a 1GHz processor, 512 MB RAM, and Android 2.3 under its 3.1-inch 480x640 Gorilla Glass display and full QWERTY keyboard, along with a 5MP rear shooter and 1600mAh battery.

The Pro+ will be available in Asia and Europe beginning in October, with no word on price or US availability at this time.

If you were to throw ROM Manager, MetaMorph, Titanium Backup, and SetCPU into a blender with a dash of steroids, then the result would most definitely be ROM Toolbox from JRummy. Clearly this is a root only app, and it is probably the most beastly one that I've ever laid eyes on. All of the features encompassed by ROM Toolkit will blow your mind, just take a look at the feature list, taken directly from the Market listing:

ROM Settings:

  • Access the ROM Manager with hundreds of zips to download & install
  • Install ROM from SD card
  • Check for ROM updates/patches
  • Backup/restore nandroid
  • Wipe data/cache/dalvik/battery stats

Theme Settings:

  • Change your battery icon (Beta)
  • Restart status-bar
  • Change system fonts for your entire device
  • Set your boot logo (for supported phones)
  • Manage Theme Chooser themes (CM7 themes)

Application Management:

  • Remove, Freeze, unfreeze, launch, backup, wipe data/cache for any System or Data app
  • Backup and restore your apps
  • Set app install location (apps-to-SD)
  • Batch install apps to either System or Data

Performance Settings:

  • Set CPU (max/min frequencies & scaling governor)
  • Apply CPU at boot
  • Change sysctl values to improve performance
  • Free system memory

Start-Up Tasks:

  • Zipalign system/data apps on each boot-up
  • Clear cache on each boot-up
  • Fix permissions on each boot-up
  • Run your own custom script each boot-up

Quick Commands:

  • Mount system read/write
  • Reboot, Fast Reboot, Reboot Recovery, Shutdown, Reboot Bootloader
  • Zipalign apks to optimize performance
  • Block ads shown from other apps
  • Remove or enable the boot animation

Build Properties:

  • Change the lcd density (screen resolution)
  • Change the call ring delay to ring faster when dialing out
  • Set the VM Heap size (performance increase)
  • Set any property in any .prop file

Extra Tools:

  • Use your camera led as a torch/light
  • Quickly access: Terrminal Emulator, Hidden settings menu, all System app settings
  • Show ROM info

That is a serious amount of features jammed packed into one app.

htc-sensation

HTC has been steadily making good on its promise to unlock the bootloader of its more recent models -- first came the EU Sensation, followed by the EVO 3D. Continuing along this same path, today HTC updated the unlock portal on HTCdev.com to include the T-Mobile variant of the Sensation.

2011-08-29 15h30_52

Keep in mind that if you plan on making use of this process that it will likely void your warranty, so tread with caution.

With that said, you can head over to the official HTC Dev site now and officially get your unlock on.

Shortly after the HTC Sensation was released, we covered a seemingly random issue with the touchscreen. Not all Sensation owners experienced this issue, and it's still relatively unknown what the exact cause of the problem is.

However, one of the theories formed on XDA is that it's a grounding issue on some devices. On others, though, the issue seems to be completely software related. If you can easily solve the problem by rebooting or a factory reset, then the fix outlined below will not work for you. If, however, this doesn't remedy the problem - even temporarily - then you should continue reading.

Normally, I feel like live wallpapers are a novelty at best. While they may add functionality or pleasing aesthetics to a device's homescreen, they usually end up sucking down the battery and slowing down the device as a result.

Every once in a while, though, a LWP comes along that makes any potential downsides totally worth it. Thus is the case with a new live wall from Bizai Studio called Swirling Ornaments.

I'm going to be totally honest here -- this may be the best LWP I've ever seen. The colors, smooth transitions, and overall elegance is truly beautiful. Have a look:

The best part is that this wall is completely free.

Last week, Amazon Wireless had a deal going for the HTC EVO 3D where newcomers to the Now Network could score the device for $99. Not to be outdone, Wirefly has fired back with an even better deal: if you sign a new agreement with Sprint, you can get the EVO 3D for $50. Also unlike Amazon Wireless' deal, current Sprint customers will only have to drop $100 with a contract renewal, saving around half of the retail cost.

2011-08-29 12h06_10

Specs:

  • 4.3 Inch qHD Super LCD glasses-less 3D display
  • 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 5MP rear shooter with 3D photo and video capabilities, 2MP front camera
  • 1GB built-in storage
  • Android 2.3 with Sense 3.0

Regardless of whether or not you're into the 3D aspect, this is still a killer device at an insanely good price.

Last week, we took the wraps off a new accessory contest sponsored by Seidio, in which five lucky winners will be the recipients of a case and desktop charger of their choosing.

After reading through all 170+ entries - some funny, some tragic, some that make you feel awful for the story teller, and some that were just downright crazy, we've reached a decision on who the winners are.

So, without further ado, here they are (in no particular order):

The Winners

Ryan Duncan

First up is a tragic story of a love almost lost thanks to a dead battery, but fortunately, it has a happy ending.

Samsung-Galaxy-S2

We've practically been counting down the days until Samsung's Galaxy S II event, which was originally scheduled for Monday, August 29, but now it looks like we'll have to add at least one more day to the count. Thanks to Hurricane Irene, New York City has been declared in a state of emergency and over 250,000 people have been evacuated, thus forcing Sammy to postpone the event at least one day, to Tuesday, August 30th.

Of course, we've been waiting this long... I guess one more day isn't going to hurt anyone.

Yesterday we highlighted a deal with VZW's first LTE phone, the HTC ThunderBolt. If the TBolt isn't your cup of tea, then Amazon Wireless has come through with yet another amazing deal on an LTE phone: the Samsung Droid Charge.

The Charge is still the only Droid branded phone infused with 4G LTE, and now you can get it for basically nothing when you sign up for new service with Big Red.

2011-08-26 14h49_35 2011-08-26 14h49_08
