It seems like only yesterday when the best option for "gaming" on Android was throwing birds at pigs. We've come a long way since then and, thanks to modern hardware, the mobile device is quickly becoming the new console. Helping push that movement right along is a new game from Studio OnMars called Critical Strike Portable.

As you can probably guess from its name, Critical Strike Mobile is basically Counter Strike for your mobile device(s), albeit with a slight change: instead of using the Half-Life engine, Critical Strike is based off the Unity engine.

It seems like we've been waiting forever for an official build of VLC to land in the Play Store, and that day has finally come... for some people, anyway. First off, the build that just landed in the Store is for devices with ARMv7 NEON CPUs only. This includes most modern processors, like Tegra 3, Exynos, OMAP4, and Snapdragon S2, S3, and S4. If you have an older processor, like Tegra 2 or one that uses ARMv6 architecture, then a build for your device should be available "in a few days."

While this version is beta, it still supports all the features that users of VLC's desktop software have come to expect, like playback of nearly any video or audio file, media library, support for multi-track audio and subtitles; as well as some mobile-specific goodies like auto-rotation, aspect ratio adjustments, and gestures to control volume.

wm_GALAXY S III Product Image (8)_B

Sprint customers with the recently-released Samsung Galaxy S III are in store for a small, tiny, itty-bitty little OTA update that started rolling out today. The update brings but one thing:

  • Security Updates

Sure, it's not a huge update in terms of usefulness, but it marks one milestone for the GSIII: its first OTA update. Aww, they grow up so fast.

To pull the update manually, head into Menu > Settings > About phone > System updates > Update Android.

How many times have you thought "you know, this battery widget would be much better if it had some sort of spinning thing around it." or "I would really like to see my remaining battery percentage in the center of a flower."? If you've ever muttered either of the above (or anything similar), the solution to your quandary just landed in the Play Store. It's called Animated Battery Widgets, and if you can't figure out what it is just by reading the name, then I feel sad for you.

And now, the wait is [almost] over.

Google Drive just saw its first update since back in April when it shed the Docs nametag. The update is relatively minor, but still brings some worthwhile enhancements and tweaks:

  • Quickly find files that have been recently opened, edited or shared with you
  • Upload/Download all file types to/from your Google Drive
  • Selecting contacts to share with is easier
  • Faster navigation of folders when syncing in the background
  • Choose text alignment in the documents editor

Frequent users of the Drive app will surely take pleasure in the faster navigation while sync is in progress, as the app could get quite sluggish at times; the ability to upload all file types is definitely a welcome improvement and one more step in Google's quest to take out cloud storage heavyweight Dropbox.

If Tobey Maguire just didn't do it for you as Spider-Man and you'd much rather swing around ridding the world of evil as Eduardo Saverin, then Gameloft's rendition on the new Spider-Man is sure to fit the bill perfectly.

The game is exactly what you expect from a Spidey-game: you fight the bad guys, rid NYC of injustice, blah blah blah. For $7, you'll get over 25 missions in five distinct districts of NYC, free rein across Manhattan, immersive 3D environments, boss battles, and a versatile fighting system with melee, ranged, and combo attacks.

Earlier today, Google announced a slew of new content for the Play Store, including magazines, TV shows, and the ability to purchase movies. New content is great, but there's a problem: the new Play Store isn't yet available on devices other than the Nexus 7 and I/O Galaxy Nexus (post-Jelly Bean update).

As always, though, those crafty devils over at XDA have yanked the newest version of the Play Store from one of the aforementioned devices and made it available to the world.

Earlier today, we looked at some new content added to the Play Store with TV shows, movie purchases, and magazines. Those aren't the only new additions to the Store, either; Google has also added some other useful features, like a revamped "My Apps" page, remote update, and remote uninstall features:

As you can see, the My Apps section now display images of your devices, as well as a way to see which apps are installed on specific devices, which is awesome for anyone with multiple devices.
