[Hands On] N7 Music Player Beta Brings An Interesting Interface And Unique Features To Android, But It Still Needs Some Work

There's no shortage of media players in the Android Market, so creating one that stands out from the rest of the pack can be somewhat of a task. Enter a new music player called N7 Music Player, an app that brings a unique way to browse through your tunes. Have a look:

As you can see, the interface is definitely an interesting take on browsing your music collection. If scrolling through the poly-sized fonts isn't necessarily your thing, a quick pinch of the screen will display all album covers in alphabetical order (by artist). Tapping on the album gives a rather nice flip-out style animation that displays all available tracks from the selected album, again, in alphabetical order.

Blackberry Playbook OS 2.0 Rolling Out Now, Brings Android App Availability With It

The day Playbook owners have been waiting for has finally come - OS 2.0 is out. And with it, the ability to run Android apps.

We first heard that RIM would incorporate Android app support into the Playbook nearly a year ago, so this update has been a long time coming. Of course, Playbook owners won't just be able to update and hop straight into the Android Market - the process is a bit more complicated than that.

Firstly, devs will have to optimize their apps for the Playbook and then submit them to RIM. Once accepted, the apps will then be available to Playbook owners in Blackberry App World.

Not just any smartphone, either - it's your smartphone. Pull it out and drop it in a docking station, though, and it becomes a full workstation powered by Ubuntu, complete with monitor and keyboard.

Barnes & Noble Coughs Up 8GB Nook Tablet To Compete With Kindle Fire, Available Now For $199

Barnes & Noble this morning took the wraps off of a new, 8GB version of the Nook Tablet set to compete dollar-for-dollar with the Kindle Fire. The 8GB Nook Tablet is packing slightly less impressive hardware than its 16GB brother, as B&N cut both the storage and RAM (512MB in this version) in half for this little guy, which puts it on par with Amazon's supercharged e-reader. The Nook Tablet still has one clear advantage, however: a microSD card slot.

The 8GB Tablet is available today for a modest $199, aligning it directly with the price point of the Kindle Fire.

Leaked Screenshots Of Ice Cream Sandwich For The Verizon Droid RAZR Show Up Online, All Other Details Seemingly Absent

A mysterious post showed up on the Droid RAZR forums yesterday containing a whole slew of screenshots of the Droid RAZR running Ice Cream Sandwich. The original poster left no information about the build, nor did s/he reply to the gaggle of questions that followed the leak. Known only as dragon974, the poster seemingly vanished after dropping the goods.

While this leak gives us a good look at what ICS on the Droid RAZR should look like, there have been some questions concerning its validity. According to several of the replying comments in the thread, including one from well-known Android modder P3Droid, these shots are said to be completely authentic.

Sony Google TV Root Exploit Allows For Unsigned Kernels, Modified Flash Plugin, And More

The minds over at GTV Hacker have successfully achieved root on Sony Google TV boxes and TVs running the newest firmware version (Honeycomb 3.2). The exploit also allows for custom kernels to be loaded by hijacking the boot process. These custom kernels can, in turn, bring a number of desirable features to the device.

According to the GTVHacker blog, the following modifications are included in the custom kernel:

  • Modified flash plugin with random per box flash string for Content Provider Bypass.
  • Crippled update feature to prevent box from receiving automatic updates.
  • Completely RW system, cache, and rootfs partitions
  • Full ADB Root
  • Removed signature checks on kernel / init scripts / init binary
  • A few other surprises.

It's not much of a secret that I don't actually like cases for my devices. I appreciate the added protection, but I've found that most cases either hinder the device's overall use, deduct from the natural sleekness, or are just flat-out ugly.

Then I got my hands on the Surface, Active, and Convert cases from Seidio. Wow.

Never before have I actually wanted to use a case on my phone, but these are some of the best looking cases I've ever seen. Not only do they look great, but they feel great and don't negatively affect the way I use my device.

[Rumor] San Francisco Bay Area Lands On Sprint's LTE Rollout List For 2012

Talk of Sprint's upcoming LTE network has been on the rise over the last several weeks, with Dan Hesse himself announcing the first four cities (Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio) to gain the ultra-fast network, and Kansas and Baltimore being added to the list shortly after.

We're now hearing word that the San Francisco Bay Area is likely to gain Sprint LTE before the end of 2012, with construction of the network already underway. The Bay area rollout will cover nearly 900 sites and take approximately six months to complete, putting the estimated launch date for the finished product sometimes in October or November.
