Opera Mobile Coming To Android "Within The Month" For Free Hardware Accelerated Browsing

The Norwegian browser company Opera Software has just notified readers of their blog that it will be bringing the "Mobile" version of its browser to Android sometime this month. Along with some ominous soundbytes such as "proprietary technologies will die", Opera demoed a Galaxy S running Opera Mobile while announcing that Samsung will now start shipping phones with their browser included.

Some of you may be confusedly saying you have Opera on your phone already. There is a difference between Mini and Mobile in that the Mobile browser renders webpages itself, as opposed to the server-side processing done in the Mini browser.

Samsung Releases Galaxy S Froyo Update Source Code

Today, Samsung updated its open-source portal with what seems to be the final Android 2.2 source code for JPM Galaxy S i9000s. This might not mean much right now to those of you running carrier-branded Galaxy S phones (Captivate, Vibrant, Epic 4G, Fascinate), but it is a positive indication of things to come and may mean that the Froyo ROMs for your handsets will be showing up sooner rather than later.

Full Tilt Set To Launch Real-Money Rush Poker App

There are times when it pays to be an Android user, literally. Poker enthusiast website PokerTwitch received word that Full Tilt's Rush Poker will soon be coming to some lucky Froyo-running Android phones. This appears to be the first genuine real-money poker game for Android and trumps the offerings in Apple's strict App store whose policies do not permit gambling for real currency. There are online solutions available but none so convenient as a native application. Rush Poker is a new style of online play from Full Tilt and seems well-suited to the pick-up-and-play style of mobile gaming.

Select Black Card members of Full Tilt's poker site are receiving e-mails inviting them to participate in Rush Poker Mobile's beta launch if their device is one of the following:

Splurge Of Verizon Samsung Galaxy Tab Info Leaks Out - November 1st Release?

Some interesting details about Verizon's Samsung tablet that is set to take on Apple's iPad monolith have recently come to light. Droid-Life's insiders have let them know of a possible November 1st release date for the Verizon version, to coincide with the European release. This differs from the previously rumoured release date of November 14th on Sprint, so, just like with the Galaxy S phones, we may see a staggered release schedule from the big four in America.

Droid-Life also got a chance to sneak a peek at a rough draft of the VZW Tab's user guide and noted several mentions of phone functionality and Google search.

Sony Ericsson LiveView Priced And Dated For Europe, X10s To Get OS Update In November?

The lucky folks over at French tech blog JournalDuGeek got themselves some on-wrist time with Sony Ericsson's OLED Bluetooth watch/remote/alert terminal. If you're not familiar with the device, check out our coverage of its official announcement in September: Sony Ericsson Outs The LiveView Remote For Android Devices...

JDG posted some rather blurry pics of the device, whilst also disclosing a price and rough release date: €59 in November. Considering Sony are known for "aspirational" pricing, this is very pleasing if true. Not much was said about the device itself, and it is unknown as yet how legible the OLED screen is in sunlight.

PayPal Payment May Be Coming To The Android Market

According to news website TheStreet, Google may be finally relenting on the Google Checkout-only system currently employed in the Android Market by letting PayPal in on the action. This is a facility that users have demanded for some time, and the ubiquity and convenience of PayPal payment should be a nice incentive for people to buy apps if they have not done so before. TheStreet also speculates that this new payment option may be the final piece of the puzzle in the long-awaited Google Music project, allowing for seamless payment from your device or PC. An announcement at PayPal's October 26th conference in San Francisco is expected to unveil this new partnership.

Firefox For Android Finally Hits Beta Status, Set To Silence Critics

SmartSMSVibrate Automates Your SMS Notification Settings

Over at the bustling hivemind of xda-developers, poster Carsten4207 has just published his first app to the Market, and it's one with a neat little trick. The app, when enabled, uses the proximity sensor to determine whether your phone is in your pocket/face-down or facing up on a surface. You can then decide whether or not you want your phone to vibrate for incoming SMS messages depending on the situation.

The application does not poll constantly, instead tapping into your SMS state. Additionally, the app is only activated when a message is received, limiting the impact on battery life.

As it's Carsten4207's first app, it's forgivable that the functionality is somewhat limited - the automation does not extend to calls, for example, but if you don't care much for calls and just want something not overly complex, then SmartSMSVibrate may be just the tool for you.

T-Mobile Announces WiFi Calling For Android: Available On The New myTouch, Motorola Defy

We've known it was coming for some time now, but T-Mobile just sent out a press release including details regarding their plans for a WiFi Calling application for their Android phones. The new T-Mobile myTouch will launch later this year with the feature, and the Motorola Defy will be receiving it as well. Additionally, the T-Mobile G2 should be getting it in the coming months, along with the LG Optimus and possibly the Motorola Charm.

The Boy Genius Report sought further details from T-Mobile and got a response explaining the difference between the Android version of WiFi calling and the version used by certain Blackberry phones.

Fennec Dev Discusses Differences, Benefits, And Challenges Of Bringing Firefox To Android

We've seen Fennec (or Firefox for Android as it's now called) gradually progressing over the last few months, reaching a state of real usability in the last couple of weeks. There are many excited by Fennec's journey and the ability have a browser with near-full-desktop functionality, but it seems that even more struggle to see a place for another browser on their phone. After all, the stock Android browser is lightning-quick and works well enough for a pretty satisfying web experience.

Mozilla mobile developer Matt Brubeck recently penned a blog post set to explain the reasoning behind Firefox for Android, and why he believes it is a worthwhile addition to both Android and Mozilla families.
