About Bertel King, Jr.

Bertel is a Linux user who likes budget smartphones more than flagships, uses a custom ROM, and gets his apps from F-Droid. When he isn't writing short stories for Android Police, you might find him penning the fictional kind. Otherwise, look for him reading pixels that were converted to ink and paper.

The newest version of SwiftKey opens the third-party keyboard up to millions upon millions of people. How? By officially bringing Chinese language support out of beta. There are seven new input methods total, with ways to type in Simplified, Taiwan Traditional, and Hong Kong Traditional Chinese.

The Internet has made buying things as effortless as possible. You don't need to go to the store or even roll out of bed. You don't have to bother with cash, and in places where you frequently shop, you can do without pulling out a card either. A series of mouse clicks or finger taps is all it takes.

The Smart Lock feature that has been slowly cooking in the Chrome OS dev and beta channels has made its way into the latest stable release, version 40. Now anyone with a phone running Android 5.0 or later (sorry, no tablets) can automatically unlock their Chromebook just by keeping the two devices within 100 feet of each other.

There are many ways to go after a competitor, and Microsoft isn't storing all of its eggs in one basket. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, the company that challenges Android with Windows Phone is investing in Cyanogen Inc.

There are no shortage of ways to get links from one device to another, but this often involves signing up for a service and leaving behind a record of what you're sharing. CaastMe is a new Android app that has an innovative way of getting around this, account-free.

GalaxyNotePro12-2-Thumb

The Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 is a big tablet. Unsurprisingly, it comes with a hefty price tag to match. Back when it launched early last year, the 32GB Wi-Fi version came at $749.99, and the price has only dropped down to $599.99 on Amazon in the time since. AT&T still sells its 4G LTE-enabled version at 9.99.Let that sink in.Then take a look at eBay, where refurbished AT&T units are currently going for 9.99. These are unlocked, so you're free to shop around when it comes to which carrier you use them on. That's what we in the business like to call a good deal.

HTC One M8 owners in Europe are getting a lollipop-flavored treat. That's right, Android 5.0 is now hitting devices across the pond. We have multiple layers of confirmation on this one. For starters, HTC senior communications manager Jeff Gordon had this to say earlier today:

You could reasonably make the assumption that when Samsung debuted its own media streaming service known intriguingly as Milk Music, it would have released it across its entire catalog of devices. But that's not the way Samsung has decided to pour this beverage. Instead, it's serving things out to a handful of devices at a time.

An external battery pack can provide some peace of mind, but what happens if the power's out long enough to drain it down? Or what if everyone requires more juice on the next camping trip than you plan for? What charges the chargers?

I'm not much of a runner, but I've occasionally made use of the Runtastic Running and Fitness app to keep track of my time and distance while jogging around the neighborhood. Given that it's the middle of winter in the US, I won't be firing up the app anytime soon. But the more dedicated among you may be happy to know that the latest update (version 5.4) has made the few visual adjustments needed to better fit in on Lollipop devices.

Evan Blass, better known around these parts as the well-regarded leaker @evleaks, has taken to Twitter (despite being retired) with a leaked thumbnail of what may be renders of the upcoming HTC One M9. We've seen purported images of HTC's next flagship surface already, but word on the street says these were dummy shells the manufacturer produced while developing the device (here's what Blass himself has to say on the matter). This leaves room for these latest leaks to still be the real deal.

ZTE has announced the Blade S6, a mid-range handset boasting a 5-inch screen and a physical design that, while hardly original, still looks slick. The 4G LTE-enabled device should handle lightweight use just fine thanks to its Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor and Adreno 405 GPU. With Android 5.0, 2GB of RAM, and a 13MP rear-facing camera (5MP on the front), it's packing enough to hopefully keep buyers happy, especially considering its $249.99 price tag.

When it comes to storing files on your mobile device, having a 128GB microSD card is the Holy Grail. It's the easiest way to store all the things without having to worry about staying in range of Wi-Fi or burning through limited data allotments. So it's with that in mind that I direct your eyes over to TigerDirect.com. The site is currently offering a 128 microSD card for 79.99, down from $129.99 after instant savings. Shipping is free.

With its latest feature, Feedly is going after Google. The company has introduced Power Search, an improvement to its searching mechanism that's reserved for pro accounts. It lets you search for content around the web that isn't saved in your feed without having to fire up a separate tab.

Lyft users have grown accustomed to seeing a pink balloon in their app drawers, but this year, that changes. The ride-sharing service has decided to kick off 2015 with a new look.

The Pushbullet team has long impressed us with the creation of a solid product that works as advertised across multiple platforms, pushing files and syncing notifications with ease. Now you can add more names to the list: Mac OS X and the Safari web browser, which join the existing iOS app to flesh out Pushbullet's support for Apple's ecosystem.

Update: To the developer's surprise, Google has returned D-GLES to the Play Store. People who bought it in the past no longer need to send emails requesting updates, and those who have purchased the Amazon version will continue to get new releases going forward. The latest one adds support for Amazon Fire TV and the Fire TV Stick.

The G3 may be LG's favorite child at the moment, but the G2 remains a compelling piece of hardware. Anyone in the market for one would do well to take a glance over at eBay, where unlocked AT&T models with 32GB of storage are going for 9.99 with free shipping, and the only people who have to pay taxes are those living in California. These are new units discounted to a lower price than refurbished ones went for back in August.

A week has passed since the Humble Mobile Bundle 10 made its presence known, and if you've been snatching up these pay-what-you-want deals for a while now, then you know what this means. That's right, more games. In addition to the six previously revealed titles, we also see the likes of iPollute, Sorcery, and The Tiny Bang Story.

In 2014, the US was shocked to see a flock of sea hawks fly in from the northwest and, despite normally preying on fish, completely devour a team of broncos from the Rockies. This year the birds are still on the offensive, but a group of patriots from New England have banded together to stop them. On Sunday, we will get to see the two sides do battle in a giant bowl.
