Bertel King, Jr.
Born and raised in the rural South, Bertel knows what it's like to live without 4G LTE - or 3G, for that matter. The only things he likes sweeter than his tea are his gadgets, and while few objects burn more than a metal phone on a summer day, he prefers them that way anyway.

CheapCast

CheapCast has disappeared from the Play Store, taking with it a convenient way to turn any old Android device into a makeshift Chromecast. To make matters worse, there's a good chance the app will never return.

Since CheapCast's release, Google has added several cryptographic checks to make sure the Chromecast ecosystem only works with approved devices such as Google's $35 dongle, Google TVs, and the like. The feature now checks for a Google signed certificate, which comes preloaded on such products.

2014GalaxyNote10.1-Thumb

Right before the weekend, Verizon started pushing out the long-awaited KitKat update to the Galaxy S4. Whether or not the masses noticed is one thing, but Android enthusiats all over the country quietly squealed to themselves as they pounced on the update icon that appeared in their notification bars. Now the carrier is rolling out an update for the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition as well, software version KOT49H.P605VVRUCNC2.

Streambels-Thumb

Streambels really doesn't care which way you want to get media off your Android device and onto something with speakers or a screen that will better do it justice. Before now it has handled DLNA and AirPlay just fine. After the latest update, the little piece of software knows what to do with Chromecast as well.

Streambels

Streambels already competed, in part, with the likes of BubbleUPnP. Now it competes with AllCast and other Chromecast-centric apps as well.

GalaxyNoteII-Thumb

KitKat has started to come to the international variant of the Galaxy Note II. As SamMobile has reported, the update is currently available to users in France. It's an official build available through Kies, with no word yet on when an OTA is scheduled to go out. When it does, it should hit other regions as well. The update bumps the software version up to N7100XXUFND3.

When it comes to soccer games for Android, there is no shortage of options. There's soccer for FIFA fans, soccer for strategic types who'd rather not get their shoes dirty, real soccer, and (of course) soccer for zombies. Now we have a game for people who want to play from the air-conditioned comfort of their rally cars, Soccer Rally 2.

Soccer Rally 2 combines soccer with top-down racing, only there's little racing to be found here.

HTCM8-Thumb

Leading up to announcement day, HTC One M8 leaks typically showed off the Gunmetal Gray version of the device. This version has also held much of the spotlight since. But this darker, streaked variant isn't inherently an improvement (these things are subjective, after all), and there are many people who would probably prefer the shiny, silver look of the original. Well, said version of the HTC One M8 is now available from AT&T.

Duolingo-Thumb

Duolingo is one of the most simplistic, visually appealing language learning experience someone can come across, and the fact that it's a mobile app they can take anywhere is just one heck of a perk. Today's update doesn't shake things up for existing users, but it has what it takes to bring in many more. Now English courses are available for people who speak Hindi as their native language, Russian speakers have the option to learn German, and German speakers are welcome to learn French.

Redbox-Thumb

With all of the video streaming options out there these days, it wouldn't surprise us in the slightest if Redbox isn't the first app that comes to mind when the movie-watching mood strikes. But a new app update has rolled out that freshens things up a bit for anyone who just really likes the feel of a physical disc. Now there's a wish list in the sidebar for the media that is best saved for later.

Hulu-Thumb

The Hulu Plus app is perfectly capable of pumping out videos on its own to a small screen. With a Chromecast plugged into your TV, it's even able to cast content out to the big screen as well. Now the app is gaining a feature that will give it even more control over your viewing experience. Starting with the latest update, Hulu Plus is capable of becoming a remote control for Hulu content streaming from the Xbox One, PlayStation 3, or PlayStation 4.

IFTTT-Thumb

IFTTT is the kind of black magic that web mages use to bend the Internet to their will. The best part is that the command that gets it to work is pretty simple. There's no abra cadabra or expelliarmus to memorize here. Just head to the website and fill in the blanks within the statement if ___ then ___ with triggers and actions (known as channels) of your choice. Now this special craft isn't just reserved for desktop use, as an official Android app is due out today that aspiring web wizards can carry around as their well-disguised wand.
