Bertel King, Jr.
Born and raised in the rural South, Bertel knows what it's like to live without 4G LTE - or 3G, for that matter. The only things he likes sweeter than his tea are his gadgets, and while few objects burn more than a metal phone on a summer day, he prefers them that way anyway.

Shazam-Thumb

Shazam, the company whose app uses a phone or tablet's microphone to identify a song or TV show, has partnered with Rdio to offer users full in-app song playback. Previously Shazam kicked users out to a separate app to check out the track. Going forward, people with Rdio subscriptions won't have to deal with such disruptive behavior.

Yes, that's an iPhone screenshot. Android's update is coming soon.

The integration doesn't stop there.

ESPN-Thumb

ESPN's Fantasy Football app isn't new to these parts. It's been up and down the gridiron more than once over the years, and it has no problem handling pigskin. But it did need to sit out a few games while its developers cracked out a much needed redesign. The latest app, which has been knocked from version 3.x back down to 1.0, looks like something better fit to play in the KitKat era.

Commandr-Thumb

Commandr expands on Google Now by giving its users the ability to toggle hardware switches and control music with simple voice commands. There isn't a standardized way for third-party developers to do such a thing, but that hasn't stopped this developer from coming up with a product worth watching. The original release was more cool than practical, but version 2.0 goes a long way towards correcting this.

Previously Commandr required users to say "Note to self" before every action, resulting in the very awkward, "OK Google, Note to self, turn off wifi." Now the middle bit is no longer required.

120Sports-Thumb

There's always a game on somewhere, and keeping up with all of the action doesn't come cheap. Watching the big event often requires a cable subscription, regardless of whether a fan is trying to watch on their television or a mobile device. 120 Sports offers a bit of a respite from this difficult situation by letting people keep up with the latest goings on in the sports world without having to cough up a cent.

2013Nexus7-Thumb

Update 7/14/14: The previous deal sold out, but it's now back under another listing.

Google I/O has come and gone without mention of a new Nexus tablet (which was expected), but this means you still have time to pick up a Nexus 7 for cheap and remain current. Numerous deals have passed already, but this time we've come across one going for a price approaching the 50% off mark.

Calendar-Thumb

Sometimes the name really does say it all. Calendar for Android Wear is a simplistic calendar that people with Android Wear watches can strap to their wrists. It shows the date, keeps track of events, and comes in one of five colors. The app doesn't do much else, but in this case, that's attractive.

The app's usefulness is limited out of the box, as users are restricted to a monthly view and must pay a single in-app purchase of roughly $2 to get access to the daily view with details.

Nova-Thumb

There comes a point many, many months after the release of a new version of Android where devoted users just can't quash the desire to get their hands on an even newer version. A preview of Android L is already available for download, but unless you are willing to flash your device and put up with any number of potential bugs, I wouldn't recommend installing it on a phone you actually need to use.

AdobePhotoshopExpress-Thumb

Adobe has multiple Photoshop apps on the Play Store, and the simplest of the bunch has received an update to version 2.3 bringing in a number of new features. Adobe Photoshop Express now expands on the basic editing options it provides. For starters, the latest release lets users vary the intensity of filters.

Blemish removal is another standard photo editing feature introduced in version 2.3. Using the tool is as simple as poking on the spot you want to remove and tapping it again if the first time didn't do a good enough job.

Nexus7

A 16GB Nexus 7 might leave you tight on space, especially if you plan on playing multiple games on it, but at $129.99 this restriction can be overlooked. The tablet is again available at this remarkable price on eBay Daily Deals, and while it's a refurbished model, beggars can't be choosers when we're talking $100 off.

To make the tablet even more affordable, shipping is free. A replacement is rumored to launch later this year, but until then, this is a good chance to run what is still one of the best Android slates out there without breaking the bank.

DotView-Thumb

Leading up to the launch of the One M8, HTC started posting some of its apps to the Play Store. This arrangement allows it to roll out changes to particular apps without having to issue firmware updates, which is what it has recently done. The HTC Dot View app has gained a number of new features that expand upon the functionality owners of the accessory can tap into.

The update brings in the ability to select your own image to use as the case's wallpaper.
