About Bertel King, Jr.

Bertel is a Linux user who likes budget smartphones more than flagships, uses a custom ROM, and gets his apps from F-Droid. When he isn't writing short stories for Android Police, you might find him penning the fictional kind. Otherwise, look for him reading pixels that were converted to ink and paper.

After such a long wait, the Nexus 7 is finally ready to make its Verizon Wireless debut. For the better part of a year now, Google has offered an affordable tablet with cellular radios tucked away inside that the US's largest carrier refused to activate (granted, there were ways to get around this). But now, the Big Red and the Nexus 7 are cuddling up just in time for Valentine's Day. Starting February 13th, people who own the 7-inch tablet will be able to activate it on Verizon's network.

CloudMagic isn't a new app, but people are constantly on the lookout for an alternative to default Gmail app that, for various reasons, doesn't meet their needs. If you personally need an email client that can support multiple accounts spread across different sites, something with lightning fast search, and something that doesn't make your eyes bleed, CloudMagic may just be the free app you've been looking for.

Knight Rider may have starred David Hasselhoff, but it was his autonomous car that stole the show. This Pontiac Trans Am could talk, had bulletproof glass, and, most distinctively, featured a prominent set of red lights on the front for eyes. Two decades later, we still can't cram most of KITT's functionality into a car, but a new Indiegogo project can help us replicate what matters most, those distinctive LED lights. Rollin' Eyes accent lights, customizable via an Android app, promise users the ability to make their cars flash and flicker with all the personality of a vehicle packing more of a brain.

Let's get this out of the way upfront, LEGO City My City has nothing to do with LEGO City Undercover for the Wii U. Chase McCain is not the protagonist, Frank Honey's antics are nowhere to be found, and there is no open world city to explore. This is a mini-game collection inspired by the LEGO City block set, with players getting to step into the blocky shoes of role models from all over town.

AT&T's prepaid offering Aio Wireless is a nice way to access the carrier's network without having to make an expensive two-year commitment. Now the carrier has announced the availability of two additional Android phones. The Moto G is available for $149.99 (though it doesn't yet appear on the site). It is joined by the ZTE Sonata 4G, which goes for $79.99. The latter, while less impressive, is an Aio exclusive in the US.

Anyone looking to have food delivered to their doorstep has plenty of options these days, and you don't have to fire up Yelp (or dial a phone number, psh) to do so. Foodler is another online delivery service that has made its way over to Android. The app connects you to local restaurants, some of which may not deliver on their own, and might just save you money in the process. With a bright orange, holo-friendly UI, it won't offend your phone or tablet to give this one a shot.

Companies file for new patents all the time with nothing ever coming of it, so Google's application shouldn't be taken as evidence that such a device is coming down the pipeline. Nevertheless, some concepts are just plain cool. Google has designed a computing device with dual e-ink displays that folds as though it were an actual book, according to a patent application that the US Patent and Trademark Office recently published.

OpenTable has taken much of the stress out of making reservations. Just head online, click-click, and boom - you're done. Now the company wants to bring the same convenience to paying your bill. Screw waiting on the waiter to bring you the check. Just whip out your phone, tap to pay, and be on your way.

The Galaxy S4 is nearly a year old now, but that doesn't mean Samsung's done releasing new variations of it. Today the company has officially announced a new "Black Edition" of the flagship that comes with the plastic, faux-stitched back panel that first appeared with the debut of the Note 3.The new S4 model is joined by a variation of the S4 mini that looks the same, just smaller.

Update: The OTA has started rolling out to devices. If you're a Verizon HTC One owner, it's time to check your phone. But be advised - the rollout is staged.

It wasn't that long ago when Google announced that it had entered a cross-licensing deal with Samsung, and just two days ago, it entered one with Cisco as well. Not to be left out, Samsung announced today that it, too, had signed a deal with Cisco. As a part of this deal, both companies will have access to the other's patent portfolios for the next ten years.

NBC is finally taking the time to give its Android apps some tender loving care. The company has finally brought its mainline news app out of the Froyo era, but wisely choosing not to stop there, it has updated its Breaking News app as well.

300: Rise of an Empire - Seize Your Glory confuses what goes in a name and what should be a tagline. Shortening this down to 300: Rise of an Empire, the name of the upcoming film it's based on, would make perfect sense, but no. Instead, we get this.

If we've learned anything from World of Warcraft, it's that strategy games and MMOs go hand in hand. Blizzard's role-playing game has been consuming lives for over a decade now, but it began as an RTS that was arguably every bit as engrossing. Line of Defense is taking a different approach. This MMO has now spawned a tactics game available for Windows, Mac OS X, iOS, and, yes, Android - all on the same day.

Google's new head of YouTube will be Susan Wojcicki, formerly a Senior Vice President of Ads and Commerce. She is replacing Salar Kamangar, who will remain with Google to work on other things. CEO Larry Page made the announcement earlier today in an emailed statement.

Do you use your smartphone while watching TV? Yeah, put your hands down. We're all guilty here. Yahoo hoped to take advantage of this habit of ours with IntoNow, an app that could identify whatever show was on and provide extra information about it (think SoundHound for TV). Yeah, the end result was still distracting, but it could be less disruptive than performing a Google search. Regardless, it doesn't matter anymore. Yahoo has killed the app off.

My N3RD wants to empower you to take control of every gadget in your house, every appliance waiting idly, and every vehicle in your garage using just your smartphone. How, you ask? First, the project needs $50,000. Check. They team has successfully managed to raise over ,000 with 18 days left to go. Next, watch this video.

The LG G Flex is big, slightly curved, and generally overpriced. Now you can add one more thing to that list - it's available from T-Mobile right on schedule. Anyone who wants to own this phone commitment-free for $672 (or for $28 a month over the course of two years) can do so right away, both online and in stores.

Path is one of the few social networks that doesn't encourage users to befriend or follow as many people as they can, instead encouraging users to strengthen relationships with a limited number of others using messages and pictures. Now, add personal videos to that list. With version 3.4, users can now use Path to capture up to 30 seconds of video and share it with their friends.

Sports apps typically aren't the most attractive pieces of software tucked away on Google Play, because let's be honest, why bother? Your average user will just be happy to pull up scores and stats in the palm of their hand, and whether the app adheres to Android's design guidelines occupies about as much thought as that thing they're supposed to be doing instead of watching the game. But if you're as likely to cry foul on a hideous app as you are a bad play, then the latest CBS Sports update may just make you smile.
