Bertel King, Jr.
Born and raised in the rural South, Bertel knows what it's like to live without 4G LTE - or 3G, for that matter. The only things he likes sweeter than his tea are his gadgets, and while few objects burn more than a metal phone on a summer day, he prefers them that way anyway.

When it comes to cable, there's a lot not to like. The monthly bill continues to go up, and no matter how many channels you add, there's still never anything good on to watch. This somehow manages to be the case even while many shows are still exclusively available on cable. Yet as frustrating as the major providers may be, there is one trend that I can readily get behind, and that's the addition of Android apps meant to supplement their traditional service.

Today Minecraft developer Mojang is launching a beta program for the Pocket Edition of its absurdly popular sandbox game. Anyone who purchased Minecraft on an Android device via Google Play is eligible to join. This will give you early access to new, experimental features before anyone else and allow you to provide feedback that could impact future versions of the title.

To enter the beta program, interested players simply need to request to join the Minecraft Pocket Edition Test Group on Google+.

Not to be left behind by the larger carriers, US Cellular is also distributing the Android 4.3 update to the Galaxy S IIIs running on its network. In addition to the goodies that come with the latest version of Jelly Bean, this release gives Samsung's 2012 flagship the ability to pair with Galaxy Gear smartwatches, a privilege that until recently was exclusively provided to the Galaxy Note 3.

Galaxy S III users who do not own a Galaxy Gear may be more interested in the new Samsung KNOX compatibility or the improved pre-installed apps.

An Android 4.3 OTA update has already rolled out to Galaxy S IIIs on T-Mobile and AT&T. Now the update is coming to Sprint devices. This release not only gives Galaxy S IIIs the latest version of Jelly Bean, it introduces the ability to pair the devices with Galaxy Gear smartwatches and brings in Samsung KONX compatibility. Many of those pre-installed apps will also see improvements as well.

This OTA is the first in seven months and jumps the Sprint Galaxy SIII up from Android 4.1.

MotoX-Thumb

It's a good time to own a Moto X. Hell already froze over earlier this week when the Verizon version of the handset was the first to receive an OTA to Android 4.4, beating the Nexus 4 and both Google Play Edition devices. Now the update is rolling out to phones running on T-Mobile.

There is a growing selection of third party cases already available for the Nexus 5, but Google's offerings, tucked away at the bottom of the Play Store page, are poised to be the first ones many people see. There are two types of cases available: the official bumper case and the LG QuickCover. Liam provided a quick look at the former option already, but what about the latter? It's a solid, snug-fitting case that I strongly want to recommend, but at $49, doing so doesn't come easy.

SoundCloud-Thumb

SoundCloud is known for letting users share original audio, and it's a great way to hear a bit of what creative types are out there, well, creating. With millions of users, there's ample reason to keep the Android app from stagnating for too long. So version 2.7 is now rolling out, and it brings a handful of new features that improve the interface and make discovering new content even easier.

There's a different farming sim out there for every type of gamer (except for those that hate farming sims, that is). There are realistic simulators, and then there are some that don't seem to have all that much to do with farming. There's Harvest Moon, FarmVille, and the list goes on. Producing a farming game seems to be a winning strategy regardless of platform, so now Supercell (developer of Clash of Clans) has ported its wildly popular iOS game Hay Day to Android, and it's available for free.

Injustice-Thumb

On the consoles, Injustice: Gods Among Us is a traditional fighting game where DC Comic heroes and villains rip one another to shreds in glorious 2D combat. The Android version isn't quite the same beast. These classic characters still despise each other, but now they're waging war in a 3 on 3 collectible card game.

Though the core gameplay is different, the visuals should still look familiar for anyone who has played the original title.

Many Google apps received a redesign in time for the launch of KitKat, but the Google Translate app was not one of them. Well, its day is fast approaching. The app is now receiving an update that introduces a new look and other tweaks.

What's New?

The camera, microphone, and handwriting input options have been moved to the top, and results appear in a clean list below. This should make getting useful translations that much easier.
