Duolingo-Thumb

Duolingo is one of the most simplistic, visually appealing language learning experience someone can come across, and the fact that it's a mobile app they can take anywhere is just one heck of a perk. Today's update doesn't shake things up for existing users, but it has what it takes to bring in many more. Now English courses are available for people who speak Hindi as their native language, Russian speakers have the option to learn German, and German speakers are welcome to learn French.

IFTTT-Thumb

IFTTT is the kind of black magic that web mages use to bend the Internet to their will. The best part is that the command that gets it to work is pretty simple. There's no abra cadabra or expelliarmus to memorize here. Just head to the website and fill in the blanks within the statement if ___ then ___ with triggers and actions (known as channels) of your choice. Now this special craft isn't just reserved for desktop use, as an official Android app is due out today that aspiring web wizards can carry around as their well-disguised wand.

Facebook just can't keep its hands on its money these days. First the company tossed $1 billion at the folks behind Instagram in order to acquire the service. Then the company agreed to exchange nineteen times that amount for WhatsApp. After that, it dropped another two billion for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. Now it has gone after ProtoGeo, the makers of the Moves activity-tracking app.

Moves1 Moves2 Moves3

ProtoGeo announced the acquisition today in a blog post that's pretty sparse on the details.

Background-Thumb

Taking the background in an image and blurring it is currently the big thing in mobile photography. HTC touted the feature when raving about the M8's duo camera. Google added a similar lens blur effect in the camera app it recently uploaded to the Play Store. Samsung, too, unsurprisingly packed this feature in alongside the plethora of others it crams into the Galaxy S5. Now Sony has uploaded its pre-existing effort to the Play Store, where it can more easily roll out future updates.

MasterCard-Thumb

People are after your credit card information. Okay, this isn't a cable news report, so I'll dial it back a bit. Sometimes bad things happen when credit cards fall into the wrong hands, whether that's from physical theft or large-scale cyber crime. There's been a number of incidents in the news of late, so companies are doing what they can to provide their customers with peace of mind. MagicPlay

The doubleTwist developers have introduced the ability to stream Google Play Music to AirPlay devices using MagicPlay, their own personal means of streaming music from Android to an AppleTV or AirPlay-compatible speakers. The process taps into the same API that Google uses to stream to the Chromecast and that which Sonos uses for Google Play Music to stream to its devices.
