Have you been hearing about all this custom ROM business - Cyanogen, DamageControl, etc and wondering what in the world all those are about?

Or perhaps you already know what those are but are still afraid of trying custom ROMs on your phone because you don't know how to install them or don't want to lose your data and current OS state?

Well, today is your lucky day because in this article from the "I wish somebody showed me how to do this crap when I was getting started" series, I will show you how to

  • back up your current system and exact phone state so that you can

HTC EVO 4G campaign in RadioShack (The Shack)

The HTC EVO 4G is coming in June, and we all can't wait for it to arrive here. That's why any time a bit of new information about the phone surfaces on the web, we sheeply run over to take a look, our tongues out.

This time, AndroidCentral's sister site PreCentral, or rather one of its users - bnceo got some nice scans of the 4 week advertising campaign RadioShack, now The Shack, is planning to run with for the month before EVO 4G is released.

Sprint $100 port credit

Have you been dreaming of picking up an HTC EVO 4G the day it comes out sometime in June (I have) but are currently using another carrier, and maybe even stuck in a contract with them?

Or may you've wanted to switch to Sprint because of their amazing Anymobile Anytime plans that offer unlimited minutes to any carrier's mobile numbers - not just Sprint (yeah, my last bill was 6 anytime minutes)?

no multitouch on xperia x10 mini

You know the drama with the XPERIA X10 multitouch support? The one where it was supposedly possible, then not, then possible again, then refuted for good?

X10 Mini/Mini Pro Multitouch

Well, the recently announced little brothers of the X10 - the Mini and the Mini Pro, will not be getting multitouch either, as confirmed by the official Sony Ericsson blog.

Single handed operation seems to be the theme throughout their whole post, insisting that even though the users clearly want multitouch, the devices are better without it (who are the users to dictate what's better, eh?):

I noted some of your comments asking for the multi touch support.

Google I/O conference

Google I/O

Every year Google holds a conference for developers, called Google I/O, and every year most of you - pretty much all of you but the lucky 4000 people, cannot make it for one reason or another (like the price which is $350-400 USD).

Well, this year, Google announced that it is putting up the keynote speeches, which usually contain the most interesting of the announcements, online at http://www.youtube.com/GoogleDevelopers, and they're going to do it live.

The HTC Hero Android 2.1 update (which we previewed in full here) drama can now probably get its own reality show - every week we get a leak or a "source" that promises the update "for sure this time" and then the week goes by - and nothing happens.

The recent May 7th rumor was getting so old and repetitive, we didn't even consider it report-worthy, and now a Sprint community employee has indicated it indeed had no merit.

Goggles Translate (OCR)

Fresh off the press, Google just announced that the latest update to its Google Goggles for Android (1.6+) introduces a Translate feature.

The app currently supports the following input languages:

  • English
  • French
  • Italian
  • German
  • Spanish

and can translate them to a much bigger set of languages which I just jotted down (from the app itself):

  • Afrikaans
  • Albanian
  • Catalan
  • Danish
  • Dutch
  • English
  • Finnish
  • French
  • Galician
  • German
  • Icelandic
  • Irish
  • Italian
  • Norwegian
  • Portuguese
  • Spanish
  • Swedish

Google promised support for more Latin based languages soon, with non-Latin based languages coming after.

Motorola Milestone UK Android 2.1 update
Last Updated: May 7th, 2010

About 40 minutes ago, Motorola posted a message to its Motorola Europe Facebook group announcing the launch of the Android 2.1 update in the UK for the Motorola Milestone (known as the Droid to the US users).

The update is not OTA is now available both OTA (over the air) and by executing a .exe file which seems to require a Windows computer and a MicroUSB Data cable (non-Windows users are out of luck?).

Oprah EVO 4G video

Probably the most awaited phone of 2010 - the super sexy HTC EVO 4G (formerly HTC Supersonic) made an appearance today on a none other than an Oprah Winfrey show.

Sprint let her play with the device and we got to catch a quick glimpse of it, thanks to fanboydestroyer from Hawtwired.com (this is the proper credit which was apparently mishandled by some other site owners) who recorded this video from his TV:

The curves, the looks - June can't come fast enough.

Adobe Flash and Air on a prototype Android tablet

The Web 2.0 Expo happening in San Francisco has us quite excited, as Zedomax.com, a blog revolving around technology and gadgets, has found an Android tablet prototype smoothly running Flash and Air.

As you may remember, Adobe had a bit of a falling out with Apple last month, and vowed to instead gun for Android at full speed. With that announcement, we found out that the private Air/Flash beta has been a huge success with developers, with some porting their apps from Flash/Air to Android in a matter of hours.
