PSA: Reddit.com Mobile Site Revamped - Looks Great On Android

Yesterday, Reddit (one of my most favorite community news sites on the web) launched an updated and completely revamped mobile site, supporting most of the functionality of the main website.

I checked it out in the Dolphin HD browser on my EVO 4G and found very pleasant to use. Here are some features that I saw present and a few comments:

  • there are larger, mobile friendly upvote/downvote buttons
  • messages, including compose, reply, and context functionality
  • viewing of your own profile and links related to each comment/submission (reply, collapse, permalink, parent, edit)
  • submission is there
  • search too
  • lots of space saved via context menus provided by little boxes with 2 down arrows
  • the view should autoscroll when you reach the bottom, though it currently doesn't work for me on Dolphin HD
  • full commenting works, including the little useful "help" link

You can access the mobile site via this shortcut: http://i.reddit.com or by appending .compact to any reddit url.

First Successful Root Achieved On The HTC Incredible By The Unrevoked Team

It looks like the Unrevoked team, the same one that brought you the one-click EVO root, has been playing around with some race conditions apparently present during the Incredibles' boot process, which allowed them to slowly and painfully root a couple of their phones.

The process is currently very manual and requires a lot of patience and careful timing but the Unrevoked team is not giving up, hoping to come up with a reliable method as soon as possible (they've been at it all day today).

Nexus One Gets 720p HD Video Recording In A Patch To CyanogenMod

Nexus One is still alive and pretty much kicking, especially thanks to the community. Since Google won't push new features to it, the community has to.

First Cyanogen added support for 802.11n WiFi in CyanogenMod, and now about half an hour ago, an xda-developers forum member by the name of charnsingh_online announced that he made a patch for CyanogenMod which enabled 720p video recording in the Nexus One.

Dell Streak Rooted - Instructions Are Now Live

Paul O'Brien is an Android hacker with mad skills. He's the man behind many roots, such as the Legend and the Desire, and now he has also rooted the new Dell Streak.

Rooting instructions, using a technique Paul called Superboot, have just been posted to the MoDaCo forum. Recovery images are to follow soon. I will mirror them here (current version 07/Jun r1) but you should always double check with the post to see if they were updated:

Rooted EVO 4G Users Can Now Enjoy Unlimited Free WiFi/Bluetooth Tether (Hotspot) As Android-wifi-tether App Adds Support For EVO
Last Updated: June 12th, 2010

EVO 4G users, rejoice! As of a few minutes ago, you can enjoy unlimited free WiFi/Bluetooth tethering using the Wireless Tether for Root users (or simply android-wifi-tether) app.

The app's main committer Harald Mue, who doesn't even have the EVO in his possession, together with a community contributor Andrew Robinson (who does have one) have figured out what was going wrong with the EVO compared to other phones and together collaborated on a fix all within 2 days of finding the problem

Hey, wait a minute, wasn't the EVO released the same 2 days ago?

New Motorola Droid Unofficial Froyo (2.2) Update Supports WiFi And Overclocking

My Droid World is on a roll! Yesterday they brought us a working Froyo update for Motorola Droid but it came with a serious omission - WiFi was not included.

After taking a breather, a few hours later they produced another version, this time with support for WiFi and overclocking.

There are a number of download options, varying in the CPU frequency hardcoded into the kernel - from 800 MHz to 1250 MHz, so grab the one you want and see if it's stable enough (I promise you - it will be FAST).

Does Your EVO 4G Have A Dead Pixel Problem?

The folks at SprintDroids.com forums have alerted the community of some users reporting their EVOs having dead pixels. A dead pixel is essentially a dot on the screen, permanently stuck in one color.

It's not entirely uncommon for LCD screens to have dead pixels, and you can certainly ask the retailer where you bought the EVO to exhange it. The question is: is this problem worse with the EVO's screen?

Last Updated: July 21st, 2010

Yesterday, we reported that the EVO 4G was rooted, right in time for the launch day. The root method, however, required a full wipe and was quite tedious.

Updated: There Are Some Issues. UnrEVOked Is Here - One Touch Root For EVO 4G And Hero, Working Even After EVO's First OTA Update!

The same hour the root instructions were released, a new root method, called unrevoked, was promised and scheduled to come out by midnight. However, Sprint's OTA update fixing the SD card issue also patched up the vulnerability that both root methods used.

HTC EVO 4G OTA Update Comes Out In Time For Launch, Fixes SD Card Problems, Patches Security Issues, Disables Root Hole - Available Via WiFi As Well

The disappearing SD card issue plaguing a whole slew of HTC EVOs, sometimes resulting in data corruption, has been fixed by an over-the-air update, according to Sprint.

I alerted the community of the issue last week by raising some red flags and starting a few forum threads, and voila - Sprint and HTC scrambled the fix in time for launch. Thank you, everyone, for all your feedback!

The problem with the SD card, which most users incorrectly attributed to the card itself being faulty, ended up being a software bug, so no device returns should be necessary.
