What a day this has been at the Google I/O!

I have run around and talked to numerous extremely interesting people, including Googlers who have hinted (nothing is official until it's announced tomorrow and, of course, they could be trying to trick us) and pretty much unofficially confirmed some very interesting details about Android 2.2, also known as Froyo.

Performance

First up, I have confirmed that JIT will definitely be included. As we already broke earlier, simple benchmarks show a 450% improvement in speed over Android 2.1 Eclair, due to JIT.

But this is just the beginning. JIT can't help performance everywhere and in some situations has no effect at all, such as I/O operations or while running native code.

Due to the amount of information crammed into day 1 of the Google I/O conference, I am blitzing through everything that happened, keeping it short and to the point.

There was a special case set up at Google I/O today with pretty much every Android phone ever made to date, from all over the world. It was really impressive to realize how many Android phones are out there right now and really put things in perspective, especially if you compare to Apple and its couple of iPhone revisions.

I didn't snap pictures of everything and skipped common phones, like the Hero, Eris, etc.

I meant to post this in the morning but ran out of time, so this may be a little old news now. Apologies if you've already seen it.

Yesterday was day 0 of the Google I/O conference. During this day, presenting developers set up their demo stations, known here as sandboxes, register, check in, and last but not least - receive shwag, also known as "free crap".

This year, the official shwag included:

  • a Motorola Droid or a Nexus One
  • an official Google I/O t-shirt (displayed below)
  • 2 little Android figurines (displayed below)

After playing around with the figurines and throwing a party for them on my laptop (good times), I turned my attention to the t-shirt.

Confirmed: Official Sprint HTC Hero Android 2.1 Update Is Exactly The Same As The Leaked One From May 14th

Since a lot of you have been wondering, I wanted to post a brief confirmation that the official version of the HTC Hero 2.1 update Sprint released today is exactly the same as the one we covered on May 14th, 5 days ago.

Both files share the following characteristics:

  • 124139523 bytes (118M)
  • Version 2.27.651.5

HTC's servers are so slammed right now that I am getting about 3KB/s downloading - you might as well download the leaked file instead - they're exactly the same.

Excited about finally having Firefox running on your Android phone? Not so fast - Firefox for Android, codenamed Fennec, is still in early alpha stages. However, an alpha build released a few weeks ago has given us a decent preview and instilled hope of a great browser to come.

After being quiet for some time, Stuart Parmenter and Vladimir Vukićević, Mozilla engineers, today announced that they had launched the Fennec nightly build system.

This means that every night the latest and greatest (or buggiest, depending on the day) Fennec build will be uploaded for everyone to see, test, and report bugs on.

Oh how much I love HTC's website. It is clean, simple, and very well laid out - other mobile companies should learn from them. HTC is not a small company by far but manage to present all the information we need in a way that no other manufacturer site I've seen (<3 HTC).

Remember the HTC Wildfire revelation to the public yesterday? To keep the momentum going, this morning HTC launched their official HTC Wildfire site, full of specs, photos, and highlights. If you are interested in this phone at all, or if you want to see how different it is from your current device (which it is), you should definitely check it out.

The Garminfone is coming to T-Mobile very soon, so in order to help us figure out whether it is just a useless and superfluous toy or a candidate for your next phone/gadget, Engadget grabbed a review unit and put it to the test.

The Highlights

You can read the full review or if you want just the most important highlights, you can read the bullet points I handcrafted below, followed by a video and some photos:

  • Garminfone is coming to T-Mobile in June for $199
  • It has a 600MHz processor, a 3.5" capacitive screen, a 3MP camera, a 2GB microSD card, and runs Android 1.6, unlikely to be upgraded to 2.0+ any time soon, if ever, due to heavy customizations in the UI
  • if it's not obvious from the pictures, there is no physical keyboard
  • according to Engadget, Garminfone is the best mix of PND (portable navigation device) and smartphone to date
  • the phone is quite similar in build quality, size, and shape to Garmin G60, aka Nuvifone, which was running a custom Garmin OS and never ended up being too successful
  • there is no headphone jack… WHAT??

May 18th is starting with some great news for book lovers. Amazon has just announced that it would be releasing the official Kindle application for Android, available "soon".

The Kindle app is already available on the iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, PC, Mac, and BlackBerry, so Android is quite late to the party. Better late than never though - there is no WinMo app anywhere in sight.

Main Features

The Android application is, surprisingly, not going to be shy on features. In fact, some of them will one-up its counterparts on other platforms:

  • access all of your Kindle books without your Kindle
  • buy books right from within the Kindle app from a special Android optimized store and get them auto-delivered wirelessly - a feature that is not available on all devices
  • synchronize last page read and annotations between all devices using Amazon's "Whispersync" technology
  • preview books by reading their beginnings for free before buying

In order to use the app, you will need to use Android 1.6+ and have an SD card (Droid Incredible users, take note - your phone doesn't come with an SD card by default).

We get a lot of tips and leaks in our tips@androidpolice.com email (which I encourage you to use if you want to alert us of any unreleased news). Some of these leaks are pure conjectures, some make sense but have no foundation or proof, and some… some sound pretty credible.

Today, we have one of those leaks, and even though there is no proof that this information is true, I have reasons to believe that what the source is saying is not a lie.

The Leak

In 2 days, on May 19th-20th, the long-awaited Google I/O conference is going to be commencing in San Francisco, with all kinds of announcements about the future of Android expected, such as the details of Android 2.2 FroYo, Flash 10.1 on Android, FroYo speed improvements, wireless tethering, and Android Market updates.
