Analytic firm Distimo has released its report for June 2010, and the results are interesting. This may not be a surprise to Android users who have spent some time browsing the market, but a whopping 57% of Android apps are free. That’s an impressive percentage on its own, but it gets even better when compared to other app stores:

Amazing, right? Looks like the open mentality of Android pays off, as the Android Marketplace’s free rate is two times higher than anyone else's, excluding Palm’s App Catalog.

The title says it all: Samsung has sold a whopping 200,000 Galaxy S’ in the first 10 days in South Korea. That may not seem like a lot in comparison to the iPhone 4’s 1.7m in 3 days, but keep in mind that the iPhone 4 launched internationally. South Korea’s population (as of 2009) was just over 50 million people – meaning they’re less than 1/6 the size of the US.

A few weeks ago, Amzer sent us some sample products to review for the EVO. They included two silicone cases (one red, one black), a Micro HDMI to HDMI cable, and 2 screen protectors (one mirror, one clear).

Amzer is owned by Moftware, parent company of numerous smaller, more specific companies. The company isn’t some dinky accessory maker – they estimate that they sold 250,000 accessories for the EVO alone in the first two weeks after the phones release.

We’ve been seeing Android (and Ubuntu, for that matter) builds running on the HD2 for a few weeks now, and it looks like an early prototype build is now available for download.

Compared to what it takes to alter your OS on Android phones, it actually seems quite simple:

Android

Global instructions: Just extract to Storage Card root directory and run HaRET executable.

I want to say up front that I don’t have much faith in this. In fact, I only agreed to do it if I could clearly indicate how dubious I am in the article. So, I’m opening with a screenshot of just how sketchy this is:

If you haven’t read the article in the image (which I’m hoping you haven’t), here are the important details (according to the article):

Gaurav Jain, Google Android Product Manager, has said, “Google will combine music download service next version of Android launched for the U.S.

Over the past day or so we’ve seen a flood of Droid X reviews published, so we've decided to round up and summarize the best of them. For any readers who may need a reminder of the details:

  • Coming to Verizon July 15
  • $200 on contract
  • 4.3”, 854 x 480 px
  • 720p Video Recording
  • 8 MP Camera
  • 1 GHz Processor
  • Android 2.1 (Eclair) at launch, with 2.2 (FroYo) coming later
  • 8 GB onboard, 16 GB mSD card (24 GB total)
  • 3 mics – front, back, and bottom
  • HDMI out
  • Swype

Pretty impressive stuff, at least on paper.

Droid-Life has a source, including pictures and a video, showing that the Droid Incredible will be getting an OTA update… sometime. They don’t have an ETA, but it shouldn’t be far off. The key new features it brings are 720p video recording, 3G mobile hotspot, and (most importantly of all), the usual “DROID” red eye bootup.

Pretty awesome that when Android phones get OTA updates, they tend to bring awesome new features.

News for our European readers, this morning: Sony has announced that the Xperia X10 will receive a software update over-the-air (OTA) soon. To quote:

This update focuses on improving the general performance, speed and responsiveness of Xperia X10. For example, there are speed improvements in messaging tasks and camera UI. In addition we add a free back up and restore application so you’ll never lose your settings and information. In selected markets, PlayNow™ with premium apps and games will also be added.

Word over at Boy Genius Report is that the Samsung Moment II will be known as the Samsung Intercept. Technical details are a little scarce right now, but we do know:

  • Android 2.1 (Eclair)
  • 3.2” display (I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s AMOLED, ‘cause Samsung)
  • 4 row, slide-out keyboard
  • Wi-Fi (would guess 802.11n)
  • GPS
  • 2 Color Choices – Pink or Dark Gray

Given that Samsung doesn’t seem to be in much of a hurry to get their phones hotted-up via FroYo, I doubt they’ll update to Android 2.2 before launch.
