Verizon To Release Samsung Fascinate September 9 For $200 On Contract, Buy One Get Any Free

Not a bad news day for a Friday, eh? Android Central just got an awesome tip (and accompanying blurrycam photo from the Verizon system) which seems to confirm the rumored launch details of the Samsung Fascinate. Namely, the device will be launching 9/9 with new-contract pricing of $200. Better still, it'll be buy-one-get-any (BOGA) - in other words, it looks like you can actually get two Fascinate's for $200. Not a bad deal at all.

Next Up In Mobile CPUs: ARM Cortex-A9 - Dual Core, 2.5 GHz

It's hard not to love Moore's law, isn't it? Global Foundries and ARM revealed some details on the upcoming Cortex-A9 CPU architecture during GTC, and boy does it look like a hardware nerds dream. Thanks to a massive die shrink coupled with other architectural optimizations, word has it that the A9 will boast huge performance gains and significantly less power draw.

The majority of the benefits come simply from the die shrink. Modern chips (such as the ubiquitous Snapdragon CPU's) are based on the ARM Cortex A8 series, which is manufactured on either a 65nm or 45nm process. The A9, on the other hand, checks in at just 28nm; diminutive indeed.

Rumor Has It Samsung Galaxy Tab Will Go To Sprint

Seems like Sprint is really turning itself around lately, doesn't it? They've managed to stop bleeding customers in the past few months, and it's a fairly safe assumption that their ever-expanding lineup of awesome devices has something to do with it. Looks like they're looking to continue the trend, too: BGR's heard word that the Galaxy Tab will be headed to Sprint sometime in November.

They don't provide any details other than that, so hopefully this ends up being reliable. It does seem feasible - word on the street is that Verizon is slated to get a few tablets from Motorola, while we've heard nary a peep about any Sprint tablets before this point.

Engadget Previews Viewsonic 10" Tablet - Dual-Boots Win7 & Android 1.6

Last week, we found out that Viewsonic would be rebranding and selling a 7" and 10" tablet; the 7" tablet would be Android while the 10" would dual-boot Android and Win7. Now Engadget has a hands-on preview of the 10" with additional details, and suffice it to say there are some ups and downs.

Bad news first, though: the tablet runs Android 1.6. The reason for this lies in the CPU used, but that doesn't make shipping a tablet with an OS that's over a year old suck any less. Also bad news: Engadget was rather unimpressed with the screen:

We weren't impressed with the quality of the display, or with the pixel density, but at least the capacitive touch seemed to be working fine...

Samsung: Honeycomb (Android 3.5) Will Come After Gingerbread (3.0); Larger Honeycomb Tablet Coming

Disclaimer: initially, I was reluctant to pass this one on, but it looks like it may be more credible and less speculative than I first thought.

During IFA today, Samsung confirmed that Gingerbread is next and will be Android 3.0, and that it will be succeeded by Honeycomb (3.5). It is possible that things will change between now and then, but this is an official, public word from Samsung in direct response to a question - fairly concrete.

They also divulged that they're working on a larger (presumably larger than the Tab) tablet for Honeycomb. As for the Tab itself, it'll ship with Froyo (which we already knew), and will be updated to Gingerbread once it's released.

T-Mobile G2's CPU Clocked At A Paltry 800Mhz

Chalk this one up under the 'lame' category: looks like the T-Mobile G2's CPU ticks along at just 800 MHz. In a world of 1+ GHz smart phones, that's definitely something of a letdown.

A slower clock speed doesn't always equate to lesser performance - but without any solid previous benchmarks to illustrate what this new(er) CPU is really capable of, it's hard to say whether this is going to be nearly as adequate as T-Mobile claims.

In hindsight, the fact that the G2 is a HSPA+ device could have been something of a giveaway as to the underlying hardware - check out this piece from February 2009 that states that the Scorpion CPU will integrate CPU and GPU functionality, as well as HSPA+.

First Custom Motorola Droid X ROM Released, Gives (Partial) Finger To eFuse & Motorola

Awesome news today on the Droid X front: the first custom ROM for the Droid X has been released by birdman. For anyone not living under a rock, this is a pretty big deal - Motorola was pretty serious about locking down the Droid X, and it's a relief to see that manufacturers can't completely kill the aftermarket.

The ROM seems to be based on the earlier leaked 2.2 ROM, and has only a handful of customizations:

  • Deodexed
  • Busybox
  • Updated Superuser.apk (credits to chainsdd)
  • Removed
    • 3g hotspot
    • Kindle (market app)
    • Blockbuster (bankrupt company)

    • My Verizon (bad market app)
    • Maps (market app)
    • Voice search (market app)
    • Swype (removed for their constant anger towards rom devs)
    • Skype (market app)
    • Google search (market app)

The ROM can be downloaded via ROM Manager, and as far as flashing it goes, it looks like you'll need to be rooted and have ClockworkMod Recovery.

Real HDMI Unlocks Motorola Droid X's Crippled HDMI Functionality

A few months back (before it launched), we found out that the Droid X would have limited HDMI functionality - mainly, it would only work in gallery mode. Today, we stumbled upon a new app on AppBrain called Real HDMI that seems to remove that restriction. Check out the item description:

Samsung Hits A Milestone: Over 1 Million Galaxy S Devices Shipped In US

Samsung just sent out a press release that should help dampen the dullness today: according to Samsung, they've shipped over 1 million Galaxy S devices in the US. Not bad, especially considering they've only launched on 2 of the 6 carriers that will be getting the device. With such a hotly-anticipated and well-received line of devices, it's likely sales are really just getting started - after all, the Vibrant and Captivate only launched just over a month ago.

Samsung's Epic 4G will be launching on Sprint in just a few days (August 31), and rumor has it that Verizon's Fascinate won't be far behind.
