Hot on the heels of this morning's full and permanent G2 and Desire Z root, XDA-Devs members (apparently headed by grankin01) have released a similarly full and permanent root for the T-Mobile myTouch 4G. In fact, the method is very nearly the same, in grankin's words:

unforgiven512 [who contributed to the G2 root] deserves most of the credit for this tutorial as all I did was rewrite this tutorial in my own words (while looking at his in another window), edit the kernel module, and paste links to it and the hboot file with this tutorial.

Verizon's really steamrolling along with the Android train, aren't they? In addition to last night's official announcement of the Samsung Continuum, the Motorola Droid Pro and Droid 2 Global are now both up for pre-order. Just as we'd heard, the D2G looks to be $200 after rebates, while the DP, as announced yesterday, will clock in at $180 (both with a new contract).

Both devices are "world phones," meaning they pack both GSM and CDMA.

Samsung Contiuum

Right on cue, Verizon and Samsung have announced the Samsung Continuum, the newest member of the Galaxy S line of devices. Surprisingly, it looks like all the rumors had everything dead on (a rarity in the Android community). The details:

  • $200 on contract ($300 - $100 mail-in rebate)
  • Preorder begins November 11, goes on sale November 18
  • 3.4" SAMOLED screen up top
  • 1.8" SAMOLED "ticker" screen on the bottom
  • "Grip Sensor" along the bottom that lights up the ticker

Other than that, the specs are nearly identical to the Fascinate:

  • 1 GHz Hummingbird
  • Android 2.1
  • 5MP Camera with LED
  • WiFi (b/g/n)
  • 8 GB microSD in the box
  • Bing Maps
  • Bing Search

The ticker doesn't have all the capabilities of a normal screen, but from the look and sound of it, it has nearly everything an average user would need - and we're sure that whatever isn't there from the start will soon come from the dev community.

Looks like Google is hitting roadblocks at every turn with their eponymous TV hardware - which is really a shame, given just how much potential it seems to have. A few weeks ago, the major networks decided to start blocking Google TVs from accessing their content, whether it was via their proprietary feeds (i.e. ABC.com) or directly through Hulu. Just about the only method of streaming left was Fancast (which actually backdoors content from Hulu).

This has not been tested on devices with custom manufacturer UI's, such as HTC Sense. I can't actually check (as I don't have Sense anymore), but I would guess that it won't work as the lockscreen is completely different when using a manufacturer UI.

This morning on Reddit, I spotted an awesome post titled "I got rid of that stupid lockscreen clock font...," showing nothing more than a screenshot.

MIUI_brows1

Looks like the team at MIUI hasn't been resting on its laurels after releasing its insanely popular MIUI ROM - they've recently released Charming Browser for Android. Just like the ROM, the browser was initially released in Chinese. Luckily, XDA-Developers member jpsiemer immediately jumped on it and translated it to English.

Early reports indicate that aside from a few minor niggles - namely, a slightly longer initial load time - the browser performs as well as it looks.

wirefly_speedtest

Our good friends at Wirefly released a video a few days ago showing a browser speed test between the new T-Mobile myTouch 4G and Apple's iPhone 4. The results added another win for the Android crowd, as the myTouch 4G bested the iPhone 4 in both tests.

The win gets even sweeter, though: the second page loads faster on the MT4G, even with the embedded YouTube video (albeit, it doesn't actually load the video).

Small bit of news, but useful for those of us firmly entrenched in the Android fan club: Google has released an official Android skin for Gmail. Changes are light - mainly consisting of light gray circuits on a white background, and an infusion of green for highlights.

Engadget's landed a classic Blurrycam shot of Verizon's internal system showing the prices for a handful of current and upcoming devices. Namely, the Motorola Droid Pro, and the still-unofficial Droid 2 Global and Samsung Continuum.

verizon_pricing

In simpler, blur-free text, that's:

  • Motorola Droid Pro - $179
  • Samsung Continuum - $199
  • Motorola Droid 2 Global - $199

Not unreasonable at all, given that they're all high-end devices. I suppose this should also erase any lingering doubt anyone may have had about the two color choices for the D2 Global - we'll definitely be presented with the standard dark blue, as well as a white model.

The Motorola Droid 2 Global is really turning out to be the worst-kept secret since the Bay of Pigs invasion, isn't it? We've been hearing inklings of it since mid-September, including rumors that the CPU would be clocked at 1.2 GHz.

Now, Droid-Life's legion of tipsters have spotted two more official Verizon documents featuring the Droid 2 Global: a holiday ad featuring the D2G (above), and nothing other than a sheet listing the tech specs.
