As usual, Droid-Life has come through with another leak – this time, it’s the Droid 2 user guide, available for your download and viewing pleasure here. We already know most of the details about it, including the launch date (soft launch on August 12), and the specs:
Lookout’s App Genome Project: All Your Data Are Belong To… Somebody Else
They’ve also found a number of security vulnerabilities, including one that allows apps to see sensitive device data.
Lookout, an organization who produces the eponymously-named Lookout app (a free app to help protect your phone from would-be evil-doers) has come up with some scary data in their App Genome Project. To quote Lookout, the App Genome Project is the:
A few enterprising hackers over at AllDroid have come up with a simpler method for rooting the Droid. Similar to SimpleRoot, it’s a small program that provides a GUI with 2 buttons – “Root Me :)” and “Unroot Me :(,” and bundles in all necessary drivers and bits of code – thus removing the need to download and install the Android SDK.
German company Interpad has released details on their website about their up-and-coming Android tablet, slated (get it?) to be released later this year… in Germany. The devices are more costly than the other Android tablets we’ve seen by this point, but you’re getting one hell of a nice device for your money:
When Steve Jobs announced the iPad, he demoed Pulse – a super-slick RSS reader designed by some Stanford grads. Although Pulse had a minor hiccup (pulled from the App Store, then reinstated shortly thereafter), it became quite popular – today, the iPhone version has an average rating of 4.5/5 stars.
Chalk this one up as a novelty, because the usefulness is pretty low. HowToGeek (and by extension, an XDA forum member) have posted instructions for how to boot your PC into Android. The process isn’t too excruciatingly tricky if you’re willing to just burn the ISO to a CD, although if you opt to run Android from a USB key, you’re in for a slightly more involved process.
Details are scarce on this one, but a new shot of the HTC Vision has been leaked. With the shot came a few new details: it’s likely headed for T-Mobile (either in the US, overseas, or both), and will be named the G1 Blaze.
On Tuesday, we posted that the first nightly (experimental) Cyanogen Mod 6 (CM6) build for the EVO 4G was released the night before. True to the name, CM6 has released a new build every night since, bringing bug and feature fixes. After a number of you posted comments saying that you were running CM6 without any problems (other than the known non-functional features), I decided to take the plunge.
Ars Technica, via TechCrunch, published an article yesterday on the state of Android in China. The good news: Android is set to explode in China – just check out these facts (direct quote from TechCrunch):
Normally, to sideload (install from outside the official market) an Android app, you need to enable the "Unknown sources" option in Settings > Applications, then copy the app anywhere on the SD Card, and install it via a file manager, such as Astro.
All kinds of Droid 2 news floating around the interwebs the past few days. We already knew it was coming in August and replacing the original Droid, we caught some blurrycam shots a little over a month ago, and Gizmodo caught a hands on a week later. While financial information may be a little outside the norm at AndroidPolice, this piece is pretty relevant. Deutsche Bank reiterated its “Buy” rating on Sprint this morning, based on Q2 expectations. The relevant part of their explanation:
Not much to this other than the pictures, but it’s something. Images have popped up around the web showing an unnamed, previously-unknown slider device sporting a big blackberry-style keyboard. The trademark glowing red Droid eye is visible in one of the pictures, and the Motorola logo is visible in another (first and second images below, respectively).
Verizon’s support page for the Droid X now has details on an OTA update for the Droid X. The update brings a number of fixes:
Word at DroidLife is that the original Droid is being phased out over the next few weeks (presumably with some promotions coming to help move the last of them off shelves). This is likely in preparation for the coming Droid 2, which is coming sometime in August.
Up front, I’m going to say I never text while I drive because typing correctly and driving well are mutually exclusive – you can only do one at a time. That said, this app is cool, and it’s even cooler that it’s from Samsung (who has been super cool lately – check out our unboxing and hands on for the Intercept and Captivate, and a Vibrant unboxing is coming soon.)
