Oppo showed off some impressive camera innovations at MWC. Dubbed "5x Dual Camera Zoom," the breakthrough allows for 5x lossless zoom in a camera module that is only 5.7mm thick. That means little to no camera bump, in theory. The Chinese OEM is calling this the world's first "periscope style dual-camera technology."

This has been in development for almost a year. The camera itself uses wide-angle and telephoto lenses, and the housing for the latter uses a periscope-style structure. Everything has been shifted by 90°, which gives the lens the space for all this zoom. The setup also lends itself to the impressive 5.7mm thickness, which is supposedly 10% thinner than the 2x optical zoom lenses we see in most smartphones.

Also announced with this was a different take on Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). Instead of putting the OIS on the wide-angle lens like everyone else, Oppo has decided to place it on the telephoto lens. This means that even when you're zoomed in all the way, your images will be clear and stable.

How well this works in practice remains to be seen, but it sure sounds exciting. Be sure to check out the full press release below if you're interested in reading more.
