Instagram's focus on sharing pictures has expanded steadily ever since the Facebook acquisition, and now it joins its parent company in offering live video. After announcing the feature a few weeks ago, Instagram says the feature is rolling out to all US users this very day. It's a bit different than the way Facebook and others handle live video, though.

Instagram live video is really only live. You start a live stream from the app's Stories section, and all your followers will see a "Live" badge while you're broadcasting. Here's the unusual part: the video is gone once it's over. There's no option to watch an old broadcast. Instagram says this is done to make people feel more comfortable sharing things.

You don't have to wait for someone you know to start a live stream to test out the new feature. There will be a "Top Live" section in the app that shows you popular live streams happening at that moment. Just like the ones you follow, these video disappear once they're over. Keep an eye on your Instagram app—the feature should arrive in the coming days. Instagram usually delivers features like this via server-side changes.
