Republic Wireless, the mobile virtual network operator that was doing hybrid Wi-Fi service before it was cool, is now an independent republic. The company received a $30 million capital investment from its parent corporation Bandwidth, according to The Verge, which allowed it to become its own separate entity. The Republic Wireless blog says that aside from a necessary change in names on customers' Terms of Service agreements, no significant changes to the service or business model are planned.

The Verge also says that two major promotions are coming later this month, which we haven't been able to verify independently. The post says that Republic will offer the Moto Z for $349 from December 7th to the 12th, and the Huawei Ascend 5W for $129 from the 13th to the 19th. Here's the kicker: both will reportedly come with six months of free low-tier service, including unlimited calls and texts and 1GB of mobile data access. Not bad. We'll post separate stories for these offers when and if they go live.

Update: the embargoed press release from Republic confirms the upcoming discounts.

In appreciation of its loyal customers and interested followers, Republic will launch two special offers in December on its latest smartphones - $100 off a Moto Z Play at $349 (discounted from $449 from 12/7-12/12) and $50 off the soon-to-be-launched Huawei Ascend 5W at $129 (discounted from $179 from 12/13-12/19), both of which come with an unheard of contract-free six months free service (unlimited talk and text + 1GB cellular data service plan)*.

Republic Wireless started off as something of an experiment, offering rock-bottom phone plans with a limited hardware rollout for its custom Wi-Fi/Sprint setup. The company has expanded to also use the T-Mobile backbone and offer bring-your-own device-capability, as well as a much wider variety of plans and phones sold in the Republic store.
