The smart home revolution doesn't seem to be coming as quickly as some had hoped, but whenever it does break out, Amazon intends to be on the ground floor. To that end, the latest addition to Alexa's growing list of voice control connections is Control4, a semi-proprietary collection of home automation tools. The company announced a new Alexa skill that works with the Echo, Echo Dot, Amazon Tap, and any other device that can connect to the voice service.

Unlike more modular implementations, Control4's system of lighting, audio, home theater, security, and climate control systems are meant to be installed as a complete package by professional contractors. It's also compatible with standard connected home hardware from a selection of manufacturers. The company already makes apps for Android and iOS, but adding compatibility for Alexa will help complete the illusion that you're boarding the Enterprise when you walk through your front door.

If you happen to use both Control4 and Alexa, just open the Alexa app on Android and enable the Control4 Smart Home Skill to get started. Voice commands can be tied to Control4's "scenes" - for example, lowering the lights and switching the TV input to the Blu-Ray player to get ready for a little home theater. If for some reason you want to use voice commands outside of your home, a $99-a-year 4Sight subscription is required.
