Bitly

Android Police coverage: Bitly shortens the wait and releases its official Android app

Bit dot ly is the company that lets you put in a really long link and shrink it down so it fits in with your Pokémon Go tweet. The official Android app does pretty much the same thing as the mobile website version, but it has a Material Design interface and a focus on tracking the amount of hits each link has earned. It even breaks it down by time and location. So yeah, this app is perfect for social media managers, but other users probably don't need it in their drawer for the occasional link.

Bitly for Android is fully integrated with Bitly’s desktop experience. Copy, customize, and share your links straight from your phone and view top performing links on-the-go. Scrap long links. Shorten and brand your links to increase clicks while maintaining the tracking parameters you desire. Share your links and let us help with the rest. See channel data, uncover dark social, and learn when and where your audience is most engaged - all in one simple dashboard.

Sortd

Sortd is, apparently, an alternative skin-slash-extension for the desktop version of Gmail that puts all of your email into these very nice little digital sections. The Sortd mobile app is an extension to the, um, extension, but a lot of that cool design is somewhat lost on the smaller screen. Since it all ties into Gmail anyway, it seems like this will only appeal to those users who are super into the desktop version, to the exclusion of the actual Gmail app itself.

Get the most out of this app in conjunction with the Sortd Smart Skin for Gmail (which you can install from sortd.com). Sortd is basically "Trello for Gmail" - a completely new way to manage your Email and Tasks in a single app. With Sortd, you can put your Email on your Action Plan, and manage all your work from one set of customizable To do lists. This app is for people who constantly slip into the habit of using their Email Inbox as a To do list. Managing email is challenging - important conversations get lost in your Inbox and you lose track of important stuff.

Lens Launcher

The developers of Lens Launcher proudly label their app an "experiment." It's basically a giant grid of every single app on your phone that zooms in like a fisheye lens to let you actually select one. For some reason it reminds me of the "Unix system" sequence from Jurassic Park. It's definitely an acquired taste, especially since the interface has no room for widgets, but it's at least worth a look if you prefer to have everything in one place.

Lens Launcher is a unique, efficient way to browse and launch your apps. Instead of scrolling long lists or swiping through multiple pages, Lens Launcher implements two unique features:

  • An Equispaced Grid that displays all of your apps, regardless of screen size or app count.
  • A Graphical Fisheye Lens to quickly zoom, pan and launch apps using touch gestures.
  • Lens Launcher also includes a full Settings menu to tweak all aspects of the Lens; Distortion, Scaling, Icon Size, Haptic Feedback, etc.

Goodshows

Goodshows is a social network for TV fans, which is different from regular social networks... somehow. The system apes the Goodreads model to a fault, including a watchlist, user reviews, friends and followers, and built-in spoiler avoidance tools. To the app's credit, it plays nice with Material Design and has some fairly handy organization touches. Download it if gushing over Game of Thrones on Twitter or Facebook simply isn't intense enough for you.

Imagine never getting bored ever again. Meet the world's premier social network for TV geeks and movie fanatics.

Goodshows lets you:-

1. Follow your friends and like-minded reviewers to discover new movies and shows to watch, and discuss your favourites.

2. Rate and review all the shows that you watch. The app takes care of spoilers as well.

3. Keep track of all your favourite shows by adding them to your watchlist and get notified as new episodes are live.

4. Share your ratings, reviews and stats (a neatly designed share image) with your friends on Facebook and Twitter.

Project Sonoma

Project Sonoma is a corporate shift work management app. Basically it's a digital version of the big shift board that I remember from the interminable bi-monthly meetings in which everyone basically played Monopoly with their timeslots. The app allows you to beg others to cover or swap shifts with you in a formalized way, which means there will be a paper trail every time someone drops the ball. Right now it's in invite-only mode.

The one-stop app for deskless workers. See when you’re next scheduled to work. Get important on-the-job info. Chat with your teammates. And more. All from your phone. Project Sonoma is currently in Private Preview. If the business you work for has signed up to participate, you can install and start using the app right away. If not, get on our waitlist. We’ll let you know when the app is ready for you.

Tasmana - The Task Manager

Tasmana is another contender for the group task management throne currently claimed by systems like Trello or Basecamp. This one is designed to work equally well for single users or teams, but since both of those functions are already covered, the app is really only useful if your team is already using Tasmana. And since they're probably using Basecamp or Trello if the tried-and-true office whiteboard isn't enough, well, you get the point.

The Tasmana app is the task manager that allows you to greatly simplify the ordering, execution and controlling of any tasks. The app is perfect both personal use (as a todo-list), and among the family members or group of friends, to not forget to buy that present or to make that reservation. It’s ideal in professional environments, to organize team work and manage time in the best way. You can create groups of users to assign or take any tasks from them. Task authors can monitor the process of implementation of tasks and receive instant alerts on any progress.

Storm it

Twitter's character limit doesn't make it easy to rant on complex subjects, or indeed on simple subjects for which you want to employ a long string of expletives. This app allows you to write your War And Peace-length rant, then automatically splits it unto tweet-sized bites and sends it all out to your followers in one giant blob of text. It's a fantastic app for getting rid of all of your followers really quickly.

Storm it is simple app that allows you to add or collect your ideas / thoughts and share them as a Tweetstorm on Twitter. The term "Tweetstorm" (not Tweet Storm) was coined and made famous by entrepreneur, investor - Marc Andreessen. It’s a series of tweets from one person that starts with a number and a slash. Those numbers mean that this is the first Tweet of a longer thought, followed by the second, and sometimes third and fourth. This series of posts, known as a Tweetstorm, is a way to share thoughts and comments that are too long for the 140 character limit.

Walli - Arty & Cool Wallpapers

Wallpaper apps on Android are significantly less than a dime a dozen - a dime could probably get you hundreds of them if Google allowed developers to sell things for less than a dollar. Walli is different, because it's curated. That's about it - instead of an enormous gallery of questionably-obtained JPEGs, Walli relies on a considerably smaller gallery of certified fresh phone art from its community of artists. Art.

On average, nowadays, we check our phone over a hundred times a day. Our phone wallpaper being the first thing we see, it can really influence our mood and it is also a great way to express our unique personality. This is why we decided to create Walli, a creative wallpapers app, to make sure you always have a cool wallpaper at hand. We think it’s important that you can easily find inspiring and beautiful wallpapers that will make you happy and feel great every time you pick up your phone.

Coastiality VR

There's something about roller coasters that just seems to mesh with virtual reality, or at least the latest headset-based iteration of the tech. Coastiality is a theme park ride company that's equipping real roller coasters with VR headsets to enhance the experience. Obviously they can't cram the entire ride into your living room, but they can give you a VR/360 demo of four of those enhanced rides with this app.

Fancy enjoying a real rollercoaster ride in 360° or VR (Virtual Reality) from the comfort of your home? Do you want to experience how virtual worlds come to life on board Coastiality rides throughout theme parks around the world? Aircall

Aircall is a VOIP service that's designed to let support techs and sales teams use their personal cell phones for work. That sounds like a nightmare for everyone involved if you ask me (for the love of God, someone stop those scam artists from calling me to "boost my small business's Google rating"), but then I'm clearly not the target market. Check it out if you need to answer a bunch of calls from a bunch of people.

Aircall is the best phone system for support, sales or marketing teams. It's instant to set-up and use, runs on the smartphones and PC you already have, and connects call information to your other business softwares like Salesforce, Zendesk, Pipedrive or Slack.

Snot & Fluff - Kids Story Book

The latest kids story-book interactive app doesn't rely on any established intellectual property from Disney or PBS, which makes it notable all on its own. Nope, it's an original story about a pair of cutesy astronauts. It's also impressively deep for one of these games: in addition to the usual games, puzzles, and narrative segments, it includes a "bedtime story" mode that works offline and English, Polish, Russian, Spanish, and Chinese language options. The full version is under $3, but there's a free lite edition as well.

Mum, Dad, can I watch a movie? - how often do we hear these requests. This is where “Snot and Fluff - a Space Adventure” will speed to the rescue. This is an interactive story book with features of an adventure game for children aged 4 to 10. This is a funny and educational story of friendship, courage and helping others. It will take your child and yourself on an amazing journey to distant galaxies full of colourful planets. You will meet various creatures, strange animals and together you will experience an unforgettable adventure.

VUDU for SHIELD Android TV

Android Police coverage: SHIELD Android TV Update 3.2 is live with Plex server capability, VUDU 4K, NAS mounting, storage access from PC, and more

VUDU for Android TV is finally here.... possibly thanks to some generous help from NVIDIA. In the limited pool of stand-alone Android TV devices, the SHIELD is the only one with 4K capability, so it's pretty clear that that's the intention here. But the app should work on the Nexus Player, Razer Forge TV, and smart TVs equipped with Android TV as their operating system.

The cinematic experience comes to your home with VUDU for Shield Android TV from VUDU and NVIDIA.

• Watch new release movies (some before they’re even out on DVD or Blu-ray), family favorites, indie award winners, classics and more.

• Catch up on TV episodes as soon as the day after broadcast or binge-watch on complete seasons from premium cable channels like HBO, Showtime, AMC and more.

• Experience stunning 4K resolution blockbusters like Mad Max Fury Road, The LEGO Movie, In the Heart of the Sea, Man of Steel and more (4K UHD television required).

Nick for Android TV

Android Police coverage: Nickelodeon releases a new app for Android TV, cable login required

You'd think that a network as big as Nickelodeon would already have an Android TV app. You'd be wrong. "Nick for Android TV" is more or less the same thing as the Nick app for Android phones, minus the games. That means a pretty impressive collection of clips for the currently-running kids shows, plus a few full episodes... but only if you can put in a cable subscription login.

You can watch full episodes and hilarious videos from Nickelodeon on the Nick app for Android TV. We have all your favorite Nick shows including SpongeBob SquarePants, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Henry Danger, and a lot more. New videos are added all the time, and we have more episodes available to watch than ever before. Missed the latest episode on air? Get the most recent full episodes right here by asking your parents to log in with your TV provider.

PlayStation™Vue Mobile

Android Police coverage: Sony's PlayStation Vue Android app is out now

Remember PlayStation Vue, that alternative TV service thing that Sony was harping on about last year? Remember how we were all going to be freed from the oppression of cable TV? And then remember how we all just kind of forgot about it? Maybe that's because Sony focused so much on the apps for its own PlayStation hardware that Sling TV managed to swing all the attention. Now there's an Android app for the live and on-demand TV service. 'Bout time.

PlayStation™Vue is a new TV service with live TV, movies and sports, without a cable or satellite subscription. Now available on Android Mobile. Download the app and sign-in with your Sony Entertainment Network account to get started. Available nationwide.

  • Channels and pricing vary by city and plan
  • Android device must use OS 4.4 or higher
  • Broadband internet & compatible viewing device required. PS4™ / PS3™ system, Roku, or Amazon Fire TV is required. See psvue.com/FAQ for details.

LG VPInput

Have you ever wanted to control your Android device from your PC? Then go install AirDroid. But if you want to do it with a somewhat unnecessary manufacturer app, LG would like to introduce you to VPInput. It turns your computer into a sort of virtual Bluetooth dongle for your phone, allowing mouse and keyboard input with LG phones (and ONLY LG phones). It's all a bit iffy, but I have to admit that the custom shortcuts and clipboard features are pretty cool.

LG VPInput supports a function of controlling your Android Smartphone remotely(Bluetooth) using the mouse and keyboard of your PC.

1. Remotely control your Android Smartphone with the mouse on your PC

2. Remotely Input text on your Android Smartphone with the keyboard on your PC

3. Share the Clipboard text between your Android Smartphone and your PC (ex. CTRL+C, CTRL+V)

4. Send an immediately captured screen image of your Android Smartphone

5. Designate a shortcut of your Android Smartphone application on your PC (ex. Press F1, execute Call application)

Nokia Smart Home

Nokia made an app that... wait, Nokia made an app? I thought the company had been gutted by the last 90s corporate raider at Microsoft. Well anyway, this app controls a Nokia Optical Network Terminal, which is apparently one of those newfangled smart home hubs that plebian renters like me will never ever touch. So yeah, welcome back Nokia.

The Nokia Smart Home mobile application allows you to manage and control your Smart Home from anywhere in the world. Powered by the Nokia Optical Network Terminal (ONT) G-240WZ-A, your Smart Home app lets you control smart sensors, lights, locks, and more to create a Smart Home that simplifies everyday tasks and provides security and comfort.

Amazon Offers

Kindle and Kindle Fire owners will know Amazon Offers as those integrated ads that appear on their screens until you pay for them to go away. Why would you want the same thing on a standard Android phone? Who knows? But if you do, Amazon is happy to oblige. This app is only available on those super-cheap phones that Amazon is peddling to Prime users, though.

This system app powers the offers and ads on lockscreens of Amazon Prime exclusive phones while allowing uninterrupted access to personal notifications. Just tap the offer to learn more, swipe or unlock to dismiss.

Amazon Widget

And just in case the ads on your lockscreen didn't engage your consumer lust, here's a widget that does pretty much the same thing.

Enjoy fast, easy access to Amazon Deals of the Day and other limited-time savings and sales directly from your home screen. You can also search across all of Amazon, and quickly access your Amazon lists and orders.

This app is compatible with all Amazon Prime exclusive phones.

Lux Manager

Samsung sells some of those fancy smart lights that let you control them with custom colors, lighting patterns, and schedules. Here's the manager app for tweaking them to your heart's content. Unlike some other Samsung apps, this one will work with any Android phone or tablet running 4.2 or higher.

Lux Manager is the new lighting control app from Samsung. It's the smart & easy way to control Samsung lighting devices. Just launch the app and pick whichever color you want. With 16 million to choose from, you're sure to find the perfect tone. Turn on Music light mode to really get into the beat. With Music light mode the light reacts in time with the music. Would you rather fall asleep to gentle music and lulling light? Set a sleep timer. After the time you set, the light and music will be turned off automatically.
