Apps

(root) FlashFire

Android Police coverage: Chainfire's FlashFire No Longer Limited To Beta Testers, Now Available To All On The Play Store

FlashFire, from prolific Android modder and developer Chainfire, allows users to flash ZIP files without a custom recovery. That's incredibly handy for applying over-the-air updates or modification files without further digging around, taking one more step out of the process to applying all kinds of aftermarket features to your phone or tablet. It still needs root, of course. The app is free, but for a little more than three bucks users can remove nag messages and tip Chainfire.

FlashFire is the most advanced on-device firmware flasher available for rooted Android devices. It can flash full firmware packages from various manufacturers, as well as apply over-the-air (OTA) and ZIP updates - all while maintaining root, and without using a custom recovery. It also offers full device backup and restore functionalities in several formats. Relevant files can be stored on internal storage, SD cards, USB connected storage, or can even be streamed directly to and from your computer using USB or Wi-Fi.

Flamingo for Twitter (Beta)

Android Police coverage: Flamingo Is A Beta Material Design Twitter Client From The Maker Of Weather Timeline

How many Android Twitter clients do we need? As many as we can get until Twitter pulls its head out of its ass and rescinds that token policy. The latest one is Flamingo, which comes from the developer of the much-loved Weather Timeline. It's a fairly straightforward setup as far as Twitter goes, but the interface is slavishly Material and surprisingly adjustable to boot. The only thing it's missing is a good widget, but then it's still in beta.

Flamingo is a bright and colourful Twitter client, which a simple and greatly customisable interface. It provides you with the Twitter experience you know and love with beautiful material design. You can easily switch between several accounts, and individually theme those accounts. GIFs can be played inline in the timeline and you can easily add them to your tweets (powered by Giphy). Hover preview allows you to quickly preview photos, gifs and user profiles by simply long pressing on an icon or image.

Android Police coverage: Opera Invites US Users To Test Its Concept 'News & Search' Browser

Opera has been getting all diverse up in that browser space. Their latest effort is a shared news app that brings in stories from a variety of sources... and also there's a web browser in there. The feed looks similar to other browsing news apps, and the browser uses Opera's trademark bandwidth compression engine, but that makes me wonder why this isn't just an added plugin for Opera itself? The app is experimental at the moment.

Get Opera’s #1 browser for discovering interesting stories and searching the web. Faster search and a strong new content discovery engine helps you get the latest news, trending topics and websites in no time. All through a brand new, intuitive interface. Browse hot topics, trending & breaking news per category and even connect your Twitter account to get an overview of all the news stories shared by your friends’ networks. Stories you want to keep or share can easily be added to the built-in reading list.

Music Alarm Clock Sleep Timer

There are a lot of alarm clock apps available on Android, but this one aims to emulate old-fashioned radio alarms by waking you up to music. It also has a focus on hardware inter-operability, since it can stream that music over Bluetooth, DLNA, UPnP, or proprietary systems like Sonos or Bose wi-fi speakers. The only thing it doesn't support... is Chromecast. Huh.

More than just another music alarm clock. Using SleepCast's unique streaming capability, you can choose to wake up with your own music playing on your phone, Bluetooth speakers, wireless speakers or network-connected DLNA or UPnP hifi. Works with Sonos, Bose and many more. Whether you love dance, blues, rock or any other genre, get SleepCast and start every day with your own unique soundtrack.

Joystick

Joystick is a news aggregation service for gamers. It's not tied to any specific site, instead gathering stories from the usual suspects, breaking them down into topics, and presenting them to you in a single feed. The app doesn't appear to have much of a focus on a social element, which might actually be a relief to some people. The interface can handle standard text and video with equal panache.

The latest video game news, reviews, live Esports tournaments, video game shows and your favourite pro gamers' news piped into your pocket. Joystick is a must-have app for gamers that want to follow top class gaming news from hundred of sources across the globe. The Official Joystick app for Android features:

  • Customizable news feed
  • Live Stream Esports Tournaments
  • Follow your favourite pro gamers
  • Video game news and reviews
  • Watch video game shows
  • Hundreds of top class gaming sources globally

Lumio Cam - The Real Camera

Lumio is the latest attempt to add DSLR capabilities to plain old smartphone cameras... which are considerably less plain these days. On top of the "retro" user interface and a few extras like grid positioning and auto-levelling, the app offers contrast, metering, ISO and white balance settings, adjustable focus, and exposure adjustment. The app supports the latest bells and whistles, like 4K video recording and adjustable framerates.

Lumio Cam is a full featured camera application inspired by real photo cameras and made by enthusiastic photographers to combine the look and feel of professional DSLR cameras with the latest technology of smartphones. We Run – Social Running

These days every smartphone manufacturer is also a fitness company. That being the case, Sony has an uphill battle if it wants its new We Run app to take on the giants in the category, but it's off to a good start with a solid interface and a system that works with just audio cues during exercising. There's also a system that allows semi-anonymous interacting with local runners, even during a run. Though the app comes from Sony, it will run on any Android device from 4.2 on.

You’ll never run alone. Do you like running, but miss the support of a running mate? Or do you lack the time to meet up? Get motivated with We Run and get in shape. We Run is a free social running application that connects you in real-time with another runner during your trainings. There is no need to watch the screen while working out: you will hear all you need to know through your headphones (also while playing your music app).

Preparture

Preparture is a travel app that focuses on managing your time at least as much as managing your movement. The estimations of how much time it will really take to get through the airport or the bus terminal are particularly handy if you're unfamiliar with a new city. There isn't a whole lot here that you haven't seen in similar apps, but it's free and easy.

Preparture, Your On-Time Travel App. See the sites, take care of business, AND catch your bus, train, or plane on time.Just enter some basic information and Preparture does the rest. It shows you:

  • Nearby places to go and things to do.
  • How to get there.
  • How much time you have to spend at those places before leaving for the airport, bus, or train.

Truple - find help from people

Truple is sort of like the volunteer section of your local Craigslist hub, but with a better interface. People share what they need, other people engage with them, and (hopefully) they come to an arrangement. The app supports everything from a simple local recommendation to a huge volunteer effort, and the browser allows users to see local needs in a useful map interface.

Truple is a social engagement platform to find help & make new connections by engaging with people nearby. Share your needs to find help from relevant people living near you, connect and interact with them. Share, connect, & engage, it’s easy.

A: Share your needs by creating a post

B: People near your location can see you post & the interested ones will connect with you

C: Chat with them & decide if you’d like to engage

Microsoft IT Showcase

Microsoft really wants to sell products to your IT department. This combination social network-blog-app-thing is basically an elaborate advertisement for its own products, but IT managers may still find some useful information in the litany of posts and how-to articles. There are downloadable courses and live sessions with Microsoft experts.

How does Microsoft do IT? Technology professionals often ask how Microsoft uses its own solutions to empower employees and drive productivity. What were the initial catalysts for change? The challenges? The benefits? You can find those answers here. Microsoft IT Showcase provides what no one else can—the inside story of how Microsoft does IT. By detailing how Microsoft rolls out technology solutions across its own enterprise environment, this app will inspire and equip you with the resources to inform your most crucial IT business decisions.

Fringle

Fringle is an app that aims to quickly share your location with a group and pick a centralized place to meet. It's a pretty simple intention, but one that can save calls or texts to multiple people at a time. Best of all, the location sharing is temporary, so you don't need to enable a stalker (or your mom) to know where you are at all times just for a lunch meeting.

Fringle is a social hangout platform for friends and family using private, temporary location sharing. Whether you're out with a large group for dinner, or about to carpool on the way to work, or even pick your loved one off the airport, or guide someone new to the city, use Fringle to bid adieu to all the hassles involved in getting there.

Jukestar - Jukebox for Spotify

Jukestar is an app designed to allow multiple users to collaborate on a playlist, ideally at a party. Basically it creates a blank playlist, and each guest can connect to the app through his or her phone and add songs in turn. Users get to vote up or down on new songs, and the ones with the most upvotes float to the top of the order. The only downer is that it needs Spotify Premium to work.

Love great music and have Spotify Premium? Use the Jukestar jukebox to start the music democracy at your next party. Fire the DJ; with guest request and voting capability, now everyone can get involved in the music:

★ No one can hog the playlist

★ The good stuff gets played

★ The bad stuff disappears.

Create a party and share with your guests. They can now use their phone (without needing Spotify or an app) to make requests from the millions of tracks available on Spotify, vote for the songs they like and veto the songs they hate.

Tribeca Shortlist - Movies

Do you need another movie streaming service on your phone or tablet? No? Well you've got one anyway. This is a proprietary streaming service from Lionsgate with a focus on indie movies (and a somewhat stretched division of "indie" in places) - the Tribeca name is more or less just a bit of marketing. It offers a 14-day service trial before hitting you with a $5-a-month charge. Whether that makes sense for you will probably depend on the curated and rolling movie library.

Tribeca Shortlist is a premium movie streaming service from Tribeca Enterprises and Lionsgate. Tribeca Shortlist offers a diverse selection of films and features personally curated by actors, directors and more. Find out why Gary Oldman loves “Husbands and Wives,” or how Tom Hiddleston learned to love Shakespeare after seeing “Much Ado About Nothing.” Only Tribeca Shortlist presents personal recommendations from the people who know and love movies most.

Evie

Evie hopes to add a universal search to Android... you know, on top of the one that already comes with Google apps. It includes the standard app search and even a few contextual results, but the big draw is integration with services like Uber for calling cars or ordering delivery. The utility of the app is probably limited to how many of its "universal" functions you can find to use on a regular basis, but it does support custom text shortcuts.

Meet Evie. A faster way to use your phone. Evie is universal search across your device. By typing only a few characters, you can:

  • Launch any app
  • Call, text, or email any of your contacts
  • Look up places, movies and TV shows, musicians, apps, and Web pages
  • Get a ride with Uber
  • Stream movies on Netflix or Hulu
  • Listen to music

PVP Live Esports

Here's a gaming app that focuses exclusively on live video game tournaments, or as they're incorrectly and commonly labelled, "esports." PVP includes both news and live videos of the most commonly played competitive titles, including shooters, fighters, MOBAs, and strategy games. Channels are broken down by individual games or by pro teams, and a scoring system is upgraded by the second according to the description.

PVP Live is the original esports media company – built by fans exclusively for fans. Get the latest breaking news, videos, scores, highlights, and expert analysis live – anywhere, anytime. Know what’s important – right now. Get alerts for everything you care about – games, teams, events, and more. Manage it all from your device or the web – wherever you go, we’re there. No lag, no gimmicks, and no limits.

Dango

There's a joke in here about a silent J. But this app doesn't have anything to do with Django, unchained or otherwise. It's a floating tool that lets users insert a collection of emoji, GIFs, and sticker images into any text field. So if you want that, here it is.

Tap on Dango to find the best emojis, GIFs and stickers while messaging in any app. Dango is powered by artificial intelligence that has been trained to understand how you're feeling based on what you or your friends say. You can trust Dango to recommend some exceptional emoticons. With just a few short taps, you can search through MILLIONS of funny images free of charge courtesy of Giphy to make your friends laugh.

Jiyo

Jiyo is a personal tracking app, but instead of fitness it's focused on the more nebulous idea of "personal wellness." As someone who wouldn't know self-actualization from a yoga pose, I can't really help you there - it looks like a bunch of diary functions and motivational macros to me. The app description says that it will remind you to do good things and not to do bad things, so I guess it's also a mix of personal trainer and priest, too.

Jiyo is your personal well-being companion. We’re a comprehensive digital platform that lets you engage, learn, and interact with a diverse range of information, articles, videos and reminders that help you be your best self. Our intuitive technology tracks your behaviour by connecting with wearables and then offers insights and suggestions based on your habits and activities. This is true holistic health.

Owlet

Owlet is a tiny pulse oximeter (heart rate monitor) and oxygen monitor for infants that connects to the local network and reports its results to smartphones. It's a pretty ingenious gadget that offers some much-needed peace of mind to parents. In addition to alerts for low heart rate or oxygen levels, the app includes live support and hardware settings for the base station.

Owlet is designed to alert you if your baby stops breathing. It uses hospital technology, pulse oximetry, to monitor your baby’s heart rate and oxygen levels as they sleep at night. Just place the Smart Sock on your little one’s foot before bed and Owlet is designed to send you alerts about their well being from the Owlet Base Station and your smartphone.

SAIP

This app is a sort of nationwide alert system for France. It's free, available in French and English, and operated and maintained by the country's centralized emergency services. If you live in France or you're visiting, it couldn't hurt to keep this thing installed for live alerts.

SAIP, meaning "système d’alerte et d’information des populations" (system to alert and inform populations) is the official government mobile alert application from the Ministry of the Interior for smartphones running iOS and Android. This free application allows users to receive alerts in the case of exceptional events (nuclear, hazardous materials, and hydraulic structure failure alerts, etc.) that may result from an attack within a specified geographical zone, providing that the user’s geolocation settings are activated and that the application is active.
