Koush had to take his device mirroring tool Vysor off the Chrome store last week after H.264 owner MPEG-LA came calling with a big bill. It seems the H.264 decoder in Vysor entitled MPEG-LA to royalties on Koush's free app. Well, after a weekend of coding, Vysor is back with a new decoder and a subscription option.

Koush still owes for all the previous downloads of Vysor, though he's not saying how much. Thus, the subscription model. If you want to keep using the new Vysor free, that's cool. For $1.99 per month or $9.99 per year you can get the pro upgrade, which includes the following:

  • High quality mirroring (free is 500Kbps, Pro gets you up to 2Mbit). This was made possible due to the new decoder.
  • Fullscreen mode.
  • Drag and drop files and APKs.
  • Vysor Share.
  • More features to come.

The new decoder is the Pepper VideoDecoder included in Chrome v48 and later. This decoder is not only more efficient than the Broadway.js decoder Vysor used before, but it's fully licensed and free to use. So, Vysor can do more things now, which is good seeing as there's a premium tier. You can grab the updated Vysor and get the premium features right now.
