Apps

Airtime - All together now

Android Police coverage: Four Years Later, Airtime Relaunches To Bring You And Your Friends Into The Same Virtual Room

Airtime, or at least the latest incarnation of the app, is a chat service built for "rooms" from the ground up. Imagine it as a modern version of the old AOL or Yahoo chat rooms, but meant for your friends and integrated with a ton of new web features. On top of the usual bells and whistles like video and photo support, it includes a "signal" button that lets others know when you're in the same area.

Hi. This is Airtime — the best way to stay close to your friends and family anytime, anywhere. Your Airtime rooms help you stay in touch with your groups. Ramen crew, close friends, bookless book club, school... Up to six people can video chat as a group at the same time, from next door or across the world. You can also watch videos and listen to music together while chatting. Make sure your people have good taste. Everybody thinks they're a DJ these days.

Random Flix

Android Police coverage: Random Flix Plays A Random Netflix Episode When You Don't Want To Choose For Yourself

This app is absolutely essential for couch potatoes like me. Open the app, select a show on Netflix, and it will play a randomized episode - it's sort of a show-specific "shuffle" button for television. It's perfect for comedies, not to mention about ten thousand episodes of Star Trek and Doctor Who. Throw in a TV and a Chromecast and you're set for life.

Have you ever wanted to watch a show on Netflix, but can't decide what episode to watch? Well then this app is for you. Random Flix allows you to easily search through every available show on Netflix, and then play a random episode. You can even save your favorite shows for easier playback later.

Radon - Share using Ultrasound

Android Police coverage: Radon Uses Google's Nearby API To Easily Share Links To Other Devices

Radon is neither elemental nor radioactive, it's a new sharing service that sends shared items (from Android's various "Share" menus) to nearby phones or tablets. It does this by sending links, photos, or what have you using a series of sub-sonic pulses from the speaker to create the initial connection, then switching over to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. It's fast, and assuming everyone has an Android-powered gadget with speakers and microphones, more or less universal.

Skip QR codes or NFC, Radon lets you share to everyone nearby, as long as you have the app open. As soon as they open Radon on their device, they'll automatically open whatever you shared, on as many devices as you want. Radon uses your sensors to broadcast links, so you don't need to pair or tap. As long as the other device is nearby, Radon just works. Radon uses sensors you already have, and everyone else has including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Ultrasound. It does everything automatically, so all you have to do is tap share.

The Rock Clock™

Android Police coverage: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's Rock Clock App Has The Objectively Best Alarm Tones Ever, No IAPs

This is an alarm clock made by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, famous wrestler and actor. (Or at least it's being promoted by him.) Because it's all about accomplishing goals and stuff, there is no snooze button. Instead it comes with a daily motivational video message from Mr. Johnson. "Rock Time" will sync your personal alarm with The Rock's... which seems like it would get old really quickly.

Android Police coverage: Now That Twitter Has Murdered Fenix, Finch Is A Decent (And Free) Alternative Third-Party Client For Android

Screenshot Join

Smartphone screens, by their very nature, sometimes don't show a lot of information at once. That makes grabbing a bunch of said info tricky, especially when it's in the form of a long vertical list or image. This app helps to catalog smartphone-formatted pages by seamlessly joining screenshots into a super-long (or wide) image. It's a fairly simple process: take a bunch of screenshots, open the app, and stitch them up, no root necessary. Nice.

Join Screenshot app helps you to merge multiple screenshots into a long picture - Share a long text conversations or a website with friends. Don't clutter your friends with tons of screenshots, but send just one image.

  • Screenshot join helps you to join screenshots vertically and horizontally.
  • It's quick & easy.
  • Easily stitch & share multiple screenshots in one long screenshot.
  • Several screenshots are put into one tall screenshot
  • User can easily select the captured screenshot for merging.
  • You can select two screenshots and set the position simply by dragging on it and make long screenshots.

Tomahawk Player Beta

Tomahawk is an open-source music player that hunts down music and serves it up to you like an over-enthusiastic cat. The idea is that you give it a search term and it finds the song or album you want from a wide collection of paid and free services, though of course you'll need to tell it which paid music sources you have access to. The app is open source and it syncs with the Hatchet service.

Please keep in mind that Tomahawk and the different plugin apps are still under development. Bugs and crashes are still to be expected. Music is everywhere, now you don’t have to be. Tomahawk, the critically acclaimed multi-source music player, is now available on Android. Given the name of an artist, album or song Tomahawk will find the best available source and play it - whether that be from paid or free online streaming services, local network sources or your phone’s local storage.

The Movie Hop

Have you ever taken off an entire day just to go watch movies at the theater? Me neither. But the creators of Movie Hop have, and they'd like everyone to give it a try. The app lets you select up to five different currently-playing movies in the theater, then shows you a plan for seeing them all in the most efficient way possible with the least wait in between showings. It's certainly an interesting idea, and the only thing it's lacking is the ability to buy tickets from your phone.

There's never a shortage of good movies to see in theaters. The Movie Hop makes planning a day at the movies easy by saving you time and effort when planning to watch one or multiple movies. Enter which movies you want to watch and The Movie Hop calculates for you all possible movie combinations, giving you the option to choose from the one that works best for you. Each combination conveniently includes the total wait time between movies and total time spent at the theater.

Map for Game of Thrones

HBO's Game of Thrones is big and complicated - I've read all the books and I still get confused about what exactly the characters onscreen are doing and where. This handy app is a map of Westeros and the surrounding continent, showing you all of the important places and (even better) the important stuff that happened there. It even has a timeline view that lets users see how the plot and characters progressed through a specific location. Neat!

The Map for Game of Thrones was developed using vector graphics to provide you with the best level of detail and performance possible. The map was optimized to show details depending on the level of zoom selected. Zoom in to view more details.

  • Recap Mode - by selecting an episode from one of the previous seasons you will see the scenes placed on the map. Using the navigation controls you can go through each scene - see the characters, read a scene synopsis or the full transcript.
  • Character Information - view detailed information about all the characters in the show (biography, appearance, history and quotes).
  • Point of Interest info - read detailed information on all regions, cities, castles and other points of interest by selecting the icon or label on the map.

Voisi Recorder & Transcriber

Voisi Recorder is, wait for it, a voice recorder app. Instead of the rather basic tool included in Android and most manufacturer skins, this one is designed for serious, long-form recordings, like speeches or lecture notes, which are automatically transcribed. The quick activation via a notification is a neat trick, and the interface is impressive. If you prefer to record on the go it works well with Bluetooth accessories, and the app includes a call recorder (check your local laws to see if this is legal with or without notification).

Save your time and organize your life – record and get automatic transcriptions of your recordings. With automatic transcriptions you will find what was said, but not written.

•  Automatic transcriptions of your recordings. Robot-made – human-readable.

•  Record your phone calls and voice notes. No root, it just works.

•  Import your recordings from 3rd party apps on the fly (including call recorders).

•  Voice notes are in sync with your ongoing calendar events.

•  Record voice notes in one click right from Notification bar.

•  Easily navigate and search through your recordings.

•  Listen, add text notes and share your recordings.

•  Backup your recordings and SMS to email.

•  Choose what calls to record – all, unknown numbers or just your contacts.

•  Processing enhancements for high-quality recordings – echo and noise suppression, silence detection.

•  Works with Bluetooth and wired headsets.

Open365

Open365 is an open-source alternative to Office365, integrating some cloud sharing tools with freebies like LibreOffice. Calling it competitive with Microsoft's paid option might be a little generous, but for those of us who are used to making do with free software, it's a nice option.

Open365 is the first open source productivity suite in the cloud. Powered by open source tools like LibreOffice, Kontact, Seafile or Jitsi, it delivers the full cloud experience 100% open source. Create and edit files. Share files with your team mates. Communicate with them. And using Open365 android app, sync your files with the cloud.

Card Case: Share cards nearby

Wow, how many times are they going to try and reinvent the humble business card? This time it's leaning on Google's Nearby tech to instantly share basic business profiles. It sounds like a nifty idea for meetings and trade shows... so long as everyone is using the same app. Which they aren't, which means you'll inevitably have to carry business cards anyway, so why even bother? At least the digital kind has a search function.

Leave your paper business cards at home. With Card Case you can create your digital business card, and share it with people nearby in seconds. Using Google’s Nearby technology, the Card Case app exchanges your business cards with people around you. You don’t need to create any account or send emails. And it works instantly.

  • Share your name, photo, email, phone number… any information you want
  • Exchange cards with one or multiple people near you, at the same time
  • Only exchange your business card when you want to
  • Keep all the cards you received for later
  • Search your received cards

FreshTeam

FreshTeam is the latest team-based messaging app meant for small companies. This one is apparently super-focused on your location - when logged in, everyone can see where you are on the map view. That's kind of creepy, but for some very specific fields I can see how it would be useful. It includes easy functions for group chats and calling. Like all of these tools, it's really only relevant if your employer is using it.

FreshTeam is a messaging app that saves mobile teams time. You see your team on a map, have group calls, and do other amazing things not possible with texts or email. Connect with colleagues with your FreshTeam username. Phone numbers are not necessary. View where team members are now, down to the address. No time wasted figuring out who is where. Control who you share your location with and when. FreshTeam is private.

r for Reddit

At this point there are so many Reddit clients for Android that you need scientific notation to count them all. The latest is "R for Reddit," which is more focused on browsing the actual links than the usual commenter rigmarole. That isn't to say that you can't browse comments or leave them, though. The main page can be customized, and photos are integrated into the links.

Reddit is an entertainment, social news networking service, and news app where community members can submit content, such as text posts or direct links. Redditors can then vote submissions up or down to organize the posts and determine their position on the App's listing. The submissions with the most positive votes appear on the main page or the top of a category. Content entries are organized by areas of interest called "subreddits". The subreddit topics include news, gaming, movies, music, books, fitness, food, and photosharing, among many others.

Fitso Running & Fitness App

Fitso is another workout app, but this one seems to take a "kitchen sink" approach to its tools. It has workouts for specific muscle groups or entire sporting disciplines, GPS tracking for running or cycling, a weight tracker, instructional videos, and a digital coach. If you're looking for an alternative to more established apps and services like RunKeeper, give it a try.

Whether you’re getting off from the couch to 5k, cycling every day, diving deep in the marathon training or simply pursuing a weight loss plan, Fitso can help you achieve all your fitness goals. Track your runs with the most accurate GPS tracker, measure performance, chart your weight loss, workout at home, consult a dietician or fitness coach and much more with Fitso: the fitness and running app trusted by thousands of fitness enthusiasts, recommended by every personal coach. All fitness activities are fun with Fitso.

Mast

Mast is a VOIP service intended for companies to use for managing all of their employee communications. The idea is to consolidate desk phones and cell phones into a single number, with all of the usual phone tools you're used to with a standard cell. It has a unique tool that automatically uses the correct VOIP number based on which contact you're calling. The service costs money, but domestic calls and texts are free.

Mast Mobile reinvents mobile for the modern workplace. Companies have one number for each employee, not separate desk and mobile phones. Employees carry one device for both work and personal use, with separate numbers for the business and personal contacts—and companies pay only for business use. Mast Mobile is now available for business. We’re rolling out services for individuals in coming months. Get updates at mastmobile.com.

Guardian VR

Guardian's first VR app is somewhere between a game and a museum piece. It's designed to simulate the experience of being locked into solitary confinement in a US prison, with the intent of highlighting the psychological damage this can cause. It's ideally meant to be "experienced" with a Cardboard VR headset, but the app can be played in fullscreen if you don't have one handy.

Our first VR piece, 6x9 takes you to a virtual cell, telling a story of the psychological damage of extreme isolation. Right now, more than 80,000 people are in solitary confinement in the US. They spend 22-24 hours a day in their cells, with little to no human contact for days or even decades. We invite you into this world. You can watch the film with or without Cardboard.

Beme

Beme is a video app that allows you to start a video with a gesture, then post it to the Internet and wait for views and likes to rack up. Yeah, it's a lot like Vine... except that it seems to be actively encouraging vertical videos and video "reactions." So it's basically condensed and concentrated evil. Then again, it comes from a "YouTube celebrity," so that's to be expected.

Beme is the simplest and most unfiltered way to share your personal experience. Instantly capture real moments from the world around you with a simple gesture and without interruption. Get a global view of how friends, family and interesting people from places near and far honestly live their lives, and send them genuine reactions as you watch along.

  • Capture video without touching a button
  • Automatically share what you see -- no preview, no review
  • React in real-time to your friends’ experiences
  • Watch an endless feed of perspectives from all over the world
  • Find compelling people to follow and see what it’s like to be them

Manufacturer And Tie-In Apps

Logitech Harmony for TV

Android Police coverage: Logitech Harmony App Arrives For Android TV [APK Download]

Why would you need a remote app for Android TV? For controlling things that aren't your TV. Mostly this is a way to interact with Logitech's proprietary Harmony Hub without having to dive into the tiny-type menu on one of the expensive remotes. At the moment it may be exclusive to Sony's Android TV-powered sets - it's showing as incompatible with the SHIELD TV.

Use the Logitech Harmony app for TV to quickly control connected smart lights, blinds, and thermostats directly from the screen, all without interrupting your favorite shows. The app works with any Logitech Harmony hub-based remote, from Harmony Elite to Harmony Hub (sold separately). Getting started is easy. Install the app and sign in using an existing Harmony account. The app will display your personalized Harmony Activities. You can control your smart home directly from the TV screen without interrupting what you’re watching.

Google Fiber

If you use Google Fiber, then I hate you. Seriously, pure hatred. Here I am toiling under the evil boot of Comcast while you're enjoying fast, reliable fiber service from a company that doesn't objectively despise you. But since you have Google Fiber, you might as well install this Android app. It can manage the settings on your local Wi-Fi network, test your insane Internet speeds, and retrieve your billing information.

With the Fiber app, managing your account and Wi-Fi network is fast and easy. Use it to pay your bill, run speed tests, edit your Wi-Fi settings, or visit our Help Center, all from your mobile device. Manage your Google Fiber Wi-Fi network with ease. Samsung Gear 360 Manager

Android Police coverage: Samsung's Gear 360 Action Camera Gets Its Own Manager App, Compatible With Galaxy S6, S7, And Note 5 Series Phones

Samsung's 360-degree action cam isn't available in the US yet, but the manager app for transferring and editing video is. Because "synergy" means "give us more money" in Samsung's corporate dictionary, it's only compatible with Galaxy S6, S7, and Note 5 phones.

Use the Samsung Gear 360 Manager application to access the following:

  • Connecting to and disconnecting from the Gear 360
