It was a nice surprise when Samsung announced that its new flagship phones would be running Android 6.0, and that they were bringing back the much-requested expandable storage was icing on the cake. The news that the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge would not support adoptable storage, Android Marshmallow's ability to take an SD card and partition it as semi-permanent device storage, was met with less enthusiasm. But all is not lost, expandable storage fans: long-time modder and ROM developer Paul "MoDaCo" O'Brien has got this covered.

O'Brien has a short tutorial on how to turn SD card storage into adopted storage on the S7 and S7 Edge. It's not particularly difficult if you're used to a little ROM adjustment (though you will need a PC and a working version of ADB). Best of all, this method doesn't require root, so you can apply it to a stock Samsung phone without missing out on standard over-the-air updates or breaking Samsung Pay. The takeaway from O'Brien's method is that instead of actually disabling adoptable storage at the system level, Samsung is merely hiding it in the user interface.

I think it's fair to say that a small but considerable number of customers are passing on the Galaxy S7 because of its lack of adoptable storage. Now that there's a (relatively) easy way to achieve it, and since expandable storage is getting cheaper and cheaper all the time, you can finally cram every episode of Boardwalk Empire onto a Samsung phone without having to search through the external directory.
