The country's fifth largest carrier is hoping to start off 2016 by picking up a few more customers. Starting today, US Cellular will let you get 6GB of data for $40 per month, as long as you sign a two-year contract. This offer is available online and in stores. Though, with the competition moving away from two-year contracts, think carefully about whether this will save you money long-term.

To layer on the enticements, folks who open a new line of service get a $150 promotional card. US Cellular will also send a $150 promotional card in the mail to people who port a number and trade in their device. That amounts to $300 US cellular will pay you to become a subscriber.

While you're signing up for an account, you can add tablets to a Shared Connect plan for $5 a month. You can also add home phones for $10 or a router and home phone together for $15. These amount to 50 percent off the usual connection fees.

US Cellular is a regional carrier based in Chicago that relies on CDMA technology. Be sure to check the coverage map before making the switch.
