Peter Moorhead's Murder

Android Police coverage: Peter Moorhead's Murder Is A Cyberpunk Short Story Told As A Point-And-Click Adventure, Now In The Play Store For $1.49

Peter Moorhead's Murder (that's "Murder" by Peter Moorhead, it's not a game about killing a guy named Peter) is a point-and-click adventure game that mixes sensibilities from stories like Blade Runner and The Matrix with some stylish pixelated graphics. It's an interesting choice, especially since the game's dialog is fully voiced. This unique little game is just a buck and a half with no in-app purchases.

Murder is a short story about the intersection of morality and sentience, told in the form of a point and click adventure. Over its memorable twenty to thirty minute playtime, Murder takes players on a journey through a near-future Tokyo, following the actions of Lieutenant Motomeru Minori of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police on an unusual and dangerous case, in a story that explores the intersection of morality and sentience in a future where both have become commodities.

A Good Snowman

Android Police coverage: A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build But You Can Still Give It Your Best Shot

In A Good Snowman (Is Hard To Build), you play as an indistinct gumdrop monster who really wants to build a snowman. For some reason. The game is primarily a puzzler wherein you find snowman parts and assemble them, but there's also a bit of action-RPG exploration in the mix too. The graphics and music are charming, and the $5 game has no ads or in-app purchases.

A Good Snowman Is Hard To Build is an adorable puzzle game about being a monster and making snowmen.

  • Adorable graphics by Benjamin Davis (Sushi Snake).
  • Featuring a gorgeous original soundtrack by Ryan Roth (The Beginner's Guide, Starseed Pilgrim, The Yawhg).
  • Lovingly-crafted puzzle design from Alan Hazelden (Sokobond, These Robotic Hearts of Mine, Traal).
  • No in-app-purchases or ads.

Swing Copters 2

Android Police coverage: The Dev Behind Flappy Bird Releases Another Game That's Not Flappy Bird (It's Swing Copters 2)

To be perfectly honest, a game like Swing Copters probably wouldn't make it into this roundup if it wasn't developed by the same fellow who made Flappy Bird. But here we are, with a sequel to the quasi-sequel. The swinging, uneven, single-tap gameplay is more or less intact in this version, but there are more types of obstacles and even a tiny bit of story. How 'bout that.

Flying is now a serious business. Join us at Copters Inc. Guide your pilot to go through obstacles. Get as many points as you can and recruit more pilots to your team.

[HOW TO PLAY]

Android Police coverage: Zeptolab Goes Back To The Well With Cut The Rope: Magic, Now Available For Free In The Play Store

At this point there are so many versions of Cut The Rope that I honestly can't keep them straight in my head. Here's a hint: in this one the tiny green monster thing turns into other things. Zapping Om Nom with various spells will turn him into a bird, a fish, a lizard, and a few other creatures, each of which responds to the stage in different ways. Shadowgate

Android Police coverage: Classic Dungeon Crawler Shadowgate Gets A Gorgeous Remastered Release On Android

Old-school, dungeon-crawling RPGs don't get much more old-school than Shadowgate. While the original game featured rudimentary combat and puzzle-solving, it didn't even allow for direct character control. Oddly, that makes it ideal for a touchscreen revival. And how: the remastered version features some of the best 2D sprite-based graphics I've ever seen. The old-fashioned sensibilities of the game might now be for everyone, but it's worth checking out if you have fond memories of ancient PC games. A tablet is reccomended.

Shadowgate is one of the most well-known and beloved point-and-click adventure titles in gaming history. As one of the original titles in the popular MacVenture series that went on to be celebrated on the NES, GBC, and Nintendo 64, Shadowgate quickly endeared players with its fantastic atmospheric soundtrack, perilous locations to progress through, countless puzzles to solve, and more ways to gruesomely die than gamers previously thought possible.

Lost Horizon

Android Police coverage: 2010 Point-And-Click Adventure Game 'Lost Horizon' Is Now On Android For $4.99

Lost Horizon's Play Store description claims that it is a "point-and-click classic." The first part is certainly defensible - it's an adventure game in the old mold, albeit with absolutely gorgeous backgrounds and character animations, following an Indiana Jonesish 1930s pulp story. The claim to being a "classic" is a bit more problematic - the game originally came out in 2010. Let's give it a few more years before you claim to be a pillar of one of gaming's oldest genres, fellas. But in the meantime, pick it up for a very reasonable $5.

The year is 1936. After his dismissal from the British Air Force, Fenton Paddock struggles along as a smuggler and petty crook – until he receives the lucrative offer to trace an expedition that went missing in the highlands of Tibet. But Fenton and his ex-girlfriend Kim are not the only ones eager to find the missing researchers. The Nazis have sent a secret task force to Tibet as well and assigned them to get hold of the lost explorers, whose revolutionary findings bear the power to change the fate of the world forever.

Scribblenauts Unlimited

Android Police coverage: [N-E-W G-A-M-E] Maxwell Doodles A Copy Of Scribblenauts Unlimited In The Play Store, Will Turn It Into Something Real For $4.99 And The Occasional 99 Cent IAP

Scribblenauts is a fairly unique game that allows you to insert more or less anything into the stage just by typing it in. The player then uses said items to progress through levels riddled with physics puzzles. This sequel adds even more crazy contraptions to summon and build in a less structured way, plus new stages and costumes for Maxwell to wear. The game is reasonable at $5, but there are occasional in-app purchases - it is a Warner Bros. title, after all.

The award-winning, best-selling puzzle game franchise Scribblenauts is back. Imagine Anything. Explore Everything. Welcome to an adventure into a wide-open world, where the most powerful tool is still your imagination. Help Maxwell solve robust puzzles across dozens of seamless, free-roaming levels by summoning any object you can think of. Or you can apply adjectives to existing objects and magically transform their properties.

Lifeline: Silent Night

The Lifeline series has been popular for bringing story-driven RPG elements into a sort of augmented reality mobile format. The latest entry refocuses on the original protagonist, Taylor, as he makes his way through another suspenseful text-based storyline driven by the responses of the player. Like Lifeline 2, Silent Night includes support for notifications (which let you continue the story without opening the app) and responding via Android Wear.

Taylor is back in a suspenseful, new, real-time adventure for Android and Android Wear – Lifeline: Silent Night. Your choices shape the story as you play, and could mean life or death for one intrepid space explorer. The hearts and imaginations of countless players worldwide were captured when the original Lifeline took Android by storm and now Taylor needs your help again in Lifeline: Silent Night.

Maestria

Maestria is a puzzle game that tasks the player with ringing bells in the right order to clear the stage. The concept isn't all that deep, but the presentation is amazing: the isometric 3D stages mix the perspective of Monument Valley with a pastel color scheme and an impressively varied set of stages. And speaking of which, there are more than 160 of them for just $2 with no in-app purchases.

Maestria is a new kind of puzzle game in which you will help Fugue bring back Harmony in eight enchanting worlds. In order to win, you just need to ring the bells in the correct order. Easy enough... But will you find a solution to the 160 levels of the game?

Progressing through the game unlocks new powers in a Metroidvania-style, and there are no ads or in-app purchases.

Narborion Origins: Lord Malbor

Lord Malbor is a turn-based battle game that tries to emulate tabletop RPGs, in the style of the Narborian Saga games that the story is based on. You take on the mantle of the titular character (before he goes all Anakin Skywalker) as he and his young friends go dungeon diving underneath their boarding school. Players of tabletop and pen-and-paper RPGs should enjoy it. The game costs just a dollar.

Terrible things are about to happen in the Fangor Boarding School. Will you be able to turn the tide of history, or will you become Lord Malbor, dreaded master vampire and ally of Mordon, Lord of Darkness? Play as the young Lord Malbor and his two friends Shamos and Cormus. Join the Secret Society of Sorcerers' Siblings and uncover the mysteries of the dark powers. Enter the ever-changing crypt underneath the school and find out what's happening in the dark.

Fortress: Destroyer

Fortress: Destroyer is a top-down boat battle game with RPG-style progression. You'll steer and shoot across the water as you take down bigger and bigger opponents to build both your personal ship and your fleet into aquatic killing machines. The game includes both singleplayer and multiplayer modes, though you might want to avoid the latter if you're not interested in perusing the in-game store for IAP.

Build the biggest, most blisteringly powerful battleship fleet imaginable, then fight back against the tyrannical Blackwater navy in this innovative action-RPG from the makers of Bloons TD 5. Choose one of 3 ship classes, fill multiple gun slots with powerful weapons, and add Modules to get new abilities. Take your custom ship build into one of 15 missions, and unleash pure havoc as you target your weapons, ram enemies into gibs, and trigger ocean boiling special abilities.

Metro 2033: Wars

The Metro series of PC shooters is actually based on a series of Russian novels, which also provide the inspiration for this top-down tactical RPG. Fight through the post-apocalyptic world to best both human enemies and mutated critters, then take refuge in subway stations, the only part of the world that hasn't been destroyed. The game features a ton of different enemies and factions, plus a trading system and base-builder. Metro 2033: Wars is pricey at $8, but there are no in-app purchases.

It’s the year 2033 and the entirety of the world has been reduced to nuclear rubble. Humanity is nearing extinction and radiation is making even the most basic surface dwelling, uninhabitable. New life forms have arisen that are far better adapted to this new dark, damp and alien-like world. Bands of survivors live on without ever knowing the warmth of sunlight, and whether or not they are the last ones left on Earth. The Moscow Metro is the reluctant home for this new humanity and one you protect at all costs.

Breakneck

Breakneck is a high-end "endless runner" where you pilot a Wipeout-style hovercraft, avoid obstacles, boost to escape your enemies, and get as far as you can without dying. The graphics and sound are impressive (and it doesn't hurt that the game is compatible with Android TV), but the gameplay is a little simple - race, get upgrades, race, die, and repeat. Your progress is unfortunately limited by the freemium model.

Master your speeder and defeat your pursuers in high speed action across a world ravaged by an alien occupation. Fly at BREAKNECK speed as you pursue your mission and get as far as you can. The world is now occupied by invaders—and they are hunting you. Scramble through unfamiliar terrain, dodging obstacles and evading capture and destruction. Retrace and optimize your route to improve your distance. Test your limits and your control, and earn rewards for the risks you take.

Mechanic Escape

Mechanic Escape is a standard runner-platformer with some impressive visual design. While the gameplay is uncompromisingly two-dimensional, the look of the player character, monsters, stages, and bosses is unique and appealing. If you're a fan of the Rayman mobile games but prefer your heroes a little more pixelated, then this one's for you. The game is $2 with no in-app purchases.

In a world oppressed by ruthless machines, a stronghold full of die-hard TV-sets resists the persecution. Your lost friends and the lack of resources drive you to take action against the extinction. Brave the dangers and go find your comrades to rescue your species. Mechanic escape is a platform game full of infernal chases. In order to find his lost friends, Mech (the hero) doesn't hesitate to play the human cannonball, to pass throughout high-voltage areas or even dodge the most deadly machines.

Skilltree Saga

Skilltree Saga is a battle-focused RPG that takes more than a little inspiration from the RPG-books that Tin Man Games specializes in. The combat, wherein your hero faces off various human and monster opponents, is real-time. But the rest of the game progresses in a mostly text-based affair, with the big draw being the titular "skill tree" that forces players into specific specializations.

Skilltree Saga is the first casual RPG with Rogue-like Elements in Aventurien - the world of The Dark Eye. Choose your race as human, elf or dwarf and battle your random generated opponents in up to 100 deep stages with numerous skill, which you can advance and enhance. Baseball Riot

In regular baseball, hitting someone with a ball is generally frowned upon. In Baseball Riot it's the whole point. This physics puzzle game instructs players to hit the ball strategically and konk bad guys in the head, making use of parabolic arcs and various environmental variables to get the angles just right, plus power-ups to add a little variety. The game is free with 100 levels, and any $3 in-app purchase removes advertising to boot.

Baseball Riot is a fun physics based puzzle game packed with slapstick comedy and mayhem. Rust Bucket

Rust Bucket is a turn-based roguelike dungeon-crawler... that appears to star a disembodied head in a snazzy horned helmet. The top-down action should be familiar to anyone who's a fan of the genre, and some of the pixelated animations in this game are particularly appealing. Equal parts action and puzzle skills are needed to advance without dying. Rust Bucket is free with a single $3.66 in-app purchase to kill off advertising.

It's a fairly simple experience, but it takes some time to get the patterns and tactics down. Rusty Lake Hotel

Rusty Lake Hotel is a point-and-click adventure game with some unconventional sensibilities. The story is a classic whodunit that follows anthropomorphic animals, and the art style lends itself to an oddly childish sense of dread. $2 is all it takes to play through the first collection of stories, though more are coming soon according to the game's description. There are no in-app purchases at the moment.

Inky Blocks

Inky Blocks is a sort of radial take on Tetris. You place familiar-looking blocks in the circle that surrounds the play area, clearing away sections as you go. (Watch the video, it's hard to put into words.) The game is big on both difficulty and style, and power-ups can get you through the toughest parts of 20 levels. A single $1 in-app purchase unlocks the entire game.

SuperStreetViewer42

There are a lot of Cardboard-compatible games out there, but perhaps none so creative as SuperStreetViewer42. You play as a drunk superhero who doesn't know where he's teleported. You guess where you are by moving your head. The "stages" are made up of publicly-available images of famous locations, so a bit of history and art knowledge will help you last a little longer.

SuperStreetViewer42 is a cardboard VR app. You're a superhero. You're drunk and your teleporting powers are messed up, so each time you teleport you need to guess where you are. Do this by looking left and right and hitting the button for the option you think is correct.

Hammer Time!

I find this game's lack of parachute pants disturbing. The only objective it to bat away a bunch of rolling stones with your gigantic hammer, in a sort of quasi-croquet fashion, to keep them from destroying your castle. Collectibles include themed hammers (tomahawks, candy canes, Mjolnir, et cetera). Extra hammers can be won or purchased for a dollar each, and any purchase removes ads.

Look out, the castle is under attack. If only we'd built a giant hammer at the front gate. Oh wait, we did. It's HAMMER TIME. Your mission: fend off an onslaught of angry boulders with well-timed swings of your hammer. The longer you survive, the higher your score. It sounds simple, but when the action heats up and the boulders are rolling in thick and fast, one wrong swing of your hammer can mean the difference between glory and destruction.

A Snow Fort Too Far

This charming little indie game mixes some tower defense and real-time strategy elements for a war that Calvin & Hobbes could probably have dominated. The core concept is simple, building up and deploying snow-themed troops and defenses on a 2D plane. Surprisingly, A Snow Fort Too Far includes both single player and online two-player battles - rare for a Unity-based Android game. The game is free with only a few small in-app purchases to banish ads or add a second item slot.

Command an army of snowball wielding children in a battle of epic proportions to take over your neighborhood. Build and upgrade snow forts and snowmen to recruit more kids to your cause. Use your soldiers to defend your forts and to attack and take over the enemy bases. Capture all the forts and win the battle. Use the power of snow science to give your side the edge. Flash Freeze an enemy in place, call in a Saint Bernard to heal and thaw your soldiers with hot chocolate.

TR-REC GAME

TRI-REC is a simple rhythm game. Apparently it's based on a very specific type of recording equipment that I'm not cool enough to understand, but the gist is that if you can keep a beat, you should be able to play along to the EDM tunes without too much difficulty. The game is free with in-app purchases, but they only go up to $3.

Synchronizing to an array of dance music rhythms, enjoy the challenge of completing powerful dynamic beats using one of the most famous and unique composition tools of today’s dance music. Just complete a rhythm by following the "GUIDE" Watch your time, it’s the key to winning the game. Complete each rhythm within the target time. The faster you finish, the higher your score.

Stranded: A Mars Adventure

Stranded is a stranded standard endless runner with a sci-fi pixelated theme. The gameplay itself is familiar, bordering on obvious, but the levels demonstrate some creativity in both their presentation and structure. A $1 in-app purchase gets rid of advertising and unlocks a currency doubler, though more expensive options are in the store. Online multiplayer is available, but only in the form of ghost runs.

When his space ship crash-lands on the red planet, our little astronaut has to run, slide, jump and summersault every which way around Mars in search of much-needed oxygen bottles and the shattered components of his space craft. Using the new environment’s lack of gravity to his advantage, our jetpack-powered hero breaks his way through all kinds of stumbling blocks, hurdles and other obstacles to courageously keep his chance at making a return flight.

Porta-Pilots

Porta-Pilots is a kid's educational game that deals with time travel, in the tongue-in-cheek fashion of Mister Peabody and Sherman (though the mechanism is a toilet humor take on Doctor Who). The game comes from The "History" Channel, and ironically, it might actually have more historical content than the channel ostensibly aimed at adults. The game is basically a science fiction point-and-click adventure, but with the obvious time-hopping history driving the story.

What happens when you’re strolling along and a burping bird from the future poops on your head? Tyler Travers (and you.) are about to find out. Introducing Porta-Pilots™, an interactive storybook experience that takes kids on a time traveling adventure through history. Fly with the Wright Brothers. Be electrified by the wisdom of Edison and Tesla. Solve the puzzles of Egypt with Cleopatra. Join young Tyler Travers and his friends from the future in their ‘Portal Potty’ time machine for tales filled with fun missions, mysterious mini-games, and friendship.

Sky Hoppers

Sky Hoppers wears its Crossy Road inspiration in its sleeve, but it goes about the one-tap gameplay in a slightly different way. You'll have to follow a very specific path across the checkerboard field, which disappears after a few seconds. It's a bit like a real-time version of the old Simon Says game. The motivator is, naturally, coins to buy new themed characters in the familiar blocky style.

One path to glory. One chance to succeed. One man (or dodo, or robot, or giant piece of sushi; whatever floats your boat). Welcome to Sky Hoppers. The objective is simple: follow the highlighted path across the platform to safety. But when that path fades, and the platform starts to collapse beneath your feet, will you have what it takes to make it across? With over 50 characters to collect, a colorful retro style, and simple but devilishly addictive gameplay, Sky Hoppers will always keep you coming back for more.

CBS Sports Franchise Football

Manager titles seem to be most popular with the soccer crowd - American football fans would rather pretend to, you know, play football. But CBS seems to want to break into that lucrative market, albeit oddly without the official NFL license, so prospective football managers will be drafting real players from "Dallas" and "Seattle" instead of the Cowboys or the Seahawks. Odd that they chose to publish the game when the regular season is almost over...

Battle Bros

Battle Bros is, at least technically, a tower defense game. But it takes a somewhat unique approach: instead of an all-seeing RTS-style control scheme, you control one of the titular Bros at a time, laying down folksy towers and at times directly engaging the hordes of woodland critters. The game includes the usual upgrade and wave mechanics, but it also allows for an unconventional two-player co-op mode, something that's not often seen in tower defense. It's too bad the progression is spoiled by some pricey IAP.

Battle against hordes of minions in this action packed tower defense (TD) game with real-time multiplayer co-op gameplay. Fight alongside players worldwide or invite your friends and defend your land against hordes of minions controlled by the wicked Evil Corporation. In this never-ending, fast-paced survival game, progress through all 4 seasons of the year and discover new enemies and strategies.

Splasheep - Splash Sheep game

In Splasheep, you're tasked with returning color to a bleak and weary world... with a sheep cannon. You soak up the ungulates with paint, then fire them at buildings Angry Birds-style to give them a splash of pigment. Different breeds of sheep behave in different ways in the simple physics engine, and players will need to use their first-grade color theory skills to mix and match shades. Unfortunately it's a freemium game that uses a power system, limiting the possible fun.

Color has disappeared from all the world. There’s only one thing that can be done in this sheep game: throwing colored angry sheep to buildings to paint them. Color has disappeared mysteriously. The world is devoid of all emotion and now is lost in a silent chaos. The only hope is to restore all color. Grab your sheep, travel to distant islands and paint all the buildings the color they used to be. During your journey you might uncover the mystery behind the color disappearance.

Gods of Rome

Gods of Rome is an expensive 3D one-on-one fighting game that uses nice, cheap mythological figures for fighters. As with most popular mobile fighters, the controls are a mix of taps and swipes, plus super-moves that slowly charge up. The graphics and character designs are fantastic and online multiplayer is a core component, but this is a Gameloft title, so expect to be crushed in PvP by players who have shelled out cash to upgrade their fighters.

An epic fighting game set in an age of myth and legend that shows you exactly what your mobile device is capable of. The souls of the most powerful gods have been summoned to brutal battle. TMNT: Battle Match

The current animated run of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is pretty great, by all accounts - it certainly couldn't be worse than the latest movie. Even so, it's a bit disheartening to see a property that's so clearly fit for a fighting or action game relegated to the usual endless running and match three genres. Here's the second half of that equation, with Bejeweled gameplay on the bottom and 3D animated scenes (that you'd probably rather be playing) on the top. $1 plus IAP for a kids game - boo, Nickelodeon.

The Triceratons have destroyed present day Earth. Help the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles travel back in time, battle alien space creatures from beyond the known Universe and save Earth in this furiously-fast puzzle fighter game for Android phones and tablets. Use your finger to match 3 or more action icons that unleash devastating attacks on enemies. Connect shapes horizontally, vertically, or even on the diagonal. The more tiles you match, the more powerful your attack.

HoPiKo Free

We featured Hopiko back in September - it's a super-fast-paced platformer that will make your eyes run and your teeth grind. Now there's a free version to check out if $2 is too rich for your blood.

The evil Nanobyte virus is out, gaming is over... It’s time to hook up your power gloves and save your HoPiKo brothers. HoPiKo is an intense speed run platformer where you get to save gaming. Jump from platform to platform avoiding death, exploiting shortcuts and ripping through 100s of hand-crafted levels, each one dropped into a 5-stage mini run designed to break your mind.

Shine Runner Free

Shine Runner is a racing game from Vector Unit, which was (at least a while ago) well-regarded for making games with amazing graphics. Here's a free version if you'd rather not shell out $1 for the entry fee.

Throw your flat-bottomed fanboat into high gear and slip and slide through the muddy waters of the backwoods bayou. Smash and crash through a destructible world filled with rickety swamp shacks, fishin’ boats, chicken coops, gators, and more. Pack your cargo hold to the brim with moonshine, tobacky, snake oil and other contraband and then sell ‘em to the highest bidder in a rampagin’ 10-day race for profit and glory.

Dustoff Heli Rescue for Shield

The Dustoff series is all about shooting blocky bad guys from a helicopter. The previous entries were compatible with NVIDIA's various SHIELD devices, so it isn't clear why developers have mad a SHIELD-exlusive version of the game - it's not as if the graphics require particularly demanding hardware.

Enjoy the visually enhanced version of Dustoff Heli rescue that can be played only on NVIDIA SHIELD. "I need a Dustoff." became an all-too-familiar call on the airwaves of jungle wars. Now take off with your rescue helicopter and search and save the life of the wounded soldiers in the field, often under fire. If you can't, nobody else can. Find the stolen cargo with your Chinook helicopter and transport them safely to the nearby friendly base, all the while fighting off hostile tanks and other enemy combatants.

WWE 2K16 Creation Studio

This isn't a game, it allows you to put your face on a wrestler's body in 2K's WWE 2K16. There are a few adjustment tools, but all you really need is a front-facing camera and decent light. Oh, and a copy of the console game, of course.

The WWE 2K16 Creation Studio enables you to put your face in the game like never before. With the easy-to-use “face photo capture” feature, you can take a photo of your face, adjust your image as desired, and upload for use in the Xbox One™ or PlayStation®4 console version of WWE 2K16. Your image will appear in the WWE Community Creations menu, where you will be able to download it and seamlessly blend it onto the head of any Custom Superstar or Diva.
