In Between

Android Police coverage: Gravity-Defying Puzzle Game 'In Between' Has Fantastic Hand-Drawn Art And Animation

In Between is an indie platformer-puzzler, so it's in good company, especially if you look beyond Android. That isn't to say you shouldn't check it out, though: its gravity-flipping mechanic goes both up and down and left to right, an interesting expansion on the trick. The graphics and sound are of particular note, since they're both made by hand and of exceptional quality. There are no blocky pixelated characters here, and there's a surprisingly deep story to follow.

Shooty Skies - Arcade Flyer

Android Police coverage: Crossy Road Developers Release 'Shooty Skies,' A Casual Free-To-Play Take On Shoot-Em-Ups

Shooty Skies comes from the developers of Crossy Road, and it's easy to tell. It takes the simple structure and graphics of the previous game and applies them to the top-down shoot-em-up genre. As in Crossy Road you can buy new characters randomly with in-game coins or spend a dollar to unlock specific characters.

The creators of Crossy Road present Shooty Skies. Dodge, duck, goose and weave. Take to the skies. Take on a flood of colourful craziness filling the sky. Soar like an eagle, fight like a fancy octopus, shoot like the dickens.

Octodad: Dadliest Catch

Android Police coverage: Octodad: Dadliest Catch Is An Absurd Physics Game Starring A Perfectly Ordinary Human

Octodad is just a normal guy trying to do completely normal things, like buy groceries or cook burgers. The fact that his limbs seem more like tentacles, and flop around like they're being controlled by a drunk guy on an arcade crane machine, are hardly worth mentioning. In this Steam port you control completely normal Octodad as he flops and slides through various levels, trying very hard not to reveal his secret identity to please his loving wife and children.

Octodad: Dadliest Catch is a game about destruction, deception, and fatherhood. The player controls Octodad, a dapper octopus masquerading as a human, as he goes about his life. Octodad's existence is a constant struggle, as he must master mundane tasks with his unwieldy boneless tentacles while simultaneously keeping his cephalopodan nature a secret from his human family. Samsung Galaxy S4 or higher is required for best performance, although game may run acceptably with older devices. 1GB RAM or higher required. Android TV devices require a gamepad to play.

Dead Effect 2

Android Police coverage: Dead Effect 2 Lets You Chop Up Space Zombies With A Space Katana (In Space)

There's a surprisingly wide selection of high-end shooters available for Android, so long as you're willing to overlook the free-to-play model. Dead Effect 2 treads a bit of beaten ground with the zombie enemies, but the story sets everything on a huge spaceship, a la Dead Space, which is a bit more novel. There's also an impressive selection of weapons and enemies, and the story is split among three main characters. It's compatible with Android TV and external controllers as well.

Looking to push the boundaries of mobile gaming to another level, Dead Effect 2 is a console-quality action sci-fi shooter with RPG elements. Follow the enticing storyline, train and develop your character, collect and upgrade weapons, gear and high-tech body implants. Dead Effect 2 placed 2nd at the Very Big Indie Pitch contest at PG Connects Helsinki 2015.

• breathtaking graphics using the latest Android & NVIDIA technology

• realistic ragdoll effects and stunning environments

• narrated by professional voice actors

• atmospheric soundtrack and movie-quality sound effects

Sanitarium

Android Police coverage: DotEmu's Android Port Of Point-And-Click Horror Classic Sanitarium Arrives Just In Time For Halloween

Sanitarium is considered a minor classic among the admittedly limited realm of point-and-click horror titles. Now the masters of mobile ports at DotEmu have gotten their hands on it, and the Android version is definitely worth a look if you're an old fan or looking for something new. Remastered 2D graphics, a switch for hints, both standard touch and mouse pointer modes, and voice and text in English, French, and German round out a long list of features.

In Sanitarium you play an amnesiac thrust into a morbid, really creepy universe. After a car accident you wake up to find that instead of lying in a hospital, you’re in an asylum with your head wrapped in bandages. Who the hell am I? What am I doing here? How do I escape? There endless questions eating away at you, and so too are the many puzzles you’ll need to resolve throughout this immersive, captivating adventure.

Tomb Raider II

Android Police coverage: Square Enix Releases Tomb Raider II Like It's 1997, Only This Time The Game Only Costs 99 Cents

If all the latest high-end console games are getting you down, what with their 20GB installs and day one DLC and online multiplayer, Square Enix invites you to go back to a simpler time. When levels were short and shorts were shorter, when you could count the polygons on one hand, when Lara Croft was still a world-striding badass instead of a scared college student. This mobile version of Tomb Raider 2 comes with a bunch of achievements, the Golden Mask expansion pack, and new vehicles... and it's only a buck with no in-app purchases. Nice.

The multi award winning classic action adventure game from the glorious days of the 90s is back again in Tomb Raider II for Android users this year. The unstoppable Lara Croft is back in Tomb Raider II. Join Lara in her quest for the Dagger of Xian, reputed to possess the power of the dragon. But beware, Lara is not the only one in search of the dagger. Warrior Monks and crazed cult members plot against you as you travel from the remote mountain peaks of Tibet, the canals of Venice and to the bottom of the sea.

MONOPOLY HERE & NOW Big Screen

Android Police coverage: Hasbro Releases Chromecast Editions Of Monopoly And Yahtzee For Up To Four Players

Monopoly is such a natural and, by now, well-known game that it always feels a bit awkward in digital form. And since you don't get the perverse pleasure of screwing over your friends and sending them to the poorhouse with a single-player game, it's something of a hollow experience. So marrying Monopoly to the Chromecast, where its multiplayer can shine through by using the big screen for the board and phones for player controls, makes perfect sense. You'll have to pay $6 to unlock the full version, which seems reasonable.

Ever have a tough time deciding who’s going to be the banker? If you need an innovative, new way to play your favorite board games, then you’re going to love this. The NEW MONOPOLY HERE & NOW: Big Screen Edition app takes the board game outside the box. Download the game app and watch as the animated, 3D board and game pieces come to life as you play your way around the world. Gather your family or friends and get ready for this globetrotting spin on a classic board game

YAHTZEE Blitz Big Screen

Android Police coverage: Hasbro Releases Chromecast Editions Of Monopoly And Yahtzee For Up To Four Players

Here's another Chromecast-enabled multiplayer game, this time in Yahtzee flavor. Confession: I've never actually played Yahtzee. I have no idea how it goes. There's a cup and some dice and that's about it. So... yeah. The full version costs $6.

Roll out the Chromecast and get ready to out count, out score and out fun your family – YAHTZEE Blitz: Big Screen Edition app has arrived on your TV screen. Play the new Blitz Mode, which gives the roller and other players special powers to do things like freeze an opponent’s die. Then you can roll out the dice and rack up the points – it’s time for the fun to begin and bragging to follow. Download the YAHTZEE Blitz: Big Screen Edition app today and try it for free. Pay once to unlock unlimited play.

Beneath The Lighthouse

In Beneath The Lighthouse, you guide a tiny sailor with a giant head through a series of radial puzzles. It's sort of like a digital version of those old marble maze games: you don't control the player-character directly, instead rolling the stage left or right to let his noggin fall down various paths and through traps. The visual style is unique, and a single $5 in-app purchase removes the advertising and the lives system.

"I stare at the horizon every night before I sleep hoping to catch a glimpse of the lighthouse. The light reminds me of Grandpa and my summer visits playing on the cliffs. That warm life saving beacon not only saves ships, it keeps me safe too. Grandpa’s there just across the water watching over me. But the lighthouse hasn't shone now for days and the fog is thick. What's happened? It's time to visit Grandpa."

Slashy Hero

Don't let the name fool you, Slash Hero isn't yet another take on Flappy Bird. Instead it's an isometric hack-and-slash game where your movement is determined by drawing and releasing a line instead of tapping on buttons. It's a unique approach to the dungeon crawler setting that works with a touchscreen rather than against it. The game includes 48 levels and a considerable amount of IAP.

Hack and slash monsters in a spooky mansion. Slashy Hero must save Halloween by defeating spooky ghosts, possessed tombstones, and evil jack o’lanterns. Play through 48 action packed dungeons with unique enemy types and crushing bosses. Dash across the screen with a unique drawing movement mechanic, attacking as you go. Checkpoints every three levels let you save your progress and advance through the mansion.

Zombocalypse

Zombocalypse, while somewhat lacking in originality, has the same level of respectable polish that you're probably used to from other Adult Swim games. It's a side-scrolling survival game where you can walk left or right to shoot, slash, dismember, or otherwise dispatch zombies. Like I said, not a new idea, but the painted 2D graphics and the somewhat over-the-top gore are entertaining. There are ads and IAP, but not to an unreasonable degree.

Shoot zombies. With guns. On your phone. It's a bold, new idea that's just crazy enough to work. Gear up, ship out and take on a never-ending parade of walking corpses. Use guns, use knives— heck, we'll even throw in some explosives. It's too late to save the world, but it's not too late to have some fun, right?

  • Mow down zombies of all shapes and sizes
  • Explore the world of the zombie apocalypse
  • Unlock an arsenal of rifles, shotguns, explosives, machetes, air strikes and more
  • Climb online leaderboards
  • You get to shoot zombies. WITH GUNS.

Devious Dungeon 2

The sequel to Noodlecake's dungeon crawler includes more randomized levels, more bosses, more loot, and more moreness. Tight controls and simple graphics keep the focus on the platforming action, though there aren't a whole lot of new ideas on display. The standard warrior, mage, and archer classes are available to suit your playing style. Though the game is $2, it also includes some hefty in-app purchases, which is a bit of a downer.

It is said that great adventures await behind the walls of this dark castle. The castles ever shifting halls are filled with deadly monsters. Treacherous traps have claimed the lives of many adventurers. It is rumoured the castle contains treasures beyond imagination. However, it is also the domain of the summoner and he does not look kindly upon uninvited guests. Can you defeat the summoner and claim the lost treasures of the castle?

The Walking Dead No Man's Land

This is the third or fourth game I've seen based on AMC's Walking Dead TV show, and it's the first that's actually interested me. While the overworld includes a rather tired base-builder mechanic (no doubt intended to point players towards all that IAP), the main section is turn-based tactical affair, where you guide the crossbow-slinging Daryl and his teammates through hoards of undead. Graphics and presentation are impressive, and there are plenty of locations and Easter eggs that should please fans of the show.

Stay human and survive in the official mobile game of AMC’s The Walking Dead. Join Daryl Dixon in the fight against the flesh-hungry walkers. Do you have what it takes to stay alive? The Walking Dead: No Man’s Land is a thrilling, action-packed RPG game where tactical choices make a difference between life and death. The one and only, Daryl Dixon, will teach you how to kill and survive - but remember, in the end you are on your own.

Tengami

This iOS pilgrim is technically a point-and-click adventure game, but that description sells it short. The graphics make it look like an elaborate pop-up book with some sumi-e inspirations. There aren't any enemies to fight or feats to accomplish, just lots of exploration and some low-key puzzles. It's a crying shame that the developers didn't include a video on the Play Store to demonstrate the game in motion, so check it out on YouTube. There are no ads or in-app purchases.

Tengami is an atmospheric adventure game set inside a Japanese pop-up book. Fold and slide the beautifully crafted paper world to solve puzzles and discover secrets. Award Nominations: SXSW, IndieCade, SOWN, Develop Showcase Tengami is a complete game with no In-App Purchases and no in-game advertisements. Go on a serene journey through Japan of ancient fairy tales brought to life through striking visuals, unique gameplay and haunting music.

Morningstar: Descent Deadrock

Morningstar is a science fiction point-and-click adventure game in which you're stranded on an abandoned planet and must use the resources of a former camp to survive. The game has a serious Alien vibe (lots of horror elements), and while the graphics aren't particularly complex, they're effective at evoking a desolate and lonely atmosphere, and the game includes full voice acting. Morningstar is $4 with no in-app purchases, so check it out if you're looking for an adventure game with something a little different.

Crash-landed on a desolate, alien planet, what should've been a routine work-for-hire job for Powell has become a deadly mission to save the merchant vessel Morningstar and her crew. With one man dead and the captain gravely injured, Powell is on his own to repair the ship and find a way to escape the strange gravity well of the empty planet they've landed on.And if the situation weren't dire enough, the only signs of life on the planet are the remains of a much larger and better equipped ship and her crew, all dead, and not by natural means.

1 Volt

In 1 Volt, you play an anthropomorphic battery. Well, anthropomorphic in the sense that you have eyes - you're unfortunately lacking in the limb department. You'll have to use electrical charges (read: tethers) to swing and flop through the silhouette stages. The game's neon-soaked graphics are vibrant and interesting, and you'll need a good grip on the physics engine to solve the puzzles and progress through 40 stages.

You were on the way to a recycling process when fortunately for you - but not for the environment - you accidentally ran off. Now your goal is to escape from the facility, which is an extremely difficult task due to the fact that you are a battery without legs. Equipped with a limited number of electric beams, you can connect to walls, move or destroy objects, turn switches, and charge generators. You also have the ability to jump or push off the walls - the rest is up to physics and gravity.

Evel Knievel

Evel Knievel fans probably weren't clamoring for a casual game following the exploits of their favorite stuntman, but now they have one. It's a mix of driving and physics-based platforming in the vein of Trials, but surprisingly, the game does without in-app purchases - $2 gets you everything. There are lots of outfits and helmets to unlock if you're a true connoisseur of Knievel's bombastic style.

Now it’s your chance to step into the shoes of the legendary daredevil hero with the Official Evel Knievel game. Relive his spectacular career, starting with a humble 250cc Scrambler jumping Rattlesnakes and Lions, working your way up to insane jumps like 13 London Buses and the Las Vegas Casino Fountain on the 750cc Ultimate. Have fun doing wheelies, flips, loops and many other stunts. Negotiate flaming hoops, springboards, cranes and many other exciting obstacles.

Zero Reflex

In this "evader" game you're tasked with moving around a set circle and surviving... the Eye of Sauron. Okay, so maybe it doesn't have the official Tolkien license, but that's definitely the inspiration. The simple graphics and linear movement are an interesting combination, and according to the description, the game includes a contest to win 10,000 real-world dollars. Even so, in-app purchases are limited to a single dollar to get rid of ads.

Zero Reflex is a psychedelic evader. Circles, bullets, shurikens, rockets, saws and time ... they're all after you. Zero Reflex is a psychedelic evader which tests both your dexterity and your nerves in a fast-paced punishing environment that keeps pushing your limits. Zero Reflex puts 60 challenges in front of you. You have no save points and no excuses. Be faster than a blink of the Eye.

Neko Atsume: Kitty Collector

For fans of cats presented in the Japanese style, Neko Atsume is an interesting proposition. It's basically just a sandbox (no pun intended) where you put out toys, food, and other distractions for digital cats. Then you take photos of them. I'll admit that I don't see the appeal, but then I'm not a cat person anyway. The simple hand-drawn graphics are nice, and the in-app purchases are fairly minimal.

Playing Neko Atsume: Kitty Collector is as easy as one, two...and that's it. Step 1: Place playthings and snacks in your yard. Step 2: Wait for cats to visit. Attract cats with food and then watch them romp with your toys. More than 40 varieties of cats—white and black, tabby and calico—might stop by. Rare cats are rumored to roam the neighborhood too, but you'll need particular items to entice those elusive felines. Each visitor is logged in your Catbook. Become a master kitty collector and fill it up.

Hopeless 2: Cave Escape

The original Hopeless was an alternately cute and horrifying twitch game. There have been several remixes of that core formula, but the official sequel mixes things up with an endless runner setup. It's still cute, but I can't help but feel that the series has lost its way. The directional component of the first game was unique, but this one is little more than on-rails shooting, which isn't all that interesting on a touchscreen. It's also greatly boosted the in-app purchases.

The blobs are back. Do you have what it takes? Our cute hopeless blobs must escape the limbo dark cave using their fast minecart. Challenge your skills as you join the ride, shooting monsters and saving blobs along the way. Enjoy dynamic movements, full-range shooting, and thrilling, fast-paced action in this sequel to the highly popular Hopeless: The Dark Cave. Test your reflexes with multiple levels and a variety of weapons to beat the scary monsters in this cute and funny horror game.

Super Helmets On Fire DX

Super Helmets On Fire DX is a runner-platformer that doesn't take itself too seriously. That's a good thing, since if it did, the devs would probably be sued for tongue-in-cheek copyright infringement. Levels are basic, just jump around and try to avoid and/or destroy enemies. It's simple enough and only costs a couple of bucks, and at the moment there are no in-app purchases.

Super Helmets On Fire DX Ultra Edition Plus from Ripper Games is an epic adventure that will take your breath away. And probably your helmet if you're wearing one. Play as The Hero, a regular construction worker that one day by mistake unleashes the wrath of an ancient egyptian God. Including more than 10 playable characters and 4 Incredible and addictive game modes featuring a Unique RPG stat based system for your characters that will allow you to customize them more than in any other Arcade Runner.

Rugby Hero

I know next to nothing about rugby, aside from the fact that it's kinda sorta not quite entirely like football (the American version). But since Rugby Hero is a pixelated casual game, you probably don't need to know the ins and outs of the actual sport. It includes "real" famous teams and players from rugby history and presents the game in a sort of exaggerated Punch-Out style. The game has in-app purchases, though they top out at around $3.

Kickoff the Rugby World Cup 2015 with infinite ‘TRY’ scoring fun and win Glory with your favorite team. Be the famous player of your heroic team and have fun running past defenders this Rugby season. Show off your skills by running hard to fend off endless tackles and Score the highest to celebrate victories. Unlock and Play for your favorite team. Score most tries and beat try scoring records to top the Global Leaderboard.

Super Boys - The Big Fight

Super Boys is an indie game that takes more than a little inspiration from arena fighters like Super Smash Bros. This one includes an impressive selection of whimsical characters and online cross-platform battles with up to 8 players (make sure you've got a decent connection). However, it's a bit disheartening that a game that attempts to indulge in such a "hardcore" style of fighting relies so heavily on IAP.

The year is 2019 and everyone's bored of TV, celebrities and games. Everything is inflated. S U P E R B O Y S - The Big Fight, is an ultra violent TV show where fighters from across the globe form teams that clobber each other to win money, toasters and blu-ray players. The overpowered Heroes and Bosses of old games are being crushed and have to team up to survive the onslaught against an enemy they cannot defeat, the new Super Boys.

Fallout Pip-Boy

Android Police coverage: Bethesda Releases The Pip-Boy Fallout 4 Companion App For Android

This game is intended to be played inside the plastic Pip-Boy (a sort of retro-futuristic smartwatch) that comes with special editions of Fallout 4. You can play it without the Pip-Boy shell, but it kind of robs you of the experience. The point is to use your Pip-Boy as the one for your character in the full game, which is a pretty awesome idea. Without the extra toy you can still use it to check out some of Fallout 4's features and play mini-games.

From Vault-Tec and RobCo Industries comes the Pip-Boy: America’s finest, easiest-to-use personal information processor. This app lets your portable device interact with Fallout 4 on your Xbox One, PlayStation 4 or PC. Away from your game system? No problem. Pip-Boy will remember your status and allow you to access your data while on the go. Improve your life by integrating completely with Fallout 4. Check your Stats, Inventory, Map, Radio and even play your holotape games all from the convenience of your Pip-Boy application.

ZENONIA S: Rifts In Time

Gamevil is back for another round of its signature action-RPG game, Zenonia. This one is specifically focused on multiplayer co-op to get through dungeons. The series' signature anime-style 2D graphics are on display, and they're quite good, though they seem to be much more geared towards the "superdeformed" style in this entry. As with all Gamevil games, you'll eventually hit a grind wall unless you start paying for this "free" title.

The world’s most popular mobile RPG, ZENONIA®, is now online. Travel across nine treacherous realms to uncover the mystery behind the portal. Assist the Celestial Kingdom and expose the horrifying truth. Chat and play with your friends in real-time. Join a co-op raid party and fend off vicious monsters in Raid mode. Enter PVP matchups to destroy your competition.

Codex The Warrior (Shield Ver)

Codex The Warrior is a tap-and-drag fighter in the style of Infinity Warrior. The graphics and art are impressive (if somewhat limited to a Conan the Barbarian aesthetic), and they should be, since this particular version is restricted to SHIELD devices. Play Store reviews say that the game has some serious crashing problems and other issues, and the $100 in-app purchases surely don't help.

Codex The Warrior is the ultimate Action/Role-playing game for the NVIDIA SHIELD. Fight gruesome enemies 1v1 as you advance through levels of a treacherous dungeon. Discover weapons of immense power to aide you on your quest. Craft your weapons and armor to make them even more powerful. Learn incredible skills to upgrade and use in combat. Codex delivers stunning visuals and responsive combat that pushes the impressive graphical capabilities of the NVIDIA SHIELD to immerse you in a deep fantasy world.

VR Poltergeist Manor Cardboard

VR Poltergeist Manor Cardboard is a VR game that's about ghosts. It's intended to be creepy. That's about all you can say, though the developers are quick to note (in between a metric ton of SEO tags) that the game doesn't actually contain any gore or blood, and no ads or in-app purchases either, making it somewhat kid-friendly.

On the night known to many as Halloween, Samhaine, Hallowmass, or all Hallows eve, you enter a virtual reality house haunted by a dangerous ghost. Let your fear flow as you venture through the scary manor. See the ghost manipulate the mansion to scare you on this rollercoaster of fright. View the horror on Mattel View-Master, Google Cardboard, and Merge VR. Haunt your Halloween.

Sinister Edge

Here's another "creepy" VR game - if it seems like we're late with these, sorry, our roundup schedule didn't line up with Halloween. This one includes a few more puzzle elements, and it's playable with or without a set of VR glasses.

On your desperate search for your family, Sinister Edge leads you to the edge of horror and despair. Immerse yourself in a mind-blowing experience of unadulterated terror you will never be able to forget. By combining heart-stopping horror with the complex mechanics of an adventure game, Sinister Edge offers you an unparalleled experience. Solve entertaining puzzles, discover atmospheric locations and escape from the evil lurking in the shadows, but never forget, you are not alone…

Frederic Resurrection of Music

Unique anime-style rhythm game Frederic: Resurrection of Music and its sequel (below) were both published on the Play Store in 2013 and 2014, respectively. Both listings are now gone, for some reason, but the games have been re-published under new listings. We don't know why.

Go on an unforgettable journey around the world with the world's greatest composer, Frederic Chopin. He gets brought back to life, into the world full of commercialized soulless music. Saddened by this state of affairs he chooses to once again prove that he is the best, and that music can be something more than same-sounding radio hits. It can spread joy, induce passion and bring love.

Frederic - Evil Strikes Back

Defeat famous opponents in musical duels. Immense yourself in fantastic story of Frederic's endeavors. Catch all the Easter Eggs and subtle parodies hidden in the background. Practice your skills until perfection and become the Master of the Piano. The world of music is once again threatened. Millie

Here's another game that's disappeared from the Play Store, only to be re-uploaded again to a different listing. (What gives, Forever? All three of these games were published under your developer account.)

A joyful, casual puzzle game that will tease both your wits and your memory. You've always dreamt of flying. Roaming high in the clouds, free from all worries. Just gliding through air like a bird.
