Android Police coverage: Cosmic Watch Is A Beautiful Model Of The Universe For Your Phone Or Tablet
Cosmic Watch is... well, it's a watch, I suppose. But it's so much more than that: on top of being a 3D orrery and world clock, it's also an eclipse timer, a star map for constellations, and an astral chart. The app is expensive for what's basically a scientific and visual novelty (and I wish it came with a battery-destroying live wallpaper), but it's one of the most unique things on the Play Store at the moment, and definitely worth checking out.
Discover the fascinating relation between time and the cosmos. Enjoy this interactive learning tool and understand the concept of the celestial sphere and the apparent movement of the sky. COSMIC WATCH is the worlds first and most advanced interactive 3D astronomical time device in the digital age.
- Realtime world clock: Know the local time anywhere on Earth with just one touch.
- Time travel: Explore any planetary positions in the past, present and future. Determine the exact time of sunrise or sunset with the horizon.
- Navigation: Align the Cosmic Watch with the cardinal points and experience your realtime position in the cosmos. Find the planets in the sky.
- Orientation: With the equatorial coordinates you can adjust your telescope.
- Digital orrery: Discover the solar system from a geocentric point of view.
- Interactive astral chart: To find out your ascendant and planets in retrograde has never been easier and more beautiful.
- Solar eclipse detector: Be aware when this epic moments will happen.
Android Police coverage: Khan Academy's Android App Is Out Of Beta And Available To Everyone
Khan Academy is an admirable collection of free college-style courses on a variety of technical topics. The best part: it's free. While you can't actually use most of this stuff towards a degree (you have to pay for that paper, of course), it's still an incredible wealth of information. The Android app lets you access all of Khan's online courses and materials in an impressively well-organized way on your phone or tablet. Hit the books, kid.
Khan Academy is now on Android.
- You can learn anything — for free: Over 10,000 videos and explanations at your fingertips in math, science, economics, history, and much, much more
- Quickly find what you need: Redesigned navigation and search make it faster to find what you want
- Keep learning even when you’re offline: Bookmark your favorite content to “Your List” (phone only) for easy access, and download it to keep learning even when you’re not connected to the internet.
- Pick up where you left off: Your learning syncs between your Android and khanacademy.org, so your progress is always up-to-date
We've seen this sort of thing before: use a combination server and receiver app on multiple Android devices, ideally connected to some speakers scattered throughout your house, and roll your own Sonos-style multi-room audio system. AmpMe distinguishes itself with a competent user interface, iOS cross-compatibility, and an easy setup, plus a "party code" that lets guests easily jump onto your network of phones and speakers. Neat.
Surround yourself with sound. AmpMe creates a giant, multi-speaker setup using just the phone in your pocket. Play your music in perfect sync across multiple devices to create one powerful sound system. Bring the party anywhere. Be the speakers.
- Put AmpMe on your phone and on as many of your friends' devices as you want, then sync and you're ready to party
- Host your own party or join a friend's
- The host can search for their favorite songs, artists, albums, or playlists
- Once the host hits "Play", friends join by entering the party code
- Syncing starts automatically and, in seconds, your friends become speakers
- Compatible with smartphones & tablets (Android and iOS) and bluetooth speakers (with a microphone, e.g. Jambox, etc.)
Showtime is following in the footsteps of HBO, reaching out to cable-cutters with an $11 online-only monthly service. So naturally they've made a streaming app for users, and it's also available for Android TV and Chromecast. The app includes access to all of Showtime's original series (including new episodes after they air) and the movies that are currently active on the service.
A new way to get SHOWTIME® is here, and you can try it FREE for 30 days. Simply download the SHOWTIME app and sign up. Watch what’s airing live on SHOWTIME or get unlimited on-demand access to every season of award-winning SHOWTIME Original Series like Homeland, Shameless and Ray Donovan, star-studded hit movies, groundbreaking documentaries, hilarious comedy specials and action-packed sports including championship boxing events.
Cloud tools are all well and good, but sometimes you want to keep all of your private files, well, private. DAEMON Sync lets you do just that, backing up photos and videos on your phone to a PC on your local network (after you install the server, of course) then making regular backups. You can also share and sync the files with other Android or iOS devices - very handy if you want to keep a consistent local database without sending anything over the Internet.
Introducing the first truly private cloud solution. Backup, sync, share and browse your photos or videos within the local wireless network. No internet access required. You don’t need to register anywhere, don’t need to enter your email or create login and password. Share your media files between Android and iOS devices, automatically sync with server in background, when you are connected the same Wi-Fi network.
Android Police coverage: You'll Never Believe What Buzzfeed Just Published In The Play Store (It's A News App)
Buzzfeed publishes news. I know, it's kind of shocking. It's actually pretty decent, as news sites go - or at least, much more decent than you might expect from the Internet's content cesspool. This app lets you browse and read the various news sections and articles on Buzzfeed, with a surprising lack of lists about Disney princesses. A custom category page and notifications for breaking news are included.
We make the news easy to follow. With the BuzzFeed News app, you’ll quickly catch up on what’s going on around the world. We make the news easy to access. Whether it’s a tweet or a video, a BuzzFeed News exclusive or a compelling piece of reporting from elsewhere, our editors will make sure you don’t miss out on what people are talking about. We make the news easy to understand. Our editors know that when something happens, the who, why, when, and how matter just as much as the what.
Android Police coverage: Adidas Snapshot App Can Tell How Hard And Fast You Kick A Soccer Ball Using Your Android Camera
Have you ever wanted to get some hard physics facts on your soccer kick? A new app from Adidas will allow you to do just that. Take a video of your kick and this app will analyze the motion of the ball, telling you how fast you can nail it. Of course this being an app from a sports apparel brand, it also includes a lot of social hooks for sharing the videos to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Time to discover how well you can strike a soccer ball and share it with the world - adidas SnapShot is the world’s first soccer tracking software on your smartphone. Record your shots with friends and discover the speed, angle and distance of your strikes. You can even apply stunning visual effects and share your videos via Facebook, Twitter & Instagram.
InstantReplay Sideline Video
Android Police coverage: TechSmith Releases InstantReplay App For Football Coaches, Teams, Broadcasters, And Other Experts
I don't know many high school or college football coaches read Android Police, but for however many do, this app is just for you. InstantReplay allows you to record your players in games or practices and replay them (instantly, of course). It also combines statistical systems that allow you to categorize clips by down, play style, and a ton of other filters. Clips can be shared between networks of devices via Wi-Fi. The features are incredibly deep, much deeper than we can cover here, which is probably why the app costs an incredible $500. A year.
It's all about winning. Give your team the in-game intelligence edge it needs to crush the competition. InstantReplay lets you record from the pressbox, or any other spot, and immediately watch video of previous plays on the sideline. InstantReplay has powerful tendency filters that help you diagnose your opponent's behavior and make calls that exploit their weaknesses. No computer, capture card or Internet required. InstantReplay is a pure mobile, device to device, in-game video replay solution that works with the smartphones and tablets you carry with you every day.
Recent News isn't the only news app we've seen that attempts to break current events down into bite-sized chunks, but it looks like the most user-friendly. Topics are broken down into the usual world/national/local/sports/et cetera categories, plus more granular topics and custom tabs. It also includes a flexible UI that works well on phones and tablets in landscape or portrait mode, and the app syncs between multiple devices.
Recent is a smart news app that provides your news, customized, now. It's powered by artificial intelligence that learns your interests, suggests relevant articles, and proposes topics you might like to follow. It's a faster and better way to stay informed about subjects you love.
• One-minute news summary with very quick load time
• Hot News, Local News, and personalized recommendations tabs
• Thousands of topics
• Works on phones and tablets in landscape and portrait orientations
• Instantly share news on Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks
ClickMe - Reminder in a click
ClickMe is an app that automatically appears after each time you hang up on a phone call. It allows you to set an automatic reminder for increments of time from 10 minutes up to 24 hours - perfect for when you're busy and need to call someone back, but inevitably forget. More advanced functions let you set a manual reminder or voice note, or set one after taking a screenshot, or share reminders with contacts.
Our users already have enough on their minds. Writing todo lists takes too long and updating them every time something comes up isn't always realistic. ClickMe enables you to capture any reminder in a matter of seconds. Click#1: Capture the content. Click#2: Select a time frame. It's that simple. Whether it's a contact you need to get back to, a screenshot of that important e-mail from your boss that you must reply to, or a voice note for when you're on your way to work.
Adobe Digital Editions
Adobe's Digital Editions system has been around for a while. It's a custom DRM package, mostly used for textbooks and reference materials, but a few fiction novels as well. The app is designed to access your Adobe account in the cloud and open those DRM-protected files, but it can also borrow books from some libraries and read EPUB and PDF files.
One eBook reader for all your Adobe DRM protected books across your Android Devices, iPad, Mac or PC. Adobe Digital Edition (ADE) is free-to-download and use, and completely ad-free. Use it to read EPUB and PDF books, both online and offline. Borrow ebooks from many public libraries for use with ADE. Extend your reading experience by transferring books from your personal computer to your Android devices. Organize your books into a beautiful custom library.
Manufacturer And Tie-In Apps
Android Police coverage: Asus Releases A Custom Watch Face Designer App For Its ZenWatch Devices
Asus has already released a ton of watch faces for its ZenWatch Android Wear devices, but apparently that wasn't enough. This app lets you create one for yourself, using either a handful of backgrounds, ticker styles, hands, and widgets, or importing art assets to roll your own. It's a surprisingly versatile tool, but sadly, it's only compatible with the ZenWatch and ZenWatch 2.
Want to show off your one-of-a-kind watch face? ZenWatch FaceDesigner is an ASUS wearable application that's fully-compatible with Android Wear. It lets you create exclusive watch faces for your ZenWatch in three easy steps:
1. Choose your watch face.
2. Choose your clock type.
3. Finish it up by choosing your information widget.
Creating your own watch face has never been this incredibly fast and amazing.
Frontline: Ebola Outbreak
This collection of VR videos and 3D extras is a documentary on the Ebola virus outbreak in Africa last year. It's a grisly subject, but the painstaking documentation should be an interesting experience for anyone who wants to study the sociological effects of a devastating disease. You'll need a Google Cardboard headset to use the app.
This virtual reality documentary, from FRONTLINE filmmaker Dan Edge, traces the spread of the Ebola virus during the most far-reaching outbreak in history. The experience begins in Meliandou Village, Guinea, at the tree where villagers believe the outbreak may have begun. As the virus spreads, viewers are transported to Sierra Leone, where a beloved healer’s funeral sets off a chain reaction of infections. Finally, viewers visit an emergency Ebola treatment center in the Liberian capital of Monrovia, as the outbreak spirals out of control.
Android Police coverage: Microsoft Releases Android Version Of Outlook Groups, A Companion To Office 2016
The market for work-focused chat apps seems to be exploding, so it was only a matter of time before Microsoft got in on the action. Outlook Groups is a team chat app that requires and integrates with Office 365, so those of you who subscribe to the cloud-based Office service might want to look into it. That makes sense if you already use 365, especially with the support for natively viewing and annotating documents.
Outlook Groups enables you to engage with your team on the go with an Office 365 work or school account. Take part in the latest discussions, share photos and notes and collaborate on files. With Outlook Groups you can:
- Easily participate in group email conversations
- Share photos and “like” a message, or @mention a person or a group
- Work together using the shared team OneNote’s notebook
- View and co-author Office documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) shared with your group
Android Police coverage: Verizon Launches Go90, A Free Video Streaming Service With A Social Spin Aimed At Mobile Devices
Verizon has tried various add-ons to its wireless service before. The latest one is go90, a repository of web video that's exclusive to its mobile devices. The content is a mix of cable TV shows and YouTube-style videos, but there doesn't seem to be any real reason to use it over the likes of, well, YouTube. There are a few nice freebies, like episodes of the Daily Show, but otherwise it's pretty bare... and actually using this app on LTE will eat into your data limit like crazy.
With go90TM, get your fix of the latest entertainment ranging from famous to fringe -- including reality tv shows such as Love & Hip Hop and Chopped, comedies such as The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, live sports from the NCAA, upcoming movie trailers, cool gaming stuff from Nerdist, AND exclusive and original series from VICE, Elite Daily, AwesomenessTV and many more. Much more.
Android Police coverage: Synology's New RT1900ac Router Gets Its Own Android App: DS Router
If you use a Synology RT1900ac router, this app will let you control it. It's basically a fancier version of the web-based manager interfaces you're probably used to.
DS router is designed as your Personal Network Control Center on your Android device. From the initial setup of your Synology Router, to applying parental control settings to protect your children from inappropriate websites, or even fine-tuning your network's firewall settings, DS router makes network management truly easy, intuitive and mobile.
This isn't so much a companion app for LEGO's new Skylanders-style playset-game combo as it is an advertisement. You can see all of the various licensed sets (including Doctor Who, DC superheroes, Portal, Back to the Future, and a ton of LEGO themed add-ons) in the gallery. The app includes a tracker for your collection (several hundred dollars to collect them all), badges, unlockable wallpapers, and promo videos.
Take LEGO® Dimensions™ on the go with the official companion app. You can explore expansion packs, game videos and share your collection and wish list with family & friends. The LEGO Dimensions companion app contains a wealth of information including videos, screenshots and expansion pack build/rebuild instructions.
Adobe Illustrator Draw
Illustrator is Adobe's vector image editor, a companion to Photoshop that's useful for anyone who needs scalable graphics. But artists tend to prefer it as well, which is probably why the mobile version is aimed at freehand drawing. You'll want some kind of stylus (ideally with the active digitizer on the Note series and similar devices) to take advantage of the tools in the app. It's a free download, but Creative Cloud subscribers will find the most utility in the connected tools.
Create finished vector illustrations with easy and intuitive touch controls. Send your artwork as layered files to Adobe Illustrator CC or as flat images to Photoshop CC. Create free-hand drawings with smooth, scalable strokes. Zoom up to 64x to apply finer details. A selection of five different pen tips — each with adjustable opacity, size and color — produce exactly the look you want. Create complexity, depth and dimension with up to 10 drawing layers and a photo layer. Duplicate, merge, flip, scale and adjust the opacity of each one.
Adobe Capture CC
Capture CC is a targeted tool intended to allow artists and designers to quickly capture colors and images on the go with a mobile camera, then upload them to Creative Cloud for use in projects. Capture includes some basic tools to edit a color scheme or a brush on the go, though you'll probably want to wait until you get to a desktop machine to do anything intensive. Adobe stock photos are available inside the app, but you'll need to subscribe to Creative Cloud to do anything particularly useful with Capture.
Quickly capture, edit and share uniquely crafted design assets — including brushes, colors, filters and shapes — to use in apps like Adobe Photoshop CC and Illustrator CC. It’s Brush CC, Color CC and Shape CC, all in one place. Extract color themes from photos and the world around you. Play with presets based on color theory — or use a color wheel and RGB sliders for manual changes. Instantly convert what you see, or have drawn, into vector graphics. Use the slider to adjust the contrast and create fills. Later, toggle +/– to add or remove details.
