Guys, when Amazon announces stuff, they announce the hell out of some stuff. Like, who cares about subtlety? Not the folks at Amazon - they'll just go crazy on a Thursday morning and announce like nine new products all at once. I like their zeal. Not only did they take the wraps off of a few new Fire tablets, but they also announced the recently-rumored Fire TV with 4K playback for $99, a new "gaming edition" bundle of said Fire TV for $140, and an updated Fire TV Stick with voice controls for $50. That's a lot of stuff. Let's dig in.

The New Fire TV and Gaming Edition

The big news here is, of course, the addition of support for 4k streaming. This is mostly due to the updated hardware - Amazon says the new Fire TV has 75 percent more processing power than its predecessor, which is a pretty massive jump. While specifics weren't mentioned, it was noted that the new FTV is powered by a 64-bit quad-core Mediatek processor (last year's model has a 1.7 GHz Snapdragon 600) with dedicated GPU and has "four times" the RAM of the Chromecast, which would put it at 2GB - the same as the original Fire TV. Like last year, this one only has 8 GB of internal storage, but there's also a microSD card slot for expansion.

Of course, there are a lot more subtle updates here, too - improved Wi-Fi, support for HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding), and Dolby Audio are all along for the ride.

And then there's gaming. Amazon was really proud of the gaming aspect of the original Fire TV, but in a world where NVIDIA's SHIELD exists, it's much harder to get excited about it now. Still, the company has updated its gaming controller for the new Fire TV, and it is also offering a "Gaming Edition" bundle, which includes the new FTV, controller, 32GB microSD card, and two free games - Ducktales and Shovel Knight - for $140. If you were already planning on picking up the new Fire TV and want a little extra functionality, this may be the way to go.

New Fire TV Stick

Aside from the new, more powerful Fire TV, Amazon also announced an improved Fire TV Stick, this time with voice actions on the remote. The PR was incredibly scant on details here, so I'm inclined to believe this is actually identical to last year's FTV Stick, just with a new remote and slightly higher price point. Still, the voice stuff was what made FTV so good last year (but again, everything is different now), so it's nice to have it out of the box on the Stick.

Fire OS 5 and Alexa

Like the new Fire Tablets, the updated TV stuff is running Fire OS 5. This adds support for Alexa, Amazon's voice assistant that made its debut on the company's flagship speaker, the Echo. Essentially, this means you can do more than just search for movies, shows, actors, etc. on the TV - you'll be able to ask Alexa things about weather, sports scores, traffic, and more. You know, just like Google Now, only...different. More Amazon-ey.

There are more updates planned for Alexa into next year, with features like full control of the Fire TV using just voice coming at some point. Alexa will also be available on the original Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, though it wasn't mentioned when that would roll out.

Both the new Fire TV and Fire TV Stick are available for pre-order beginning today, with the former shipping on October 5th and the latter on October 22nd.
