Those who are always on the lookout for a good buy probably have some experience with Slickdeals. The web's most popular location for bargain hunting isn't new to Android, but the experience on mobile has always been a little bit lacking. As Slickdeal's current app has gotten fairly stale, they have not been sitting on their hands. Now in beta, an update to v3.0 features a completely revamped look with better spacing, tabs instead of a hamburger menu, and a smoother overall experience.

While some might call it blasphemy, this update arguably becomes better in spite of being a departure from Material Design. Off with the slide-in menu, in with tabbed browsing. Of course, a much-improved use of white space comes right out of the Lollipop UI handbook and contributes to the improvement in a big way.

For comparison's sake, here is the current stable version in the Play Store:

A major issue in the current stable is that it is not always easy to tell where you have navigated in the app. For instance, in the screenshot on the right above, would you have any idea that you are in the forums rather than the frontpage without looking closely? Using tabs and some other cues in the new version helps to deal with this.

There are some other new features, such as the ability to edit forum posts and give reputation. I am particularly happy about a change to the settings. See below:

Left: old, right: new

It's a minor tweak, but I have always found it difficult to understand how many notifications I should expect. The beta UI really helps to clear that up.
