Solid Explorer File Manager

Android Police coverage: Solid Explorer 2.0 Is Finally Out After A Lengthy Beta Test, New Paid Plugins Available Too

Solid Explorer is back, and more solid than ever. The popular file explorer has been given a complete relaunch for version 2.0, focusing primarily on a Material Design user interface refresh. All of the advanced features from the previous versions are intact (some of which require inexpensive upgrades in the form of paid plugins), and the visuals can be further tweaked with custom icon sets. The app is free for two weeks, after which you need to spring for the $2 pro version.

--

Looking for a good file explorer with a sleek, modern look and many features? Good to see you here. Solid Explorer is the best looking file and cloud manager with two independent panels, which brings to you a new file browsing experience. This is the only fully featured file manager with Material Design you can find in the Play Store. It's better, faster and solid when compared to the competition.

Tossup

Android Police coverage: Opinion Gathering App 'Tossup' Is The Latest Release From Microsoft Garage

Microsoft Garage cannot be stopped. Their latest project for Android is designed to quickly gauge interest among groups or friends, presumably in the hope that everyone doesn't end up at the Olive Garden again (Gary). Simple yes/no polls, restaurant picks, and meetup locations are supported, as are email or SMS invitations... but there doesn't seem to be much integration with existing social networks.

--

Tossup, a Microsoft Garage project, makes event planning and opinion-gathering a cinch. You ask the questions. Your friends cast the votes. Where to go. When to meet. Tossup lets everybody know. Use Tossup when you need:

• A quick yes or no count
• To find and pick a restaurant
• To agree on when to meet
• Your friend’s opinion

Tuber: The YouTube Companion

Android Police coverage: [New App] Tuber Is A Way To Watch Your Subscribed YouTube Channels Without The Frills Or Clutter Of The Official App

Hehe. Tuber. This app is named after a potato. It's not as delicious, though: Tuber simplifies the act of watching YouTube video subscriptions, enabling faster and more streamlined content delivery. If that phrase doesn't mean anything, just trust us that the official YouTube app kinda sucks when it comes to watching subscription content.

--

Sick of needing to sort through new videos, recommended videos, and sponsored videos to get to the content YOU want to watch? You subscribed to your channels for a reason. Watch them with Tuber.

Star Wars

Android Police coverage: Disney Releases A Star Wars App With News, A Sound Board, And Other Stuff To Get You Excited For The New Movie

Star Wars is coming. If you're still not aware that there's a new movie in the works after Comic-Con weekend, no amount of digital marketing from Disney will change that. If you know about it and already have your ball droid toy pre-order in, then this app will let you indulge your inner Star Wars nerd for hours. The main function is a new portal for Episode 7, but there are augmented reality toys, SW-themed tools for weather and fan communities, and a whole lot more. Go nuts.

Halo Channel

Android Police coverage: Microsoft Brings The Official Halo Channel App To Google Play - Lots Of Videos, But No Games

If you live and breathe Microsoft's Halo sci-fi shooter series, and you haven't yet devoured every single piece of in-continuity story that isn't in the games themselves, this app is for you. In addition to Halo video series like Forward Unto Dawn and Red vs Blue, Halo Channel features game walkthroughs, multiplayer stage strategies, and all sorts of video game detritus. The only thing it doesn't have is any actual Halo gameplay.

Swappa Price

Android Police coverage: Swappa Releases An App That Tells You How Much Your Phone Is Worth, But That's All

This long-awaited official Swappa app lets you shop on the popular secondary phone and tablet market, as well as post your own devices for sale... wait, it doesn't do that? Really? Apparently the only thing that Swappa's Android app will let you do is see the current average price for your phone or tablet, and watch its value decrease on the price history chart. What gives?

--

Installing Swappa Price on your smartphone means that you will finally know what your device is really worth. Your smartphone is worth far more than ridiculously low price your carrier offers for it. Swappa Price does most of the work for you by figuring out which device you have, and we keep you in the loop with a monthly price update. It’s also easy to search for other devices with Swappa Price.

RideWith carpool by Waze

Android Police coverage: Waze Launches 'RideWith' Carpool Service, Limited Availability In Israel Only Right Now

Waze is a popular traffic and navigation app, but did you know you could use it to catch a ride? Well, you can if you live in Israel (where the Google subsidiary is still based). But Waze doesn't want anyone to confuse its RideWith service with the controversial Uber - this is purely a carpool service, and drivers are reimbursed rather than paid. The app automatically transfers a bit of money to cover gas and mileage when you're dropped off.

--

RideWith finds you the most convenient, affordable ride to work by connecting you to the world’s largest community of drivers. It’s carpool powered by Waze. How does it work? Just ask for a ride. RideWith notifies you when a ride is found with a Waze commuter who drives in your direction. All you have to do is show up on time, ready to go. As for the price? In exchange for a ride, you help cover the cost. When you get dropped off, payment is transferred automatically.

ProShot

ProShot is the latest attempt to cram every possible DSLR-style feature into an Android camera app. All of the standard options are here, plus a variety of advanced shooting modes and JPEG, RAW, and combined save options. Uniquely, this app also includes a video option with adjustable resolution, framerate, and bitrate. You'll still be out of luck if you need any kind of zoom, but for snapshots this app should do better than most built-in options. Unfortunately it only works with Android 5.1 at the moment.

--

  • Auto, Program, Manual, and two fully configurable Custom modes, just like a DSLR*
  • Manual, semi-manual, or automatic control over exposure, flash, focus, ISO, shutter speed, torch intensity, and white balance*
  • Shoot in JPEG, RAW or RAW + JPEG*
  • Shoot full resolution in 16:9, 4:3, and 1:1

Trring - Awesome Lock screen

Trring is a lockscreen replacement app that places a ton of app shortcuts in a ring, sort of like a 21st century version of a rotary phone. Other shortcuts are also supported, like quick toggles for settings, music controls, or immediate contacts. It's certainly an interesting idea, and the developers are self-aware enough to include a "pocket detector" feature so you don't toggle Airplane Mode by accident. The $1 pro version unlocks more advanced features.

--

Trring is an awesome lock screen app, using which you can launch any app or call your friend/relative i.e., Speed dial (available in Pro version) or you can even toggle settings like Wifi, Bluetooth, etc. straight from the lock screen. Trring uses old rotary dialer style, means you can do all the above actions just like you would dial a number in a rotary dialer phone. Because of its rotary dialer style, you can access your regular tasks without worrying about any accidental touches on your phone.

Crossroad

Crossroad allows you to create a shared album with many contributors whose photos are automatically synced to all members, so no one misses that shot where you can totally see Jim swapping the labels on the wedding gifts in the background. The interface is pretty good, and the app includes easy functions for sharing specific photos or entire albums with individuals or social networks. Web access for desktops is also available.

--

A party, many pictures taken with smartphones, many « Yes, sure, I’ll send them to you tomorrow », and then… nothing. Crossroad is the app allowing you to finally GATHER AUTOMATICALLY and instantly all the pictures taken during a shared experience with your friends or family members. With Crossroad, you will never chase after your friends or their pictures once back home because everything is automatic.

Tiles Instagram Lock Screen

This is an app that replaces Android's standard lockscreen with a stylish tile wall full of Instagram photos. It's actually one of the more visually appealing Instagram apps that I've seen in a long while, even if that squared-off clock looks a bit like a Windows Phone design. Photos are available offline thanks to background updates, and the trim color is user-selectable.

--

Tiles turns your lock screen into a beautiful collage of your Instagram feed. View and like posts without having to unlock your phone even when you’re offline. Customise your feed to only show certain accounts on your lock screen and personalise to your own taste with a choice of theme colours. Enjoy the photos of people you follow on Instagram using a beautiful collage layout on your lock screen. Select which accounts you want to see (and not see.) on your lock screen.

The Met

This is the official app for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It has nothing to do with the Mets, or any of the other Metropolitan stuff in New York. Or any other city. It has a map, a calendar of events, and a dedicated button to tell Michael Bloomberg how awesome he is*.

*Not really. That's coming in the next update.

--

Whether you’re new to the Met or a passionate Member, visiting as a family or just looking for something different, start here. The app is the easiest way to see what’s happening at the Met every day—wherever you are.

  • Map of the museum, and ability to pin the location of events, exhibitions, and artworks
  • Recommendations on what to see, from artworks to architecture
  • Full listings of our exhibitions, events, and how to visit the Museum
  • A special section for Met Members with upcoming events and opportunities
  • Ability to save your favorite art, events, and exhibitions—and add them to your calendar

The Met app is made possible through the support of Bloomberg Philanthropies.

Birchbox

Birchbox is a shopping app designed exclusively for personal beauty products. Apparently Birchbox is a monthly sampler pack for things like shampoo and perfume and stuff (all those things I tend to buy after finding the lowest price in the aisle), and the app lets you purchase full-sized versions if you're pleased with the results. A few Cosmo-style articles are included for good measure.

--

Birchbox is the best way to shop for beauty and grooming. Explore our online shop, get style ideas and inspiration, and more.

  • Explore products, articles, videos, and shop offers that have been picked just for you
  • View your box history and purchase full-size versions of samples you love
  • Keep an eye on your monthly Birchbox shipment from anywhere with mobile box tracking
  • Search the Birchbox Shop by brand or product

Lenka

Lenka is Instagram for black and white photos. It aspires to be a little more artsy than most of the clones out there - dig that full frame shooting mode - and includes a few editing tools. It's a decent solution if you want something quick and dirty, but taking a normal photo and importing it into an editor (even a mobile one) would probably yield better results.

--

Lenka is a remarkably simple yet powerful, dedicated black & white camera app developed in France by world renowned photographer Kevin Abosch (kevinabosch.com) for professionals & amateurs alike, to create beautiful black & white photographs.

  • Realtime "What you see is what you get" preview as you shoot.
  • Pinch screen to switch from rectangular "full frame" format to square format.
  • Toggle between auto and manual tap to focus by tapping the "AF" button on the control panel.
  • Adjust contrast manually with control slider.
  • Subtle cooler/warmer Temperature Tint control slider.
  • Option to take photo by pressing volume buttons.
  • Edit photos (crop/rotate) and share via email or messenger and to Facebook and Twitter.
  • Export photos to Instagram. (Must have Instagram on your device for this feature)
  • Tap the lightbulb icon to illuminate your subjects with constant light (not flash)

Fontli

Fontli is Instagram for (man, I'm tired of that phrase) typography nerds. Is there a reason that font buffs can't use Instagram, or Twitter, or Flickr, or any of the dozens of other available social networks to post photos and talk about them? No. No there is not.

--

Fontli is a simple way to capture and share beautiful photos of type. Once you publish a photo, it will show up on your followers’ feed and they can like, comment on and share it. You can also follow typographers, designers, illustrators and other typoholics around the world to get your daily dose of type love. And it goes beyond likes. If you have trouble finding a typeface, Fontli lets you ask for help from the community. Photos can be tagged with typefaces from MyFonts and added to collections so more people can find them.

Minute Video Discovery

You see? You see what happens when you start putting arbitrary limits on text and video length, Twitter? We get apps like this one, which crams formerly untruncated videos down into 15 seconds, encouraging a "too long, didn't watch" attitude. THIS IS YOUR FAULT TWITTER - this is why people comment on a 200-word story before they finish reading the title.

--

Minute’s unique video highlights enable you to discover more in less time. We have developed the optimal way to watch personalized online video content. Why waste time searching the Internet for great videos when Minute can put all this and more into the palm of your hand. Minute makes your online video watching experience simple, efficient, and effortless. Each day you will receive a digest of ten personalized video highlights.

AGT: America's Got Talent

This app lets you vote on the America's Got Talent TV show from your phone. You don't have to vote. In fact, you don't even have to watch. Really, you don't. No one is making you tune in to this. But you can. (You don't have to.)

--

The America's Got Talent Official App is the easiest and best way to PLAY ALONG, VOTE and SAVE. Tell America which acts you love during the show, mix and match judge phrases for your buzzers, cast your vote during the live voting shows and save your favorite acts on results night. • Save acts during results night
  • Join the conversation by sharing your favorite acts on Facebook
  • Tweet Nick and the judges straight from the app

Squish: Mickey Mouse Clubhouse

This Disney app lets you play with digital clay versions of Mickey Mouse and his pals. It's actually surprisingly engaging - the creators more or less tried to replicate Play-Doh in app form, including the visceral pleasure of smooshing and melting the whole thing with a hair drier. Kids can use the stock models of Mickey and Minnie, or create their own models with a selection of pre-sculpted pieces.

--

Welcome to the Mickey Mouse "Clayhouse," where you can sculpt and squish anything your imagination can dream up. Stretch, push, and pull clay to make your very own version of Mickey or Minnie, or start from scratch with dozens of fun clay shapes from the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse universe. Once you’re finished, you can twist, inflate, and melt your creation using fun and unique Squishers.

Manufacturer And Tie-In Apps

RE:Shakespeare

This app is a collection of shorts and tech demos that try to bring The Bard into the 21st century. It's not exactly cutting-edge theater, but students and fans of Shakespeare should get a kick out of some of the new interpretations. The app is sponsored by the Royal Shakespeare Company and Samsung, so those without Sammy phones or tablets aren't welcome.

--

Think Shakespeare’s boring? It’s time to think again. RE:Shakespeare is an exciting new way to bring Shakespeare to life, from the Royal Shakespeare Company and Samsung. Join David Tennant and a host of RSC experts and celebrities as they help unlock the potential of Shakespeare’s work through cutting-edge technology. Watch scenes from Much Ado About Nothing in amazing 360° action; remix Shakespeare to Shlomo’s human beatbox; lip-sync with poet Indigo Williams’ Shakespearean love lines and put-downs or try Akala’s Hip-hop vs. Shakespeare Quiz.

Work Item Studio

This is a Microsoft app that lets you view group workflow for Visual Studio Online. You'll need a copy of said software to make the app useful. Developers who use Microsoft's IDE can view and edit work items from the app, then track the status of their queries. The app also conforms surprisingly well to Material Design - the Microsoft Garage team seems to get a little more leeway for that sort of thing.

--

Work Item Studio, a Microsoft Garage project, allows you to view, create and edit work items from your projects on Visual Studio Online. You can also see a list of all your queries, along with the number of results in each of them. Quickly run your queries to see detailed results. With Work Item Studio, you can easily track the status of work items and queries. Just add them to your list of in-app favorites and keep track of your work.

balloon photo(beta)

Sony keeps making these exclusive add-ons for their manufacturer camera app. We don't know why. It seems to be impossible to stop them. This one is basically Doge: The Camera Filter, recording voices before the photo is taken and inserting them into the final shot afterward.

--

1. Let's take photos
1. Launch balloon photo(beta)
2. On viewfinder, voice recognition is running continuously. Let's talk at your desired timing.
Every time the device succeeds in recognizing words, speech balloon will appear.
3. Tap the camera key to take photos at your desired timing.
Speech balloons which are spoken from 5 minutes before and after shooting are also saved.

2. Let's select a photo
1. Tap Editor button on viewfinder, then photo selector screen is launched. You can also launch it directly from launcher.
2. Select a photo to be combined with speech balloon.

3. Let's save photo with balloon
1. Edit balloons.
2. Tap save button at right center on editor screen. Then the photo with speech balloons is saved.

Live screen streaming

Android Police coverage: Live Screen Streaming App From Sony Streams Your Screen Live To Twitch And YouTube, But It Only Works With Z4 Generation [Updated]

Say hello to the first app that can live-stream to Twitch from an Android device... that isn't an NVIDIA SHIELD. Sony's official app lets you live stream content to YouTube or Twitch from an Xperia device, but unfortunately it only works with the Xperia Z4 generation. Everyone else will have to wait for an upgrade or for Twitch to release its own streaming app.

--

Are you a mobile gamer? Now you can let your friends and followers tune in to Twitch or YouTube to watch you play your favorite mobile game LIVE. This app enables you to live stream everything that happens on your Xperia screen LIVE to viewers on Twitch or YouTube around the world. Beyond gaming, you can also use this app to live stream other things you are doing on your Xperia smartphone or tablet to YouTube. Autodesk is back with another tool for CAD designers (or at least the ones that like to use Autodesk software). Microsoft Power BI

Power BI is a business management app from Microsoft, and now it has an official dashboard app on Android. (Does Microsoft make more apps for Android than for Windows Phone at this point?) You'll need to use Power BI on the desktop and the web in order to get the data on your phone.

--
