Periscope

Android Police coverage: Twitter's Video Broadcasting App Periscope Surfaces On Android

Periscope is an instant live-streaming app that ties into Twitter as a social and distribution network. No, not that instant live-streaming app that ties into Twitter as a social and distribution network, the one that's actually made by Twitter. For you people who actually want to use this, the app has come to Android after two months of iOS exclusivity, because Twitter really doesn't care what you think.

Periscope lets you broadcast live video to the world. Going live will instantly notify your followers, who can join, comment and send you hearts in real time. The more hearts you get, the higher they flutter on the screen.

• REPLAY: When your broadcast is over, you can make it available for replay so viewers can watch later. Viewers can replay your broadcast with comments and hearts to relive the full experience. Replays currently last 24 hours. You can delete your replay at any time.

• PRIVATE: If you want to broadcast to specific people, press the lock icon before going live and choose who you want to invite to your broadcast.

• TWITTER: You can choose to share your Periscope broadcasts on Twitter by tapping the bird icon before you start broadcasting. When you go live, you’ll tweet a link so that your Twitter followers can watch on the web (or in the app)

MixRadio

Android Police coverage: Personalized Music Streaming Service MixRadio Is Now Live On Android

Considering the razor-thin margins that music services are claimed to operate on, it's amazing that so many of them keep popping up. The latest is MixRadio, a UK import. Aside from a supposedly dynamic mix of genres that create automatic playlists based on your likes and dislikes, it's not all that different from Pandora or Spotify. At the moment it's free and includes offline listening.

MixRadio is the perfect FREE app for music lovers who like to discover fresh new tunes every day. As you listen, MixRadio learns the artists you like, giving you a PERSONALIZED experience. The more you listen, the better it gets. So, with a whole world of songs out there, you can spend more time listening and less time searching. Enjoy playlists custom-made to your unique taste from our library of over 35 million tracks.

Android Police coverage: SoundHound Has Developed Its Own Voice Assistant 'Hound' To Take On Google Now, Currently Available As An Invite Only Beta

Hound, the new abbreviated app from SoundHound, wants to replace Google's voice searches for quick access to detailed information. And according to feedback from early users of the beta, it does that: the app is remarkably fast, and includes such built-in tools as language translation and a mortgage calculator. Unfortunately the app is in invite-only mode for now, so you'll have to request access.

Say it. Get it. Hound is an app that you speak to, and it understands what you are looking for or trying to do. It’s like a voice-enabled search engine. It’s also like a personal assistant. Being the fastest and easiest way to get the information, entertainment, and communication services you want, Hound is built for a hands-free world, from the ground up. You will find yourself opening Hound to do what you used to type and tap for, because now you can simply Hound and get it faster.

Naturally all of it fits in with Runtastic's collection of apps and web tools.

Office Lens

Android Police coverage: Microsoft Office Lens, An App For Scanning Documents With Your Camera, Is Now Available As A Stable Release

Document scanning apps have been around for a while: it's one of those almost magical functions that smartphones are now able to provide. Microsoft's take on the document scanner isn't any better or worse than most of the previous options, but it includes direct integration with OneDrive and conversion to Word, PowerPoint, or PDF files.

Office Lens trims, enhances, and makes pictures of whiteboards and docs readable. You can use Office Lens to convert images to PDF, Word and PowerPoint files, and you can even save images to OneNote or OneDrive. Office Lens is like having a scanner in your pocket. Like magic, it will digitalize notes on whiteboards or blackboards. Always find important documents or business cards. Sketch your ideas and snap a picture for later. Don't lose receipts or stray sticky notes again.

Close5: Buy & Sell Locally

Android Police coverage: eBay's Close5 Android App Lets You Buy And Sell Locally In San Francisco, San Diego, And Las Vegas

I can't recall the last time I sold something on eBay, instead of simply listing it on Craigslist for quick (and admittedly slightly less) cash. Perhaps eBay has noticed the trend, because it's dipping its toe into the local sales market with the new Close5 app. This one actually encourages you to haggle (which, let's face it, is practically unavoidable on Craigslist) right in the UI. At the moment it's only available in San Diego, San Francisco, and Las Vegas.

Close5 is an easy and fun way to buy & sell locally. Find items for sale in your area and broadcast what you’re selling to those around you in just seconds. Its classifieds made easier. Find deals on home goods, fashion & accessories, and baby & kid’s items all in your area. Search within 5 miles, or extend your search radius to scope out items in new areas. Close5 is free and safe. All ads are monitored by our dedicated team, which you can always contact at support@close5.com

Layout from Instagram

Android Police coverage: Instagram's New 'Layout' App Offers Yet Another Way To Crop And Arrange Photo Collages

It figures that Instagram would eventually tire of "artistic" filters and move on to crazier ways to make mobile photographers feel proud of amazingly ordinary photos. The new Layout app (shamelessly emblazoned with "from Instagram") has a new collection of more extreme filters that chop up images and put them back together in interesting ways, with a greater degree of user control than we've seen in the original app and its army of clones.

Instagram's newest app is simpler, cleaner and way more fun than the way you're used to making collages. Layout lets you create one-of-a-kind layouts by remixing your own photos and sharing them with your friends. Choose photos from your gallery—or use the built-in Photo Booth to take spur-of-the-moment shots—and instantly see them laid out in various combinations. Pick the layout you like best, then edit it to make it your own.

Moon Tours

Android Police coverage: NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory Releases Moon Tours App To Satiate Your Lunar Curiosity

Moon Tours is an Android app that compiles a huge amount of data collected from the moon's surface and presents it in a mobile-friendly way. The description says it's specifically designed for the benefit of lunar scientists and the like, but since it's free, there's nothing stopping regular earthbound Joes from checking it out as well.

The Lunar Mapping and Modeling Portal (LMMP) is a web-based portal that provides a suite of interactive visualization, analysis tools, and data products to enable lunar scientists, engineers, mission planners, and the public to access mapped lunar data products from past and current lunar missions. There are over 600+ scientific datasets/layers that include digital elevation maps (DEMs), slope maps, hazard maps, gravity maps, mineralogy maps, and imagery.

Google Spotlight Stories

Android Police coverage: Google Releases Spotlight Stories App With Support For Non-Motorola Devices And A New Story, Free For A Limited Time

This is a collection of animated short films previously exclusive to Motorola devices - it looks like Google got the art in the breakup. The new version of the app should work with all Android devices on 4.2 or later, but early users are reporting a few compatibility issues. The app includes the three original Spotlight stories plus a live-action short, and there are indications that new shorts will be available in the future, possibly as paid extras.

Immerse yourself in a world of storytelling made just for mobile. Engineers and critically-acclaimed filmmakers are bringing stories to life using the latest advances in mobile technology. Using 3D and 2D animation, 360° spherical cinema-quality video, full-sphere surround sound, and sensor fusion techniques, the screen is now a window into a story that unfolds all around you. Look anywhere, follow individual characters, watch it over again and again.

HeadsOff

Most users were excited when Android's heads-up notifications were discovered, then made default in Lollipop. But if you aren't one of those users, this app will disable the pop-up notifications, either across your phone or on an app-by-app basis. It's basically the same thing as those heads-up enabler apps for KitKat... but in reverse.

HeadsOff will disable Heads-up notifications on your phone. You can also disable Heads-up notifications only for selected apps.

• Disable Heads-up notifications

• Disable Heads-up notifications for selected apps

• Disable Heads-up notifications on the lockscreen

Light - Answering Engine

Light wants to replace Google's Knowledge Graph with quick and easy-to-find answers to basic queries, all of which are filled in by "experts" on that particular topic. It's an impressively fast and simple way to get specific answers, and Light makes a point of how there are no links, but that also means you should be wary of the uncited information given by anonymous users.

Light is your buddy for life who has all the answers to every doubt or question you have. You can use Light to ask about anything - movies, music, travel, sports, facts, meanings, history, geography, psychology, fun facts, trivia, and more. When you ask a query you will receive an exact answer. Unlike a search engine, you dont have to go through various links to get an answer. Light algorithms do it for you so that you are not stuck to the screen, even if it sometimes takes a few minutes.

Touchless Chat

Touchless Chat is a tool that's designed specifically to allow you to add speech-to-text tools to a wide selection of chat apps. The implementation of multi-service contacts, complete with reverse text-to-speech and multilanguage support, is impressive. The app is designed specifically for hands-free use in the car and works with Android Wear and Tasker out of the box. Not bad. Some features require some rather pricey IAP upgrades.

Touchless Chat will allow you to send hands-free messages in many messaging apps including SMS, Hangouts, Whatsapp, Facebook Messager and more. You can even add your own. Your device doesn't need to be rooted to use Touchless chat. With the Touchless Chat Widgets you can have an icon on your home screen that directly opens a contact on its default app. Each contact has its own designated app, so you never need to remember which app you use for each contact again.

DoorViewer Security Camera

DoorViewer is an interesting app that's designed to allow you to turn an unused (hopefully) Android phone into a peephole security cam. Start the app, then tape or otherwise affix your phone to your door's security lens, and it will use the camera to record the goings-on outside. It's a nice security cam for apartment-dwellers who can't modify the building they live in. The app is free to try for three days, after which it costs $1 for an upgrade.

DoorViewer is a unique android app that will turn a spare, cheap android phone with a decent camera into a multipurpose security camera and especially can be used as a digital viewer & recorder for your home safety.

1. Easy to install & use - No drills for setup. Internet or computer not required for video recording. You can use sticky velcro strips, or card paper setup to mount mobile on door peephole. (Installation guide for mounting mobile on door: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_7BYCgysmSZZnlhR3FLQXZscTA/view?usp=sharing)

2. Larger peephole view through mobile display and zoom feature.

3. Safety: Cool Down & Temperature check

The only camera recording app in market that checks for increase in device temperature due to continuous usage of camera, which in turn affects device shell life.

Cool down will shut camera for a short interval during recording and thus reduce device heat. Temperature check will ensure that if specified maximum limit has reached then recording / camera is shut down.

4. Power saving mode for longer battery life.

5. Highly Configurable as per your needs.

appear.in

Appear In is a pretty standard text and video chat alternative to established services like Skype and Hangouts. The system has a specific advantage in that it requires no accounts or registration, and works across iOS, Android, and the web. Invites can be sent via a standard link, SMS, Facebook, or email. If you need a quick way to get a free web conference going across multiple devices (up to 8 participants), this looks like a decent way to go about it.

See up to 8 friends on live video while chatting with them. Create your own room (appear.in/your-room) and send the link on chat, Facebook messenger, SMS or email to invite people. No registration required, once people click the link, they'll appear with you.

  • Group chat - don't be lonely, invite up to 8 friends to a chat
  • Video + chat - see each other while chatting, don't miss out on seeing your friends' reactions.
  • Make your own chat room - create a cool name for your chat room, you can name it anything and set your own background image: appear.in/funny-friday, appear.in/yoyoyoyo.
  • Any device - appear.in can be used on any computer with a webRTC-enabled browser (e.g. Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Vivaldi), or on most new smart phones and tablets.
  • No registration - anyone can join a chat in appear.in, all they have to do is click the link to the room (appear.in/your-room).

Qwik Beta

Qwik is a replacement for the swipe-up Google Now gesture that allows you to quickly call or message anyone in your contacts. That's about it. The app is currently in beta and is adding additional functionality, notably support for a custom voice activation code via a separate module.

Qwik can be launched via the Google Now gesture on devices with on screen keys. Don’t have on screen keys? Qwik can also be launched by long pressing the home or recent apps key. The app will open up as an overlay above your current application, this means you will be able to productively perform tasks without having to leave your current application.

Bundle

Here's another photo sharing app. This one is specifically designed to automatically group your photos into "bundles" to facilitate easier sharing and organizing. The interface is noticeably better than most similar apps (a generous dollop of Material Design doesn't hurt) and sharing directly via phone numbers is supported.

Group and organize your photos and create a shared photo library with the ones you care about. We’re on a mission to make managing, sharing and storing your photos faster, cheaper and more fun. Bundle uses your phone number to match your bundles with friends. But don't worry, your number stays private and it makes it really easy to invite new people to your bundles. :)

Make My Day

Trusted travel info vendor Lonely Planet would like to guide you around New York, San Francisco, London, Paris, Barcelona, and/or Tokyo. These highly detailed guides include directions and reviews for local points of interest, plus a journal for you to record notes and photos. Unfortunately only some of the content is free, and you'll have to pay for the rest. Even more unfortunately, I was unable to think of a decent Clint Eastwood joke for this description.

Make My Day is a brand-new experience from Lonely Planet that lets you plan your perfect day in one of six of the world’s greatest cities, then reference that day on your trip. Enjoy a sampling of our content for free, or upgrade to get everything we have to offer.

Yeplive™ Beta

Hey look, another live streaming app, this time using Maps as a backbone instead of Twitter. As you might expect, the interface is centered around streaming from specific locations and finding active and recorded streams based on their proximity to local businesses.

Yeplive™ is a simple way to stream and share moments as they’re happening. A location-centric interface and unique discovery filters make Yeplive™ the most intuitive way to find out what’s happening in your world now. Livestream a video instantly by clicking record, engage with your viewers as you’re streaming, and share socially — it's that easy. For livestreams where location isn't vital, you can also search Yeplive™ by tag or title, or toggle between our Map View and Stack View with one click.

skeegle

And another livestream app, this time using Facebook. It looks like livestream clones are the Instagram clones of 2015... or at least they would be, if those weren't still coming out every week. This one is from UK carrier EE.

Skeegle lets you share all your special moments with your friends – not just recorded but live as they happen. Just sign up through Facebook™, create a group of friends from your address book, and start sharing, live.

Bonfire Photo Editor

We will never escape from a billion different variations of Instagram filters. At least this one doesn't have arbitrary cropping.

• Real-time filters

• Share photos with friends via social network

• Zoom in, zoom out and move the photo on screen

• Compare preview with original photo conveniently

Tough Enough

I'm not a huge fan of wrasslin, but WWE Tough Enough appears to be a sort of America's Next Top Model for oiled-up meatheads. This official second screen app for the show gives fans access to information on the cast and contestants and a small social network for chatting about the events onscreen. The usual collection of news and videos is packed in.

WWE’s revolutionary reality TV series WWE Tough Enough is back, and the show’s official app gives you the power to help decide who will win a WWE contract, the ultimate prize in the most interactive TV program in history. With the WWE Tough Enough App, you can help determine who stays and who packs their bags by participating in real-time voting as the contestant pool is whittled down to the top competitors.

PAW Patrol Draw & Play

PAW Patrol Draw & Play is, as the title suggests, equal parts kid-focused art app and activity center. It's pricey at $7, but that's not too terrible for a licensed app (based on a Nickelodeon cartoon, apparently), and there are no in-app purchases for kids to stumble across.

Make PAWsome art with the PAW Patrol. Kids can team up with Chase, Marshall, Skye, Rocky, Rubble, Zuma, Ryder and even the newest pup rescuer, Everest, to create amazing artwork with PAW Patrol Draw & Play. PAW Patrol Draw & Play combines intuitive and easy to use drawing, coloring and painting tools with a set of magical effects that kids can use to create amazing artwork.

LumiKids Beach by Lumosity

Here's another collection of kid-focused activities, this time apparently aimed at the 2-5 crowd. The beach-themed app includes the usual smattering of coloring book-style sections and basic cognitive tools, plus progress reports for parents. The app comes from the makers of the Luminosity "brain training" app, and it's free with no in-app purchases.

From the team at Lumosity, we welcome you to LumiKids Beach. Enjoy a day at the beach, sure to make you laugh out loud as you explore our open-ended world. It’s all fun in the sun. LumiKids Beach is the second app in the new product line, LumiKids by Lumosity. The LumiKids series is not intended to be brain training for kids, but instead aims to be a digital playspace that challenges cognitive, motor and social-emotional skills through intuitive and adaptive activities.

LEGO® Friends Music Maker

LEGO Friends is essentially LEGO's strange and misguided attempt to muscle in on the Barbie market (here's a tip, LEGO: girls like building blocks already, you don't have to dust them with glitter). This Music Maker app is a basic mixer that apparently includes music from the tie-in television show. As vapid as it is, at least it's free with no in-app purchases - always a plus for kid-focused apps.

With LEGO® Friends Music Maker, creative pop stars and singer/songwriters in training (kids ages 6+) can make their own hit songs. Choose from pre-recorded LEGO Friends sound bites, and mix, sing, edit, record and play your way to lots of fun star moments with pop sensation Livi, her Heartlake City Friends and your own friends.

  • Mix, edit, record and share all your hit songs
  • Make hit songs for pop star Livi and her Friends from Heartlake City – Mia, Emma, Andrea, Stephanie, Olivia
  • Make star moment theme songs for yourself and your best friends
  • Never made music before? Every star had to start somewhere. If it makes you happy, just PLAY.
  • Can’t sing? Just sing out loud anyway – you have a lifetime to practice.

This new app is a collection of 10 demos that should help you to get a grasp on the basics of designing environments and interfaces for virtual reality. HTC Mail

Android Police coverage: HTC's Exclusive Mail App Arrives In The Play Store

HTC really loves breaking out its custom apps onto the Play Store, whether or not people are actually using them. The latest is the official HTC Mail app, which supports standard POP and IMAP accounts plus Yahoo Mail, Exchange, and... Gmail. If you're using a manufacturer app for Gmail, I really want to meet you. Naturally the app only works with some HTC phones.

HTC Mail organizes all of your email accounts in once place thanks to compatibility with Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Outlook, Exchange ActiveSync and other IMAP or POP3 accounts. It’s simple to add accounts, compose messages, switch between folders and accounts or search for a message. Keep your inbox in check with the easy, intuitive HTC Mail.

Android Police coverage: HTC MirrorLink App Comes To The Play Store With Functionality You Will Only Enjoy While Driving

HTC's official car app is now available on the Play Store, presumably for easy updates without having to wait for carriers to get their collective rears in gear. This one is basically the same as HTC's standard car app, but works with MirrorLink-enabled car navigation and entertainment systems.

MirrorLink is the leading industry standard for car-phone connectivity because its service was designed for a wide range of automobiles and smartphones, including HTC’s. Just connect your HTC phone to a MirrorLink-enabled infotainment system with a cable. Using the screen and buttons on your dashboard, you’ll be able to control your phone like you would the car’s radio. That means it’s easy to keep your eyes on the road while enjoying hands-free navigation, phone calls, music and more.

Samsung Flow Beta

Android Police coverage: Samsung Releases Flow Beta With Support For Sharing Activities On Select Devices, But You're Not Missing Much

Hey look, an official Samsung app for sharing stuff between devices! Between Samsung devices, that is - you'll have to have two Samsung phones or tablets to share stuff via Samsung Flow, which uses local Bluetooth to quickly get web pages, directions, or what have you over to another device. It doesn't require Internet access... and that's about the only reason you'd use it over, say, Android's built-in share menu.

Move your activity to the device best suited for it, or pause it and get back to it when you have more time. Samsung Flow is a platform that allows applications to seamlessly transition your activities across devices and time. Using Flow, you can:

• Transfer an activity to the right device for a task. Pick up right where you left off rather than starting from scratch on the new device.

• Defer an activity when the right device is not immediately at hand or there just isn’t enough time to finish up a task. Resume it when you’re ready.
