Knights of Pen & Paper 2

Android Police coverage: Knights of Pen & Paper 2 Makes A Saving Throw, Ventures Into The Play Store

The first Knights of Pen & Paper was a refreshingly original mix of "real" tabletop RPGs and the video games that evolved out of them. The sequel adds more in just about every dimension: the graphics are richer, the story is more fleshed-out, and the old-fashioned turn-based combat (played with fantasy graphics on a literal RPG table) is more robust. Players looking for a little meta with their monster hunting will be pleased.

Prepare to join Knights of Pen & Paper 2 in a turn-based, retro style, pixel-art adventure full of danger, intrigue, and semi-appropriate cultural references. Players portray both party and game master playing a tabletop RPG, and must assemble both their characters, and the challenges they will face. Now including races like Dwarf or Elf, assemble the party of your choice, choose quests and combat encounters, delve dungeons, craft powerful items, and complain loudly to the GM.

Sunburn!

Android Police coverage: Noodlecake's Sunburn! Is Your Chance To Grab A Bunch Of Friends And Fly Into The Sun

In Sunburn, you play as an astronaut stranded in space trying to rescue your former shipmates. Using a tether and a jetpack, it's your job to get them to safety without falling into the gravity well of suspiciously small and common stars littered around the stages. Gameplay is a physics-based mix of the circular gravity in Angry Birds Space and the odd complications of an astronaut daisy chain. $3 with no in-app purchases.

Your ship is gone. Your crew is scattered. One option remains. Gather your crew... and jump into the sun. Reunite your shipmates and hurtle toward the end in 50+ distinctly dangerous gravity puzzles. You control the captain of a spaceship that is suddenly struck by a comet and destroyed. With no way to get home, the ship's crew is forced to face reality. They're doomed to die. There's no way out. But no matter what their fate may be, one thing is decided for certain. No one dies alone.

Snake Rewind

Android Police review: Snake Rewind Review: The Original Mobile Game Comes Back Without Selling Out

You wouldn't think that there could be much to do with the original Snake game, staple of a billion plastic Nokia phones all over the world. You'd be wrong. This official sequel from the creator of the original fleshes out the simple central concept with new stages, power-ups, and stylized "retro" graphics. The free game includes in-app purchases, but they're unusually reasonable.

The creator of the original mobile Snake is back. Taneli Armanto and Rumilus Design have joined forces to bring you Snake Rewind. Iconic elements and intuitive gameplay from the original Snake are combined with cool visual effects, sounds and many new features. The result is a game that will entertain, challenge and delight you time after time.

  • Rewind the snake to continue the game even after crashing.
  • Many different types of special fruit, with unique powers and effects.
  • 10 levels with distinct visuals and music, unlocked by completing fun and challenging missions.
  • Fruit store where boosters and items can be upgraded and purchased, using fruit that you collect while playing.

Til Morning's Light

Android Police coverage: Amazon Game Studios Releases 'Til Morning's Light' An Adventure Game With Puzzles And Monsters Galore

Amazon's latest exclusive game for its Fire hardware series is Til Morning's Light, a somewhat tame horror story starring a teenager who has to escape a creepy mansion before the break of dawn. It's a fairly standard game that focuses on exploration and puzzles to advance the plot, but the presentation is pretty good, and I'd be loathe to knock a premium game for a semi-exclusive platform... even if iOS users get the privilege of playing it while regular Android users don't.

--

Erica Page is an ordinary teenage girl, just trying to fit in. She’s also trapped in a mansion haunted by a 200 year-old curse. You know, the normal stuff. Help her explore the huge, creepy, and not exactly empty mansion, revealing its darkest secrets and hopefully a way out. There are clues to decipher, tools to collect, and puzzles to solve. If all else fails, Erica can beat the goo out of supernatural nasties with an arsenal of clubs, knives, and swords.

Breath of Light

Android Police coverage: Zen Puzzler Breath Of Light Mixes Basic Gravity Mechanics With Soothing Graphics And Music

Breath of Light is a casual zen take on the directional puzzle. Your job is to use various tools to direct a single stream of, uh, stuff into one or more goals on each stage, complicated by obstacles and the gravity-based nature of the flow. (Watch the video, it's hard to explain.) Simple but appealing visuals and soothing music help ease the player's mind, and with no timers or interface, it makes for a surprisingly immersive experience.

Hold a quiet moment. Breath of Light is a meditative and beautiful puzzle game with a hypnotic soundtrack by Winterpark. Inspired by modern minimalism combined with a range of meditative art styles, from Zen Gardening to Sumi-e inks and Indian Buddhist art. Easy to use, flowing and set to a gorgeous and serene soundscape by Winterpark. Best played with headphones. Players guide energy by moving rocks around the mystic garden, setting them in place and watching the energy settle into its new flow.

Mixels Rush

Android Police coverage: Combine Cute Little Critters And Their Powers In Cartoon Network's Mixels Rush For $2.99

LEGO and Cartoon Network both tend to make solid mobile games for kids without any IAP gimmicks, and now they've joined forces. Mixels Rush is a runner starring the oddly personified LEGO creatures. Players use a variety of different "mixed-up" characters and tools like paint buckets and magnets to advance across the stage while running from something called "Nixels." Get the right combo going and you can make your own giant mech. Mixels Rush is $3 with no in-app purchases.

Use awesome new Mixels and make crazy combinations to beat the annoying Nixels in Mixels Rush. Major Nixel has unleashed a Nixelstorm of epic proportions. Help the heroic Mixels overcome obstacles and stay ahead of the storm by combining powers and using special items. Meet brand-new Mixel characters from tribes both new and old, including the Frosticons, Klinkers, Orbitons, Glowkies, Lixers, Infernites, Munchos, Glorp Corp and Weldos.

Star Trek™ Trexels

Android Police coverage: Start Saving Your Latinum: Star Trek Trexels Turns The Final Frontier Into A Pixelated Free-To-Play Management Game

Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Mediocre. Its five-minute mission: to juxtapose classic Star Trek tropes with the nonsensical 8-bit art style, to overlay the classic mythos with management sim busywork, to boldly ask you to pay out the nose like a Ferengi bartering over tulaberry wine. Star Trek's first official game on Android is beyond underwhelming - you might as well play through Star Command again.

Get ready to explore the Galaxy like no one has before, as you journey across a vast galactic map. YOU decide how your ship is built. Choose from dozens of different room types and modifications, and put those red shirts to work. Assign officers to key posts, train them to increase their abilities, and send them on exciting Away Missions. A temporal rift in the Expanse has caused old foes and surprising new allies to find their way into this unexplored region of space.

Atlantic Fleet

Atlantic Fleet is a high-end WWII naval battle sim that makes no apologies for its meticulous approach. It's pricey at ten bucks, but based on the long list of features, it's certainly worth the cost of admission. Several single-player campaigns, individual historical battles, a battle editor, and a "hot potato" single-device multiplayer mode add value, and lovingly simulated real ships, submarines, and planes should tickle the fancies of military history buffs.

Atlantic Fleet is a turn-based tactical and strategic simulation of the Battle of the Atlantic during World War II. Take command of surface ships, submarines as well as carrier and land based aircraft in a deadly struggle for control of the shipping lanes.

  • Unique blend of deep strategic planning combined with quick tactical decisions
  • Play as the Royal Navy and her allies or Kriegsmarine (German navy)
  • Up to 10 versus 10 ships in combat
  • Individually saved games for each campaign and faction
  • Multiplayer Hotseat for Single Battles

Interlocked is a series of three-dimensional sliding block puzzles. Standpoint

Standpoint uses the orientation switch mechanic as the basis for its puzzle gameplay, but unlike most of the similar titles we've seen thus far, it does so in a first-person 3D view. While the presentation is relatively simple, the game purports to be a representation of the classical stages of grief. If you've been aching for one of the new crop of introspective puzzlers for your phone, give it a go. Note: the developer says that the IAP tag in the Play Store is an error.

A labyrinth fades into view; a space you control but that holds you. Completely lost with nowhere else you could be. Standpoint is a first-person puzzle platformer where the player possesses the ability to change the orientation of the world. Explore the labyrinth-like environment, solving puzzles and collecting secrets, in order to overcome the stages of Grief. And ask yourself, do the narrator's cryptic clues to the world hide some deeper sentiment?

Tallowmere

Tallowmere is an action-platformer in the style of Ghosts and Goblins. The art is an interesting mix of standard Flash and 8-bit characters, though the backgrounds are a little drab. You can upgrade your skills and equipment as you chop through a wide variety of enemies. The game is $3 with no in-app purchases, and controller support is included.

Indulge Lady Tallowmere and see how far through her lovingly violent dungeons you can delve in this 2D indie action roguelike-inspired platformer. New rooms are procedurally generated every time you play, meaning you'll have to be on your guard for every randomly-placed enemy, elite, boss, and treasure chest you'll come across. Each room gets progressively bigger, harder, and more rewarding the further you go. Use the on-screen controls to command your hero, or connect a controller to play.

Tiny Dangerous Dungeons

Tiny Dangerous Dungeons wears its inspiration on its sleeve, from its Castlevania-style gameplay and setting to its greyscale Game Boy color palette. All of the classic exploration-based platformer elements are here, from upgradeable weapons, to 2D puzzles, to "Chiptune" music. Anyone who's old enough to remember stealing AA batteries from the living room remote will find something to like in this free title.

Hop into a classic Game Boy inspired metroidvania adventure with the little treasure hunter Timmy. Explore a huge dungeon, collect hidden power-ups and gain new skills to aid you on your quest. Can Timmy survive the tiny dangerous dungeons, and find the presumably huge treasure?

  • Game Boy inspired, stylish and retro monochrome art style.
  • Explore a huge, open dungeon. Solve puzzles, defeat creepy creatures.
  • Collect loot. Find the hidden ability upgrades to open new passages.

High Rise

In High Rise, you play the most reckless building contractor known to man. Not only do you work on adding new stories to an already-occupied apartment building, you drop them in from some nether-realm... people and all. The one-touch interface stacks new apartments on top of the others until they inevitably fall over, Jenga-style, to the accompaniment of Wilhelm screams. $1 removes advertising.

HIGH RISE is an intense and challenging one touch stacking / building game. Touch and hold the screen to move your drop indicator, let go of the screen to drop a piece of building. Try to stack building pieces on top of each other without your structure falling over.

Nihilumbra

Nihilumbra is a minimalist platformer-puzzle game that takes its inspiration from titles like Badlands. You control a shape-shifting, uh, thing from the void, which is trying to escape the nothing that follows it through the world. Various colors can be used to move past obstacles, allowing the basic gameplay to expand into some interesting new areas. Nihilumbra is a free download with a single $3 in-app purchase to unlock the whole thing.

Discover the beautiful world of Nihilumbra and join Born on his adventure to find himself whilst trying to escape from his inevitable curse. Born was created from the absolute nothingness: The Void. Wrassling

In Wrassling, the point of this pseudo-retro bout is to throw the opposing wrasslers (who look a lot like foosball figures) out of the ring. That basically involves tilting your body and flailing your arms like a Rock-Em Sock-Em robot that's flown off the peg. It plays a lot like QWOP as a 2D fighter, so if you're a fan of games that are intentionally and hilariously terrible, give it a try. Wrassling is free with no in-app purchases.

Wrassling is the national sport of Slamdovia, champion Wrasslers are regarded as the strongest athletes in the world. Many will attempt to master Wrassling and even more will fail. In Wrassling there is an old saying "never give up even if both your arms fall off, but maybe think about it"

Rush Star - Bike Adventure

Rush Star is an endless runner with a pretty typical setup, but the unique and chaotic stages earn it a spot on this list. The femme fatale star drives her motorcycle through everything from crowded city streets to lava-filled caverns to... a patch of evil vegetables. The over-the-top presentation is more entertaining than the three-lane setup might suggest, and while it's a free-to-play title, the in-app purchases aren't as bad as most freemium games.

Craving for the thrill of extreme speed race? Rush Star is your answer. Meet the unconventional racing adventure game and explore areas you’ve never even imagined of racing in. Dash through all kinds of exciting scenes - rainy jungles, railroads in the midst boiling-hot magma, blizzard-striken villages, you name it. Hop on the top-notch bike HOVER STAR 9 and leave your trace on the land that has never been conquered. There is no better time for it than now.

FPV Freerider

OK, I can understand the appeal of a plane or helicopter simulator - those are aspirational experiences that most people simply won't be able to have. But what's the point of simulating a drone flight? Drones are easy enough to find, and they're less expensive than, say, a high-end smartphone and all the controllers that this surprisingly robust sim supports. To each his own, I suppose. Here's a free demo version.

Fly (and crash.) all you want regardless of rain, wind, sleet or snow. Selectable between first person view (FPV) and line of sight (LOS) flying. Includes self-levelling and acro mode. Custom settings for input rates, camera and physics. Touchscreen is default input. If your device supports USB OTG and you have the right cable you can try to use a USB gamepad/controller for better control. Physical controllers are configurable between mode 1,2,3 and 4.

Feed The Bear

Feed the Bear is sort of a single-player take on Scorched Earth, except instead of enemy tanks, you're hitting a bear, and instead of deadly nuclear bombs, you're firing tomatoes. Each level gives you a limited amount of food to use. You'll need to be strategic: larger food can clear more obstacles, but if you use all of it up, you might not have enough to satiate the bear's appetite. Presumably he eats his fuzzy helpers when they fail. $1 removes the intrusive advertising.

Mighty King Bear is lazy. Too lazy to hunt, too lazy to get his own food. Instead, he bullies the other forest creatures into feeding him their food. Of course, you don’t want to get too close to him, in case you end up on the menu. So instead you fire the fruit straight into his giant jaws using a makeshift cannon. That’s not as simple as it sounds, given all the obstacles in the way. But using movable objects and a variety of helpful animals, you can always find a way of feeding King Bear.

The Next Arrow

This little logic game challenges players to move horizontally or vertically across the board without breaking the chain of accessible arrows. (Watch the video.) It's an interesting concept and an original one, which is a niche that's seriously lacking on the Play Store at the moment.

What will be your Next Arrow? Challenge your brain by creating the longest chain possible in the deceptively difficult world of the arrows. Think and elaborate strategies to survive and reach the first rank. Push your anticipation and planning capacities further than anything before.

Knight's Move

When I was a kid, I often found myself jumping across square supermarket tiles in the 3-1 movement of a chess knight. This is my kind of puzzle, then: you only get a knight, and the only goal is to progress across the various stages using that single L-shaped move. There are quite a few games in the Play store based on this idea, but this one includes a multiplayer mode (local and online) with some interesting extras.

In multiplayer mode, you and your rival must work to capture squares and trap the other player on the board. Strategy, patience, and a well-timed boost will ensure your victory. Defeat your opponents, and take your rightful place on the top of the leaderboard.

  • Multiplayer Mode: Challenge your friend on the standard square board, or the more challenging circular, and Singularity boards. Trap your opponent to win the game.
  • Boosts: Use boosts during multiplayer to turn the tables on your opponent
  • Local Multiplayer: Battle your friend on the same device in local multiplayer.

Prison Escape Puzzle

Prison Escape is a varied collection of themed puzzles centered around, well, escaping a prison. It's a surprisingly competent effort from Play Store rookie Big Giant, and what's even more surprising is that the game is completely free with no in-app purchases. Reviews say that this one isn't long, but beggars can't be choosers.

You find yourself locked in an old city prison. Solve puzzles and find items that will aid you in your escape. Challenge yourself with this short but fun puzzle game.

• Tricky and challenging puzzles.

• Gorgeous graphics .

• It's FREE.

• No signup's required, just download and install.

Temple Toad

How well would Angry Birds' slingshot mechanic work in a regular platformer? Download Temple Toad and find out. This is another one of those infuriating games where the main draw is its frustration, since getting from one platform to the next is an exercise in trial and error. Mini Racing Adventures

You'll still hit the free-to-play grinding wall at some point if you want to be competitive online.

But for some reason the farm sim sub-genre is booming - here's one to compete with the popular Farming Simulator series. This one includes "over 50 vehicles and tools," and also in-app purchases on top of its $2 price tag, though they don't seem too terrible.

Harvest fields, raise animals, walk around your farm to manage buildings, drive combines, tractors, trucks and semis and master over 50 farm tools and implements. Your goal is to build the most valuable farm. Compare your stats with friends and become the best farmer. Take advantage of changing economy and sell your products at the highest price. Expand your farm by buying new fields and upgrading your buildings.

Lara Croft: Relic Run

Tomb Raider is inspired by Indiana Jones. So is Temple Run. "Why not combine the two" seems to be the thinking behind this endless runner starring the most famous archeologist in gaming. While the graphics are impressive and some of the turret shooter sections are novel, Square-Enix isn't showing much that we haven't seen before in this licensed mobile game. Your cash might be better spent on the Android version of the original than in-app purchases for Relic Run.

Lara Croft: Relic Run is the all new action adventure for nostalgic Lara Croft fans. When a shadowy conspiracy threatens the world, only Lara Croft is equipped to unearth the truth. Jets - Flying Adventure

This free-to-play runner ticks all the usual marks of the genre, but its interesting 3D movement and charming art style make it worth a look. You play as an inexplicably huge paper airplane flying through the streets of various world cities. Predictably Jets has a bunch of social networking hooks for its leaderboards in-app purchases... some of which can be had free for frequent fliers on Royal Dutch Airlines. Weird.

Vrooooom… Try your pilot skills and navigate your paper plane through a cardboard world in the awesome flying game Jets. Watch out for trams and boats along the canals of Amsterdam. Try the fun-packed single player mode or challenge your friends in the multiplayer mode. Have you ever wanted to fly a paper plane over the canals? This is your chance. The first endless flyer missions of Jets' are set in a unique papercraft version of Amsterdam, the home-base of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.

Francy Droo: Mother-in-Law

Francy Droo takes that familiar adventure game setup, infuses some Adult Swim-style humor, and wraps it in MS Paint-quality graphics and (oddly) full voice acting. It's definitely not for everyone, but if your YouTube profile includes at least one emoticon, you might get a kick out of it.

Carla Gomez is overbearing, uncooperative, and on the last nerve of basically everyone at her daughter's wedding—so when she goes missing, leaving behind only a poorly-spelled ransom note (or possibly an order for takeout; it's hard to tell), everyone is a suspect. It's up to substitute bridesmaid and kind-of, sort-of detective Francine "Francy" Droo (and her awkward friend Katie) to figure out whodunit, before the wedding bells can ring.

The Frumbers

Frumbers is a unique endless runner that incorporates a little bit of math. Collect plus signs and your animate fruit number will increase, hit a minus sign and it will decrease. Get caught by a zero (represented as oranges and strawberries, for some reason) and you're completely reset. Will the novelty be enough to get you to cough up for some IAP? Probably not.

The world where the hero is itself the result. Where your worst enemy is a zero pumpkin. Where tomatoes shoot minuses at you. In the world of Frumbers, all you have to do is to not become a zero. Just don't touch the pumpkins. They will turn you into a zero. Don't fall into pits and don't get minuses. That’s it. Now let yourself in and take your best shot. Score your highest number.

Mining Truck

Mining Truck takes the basic idea of Snuggle Truck (and its less politically correct version, Smuggle Truck) and replaces the primary vehicle with one of those enormous industrial dumpers. The concept isn't new, but the ridiculous 2D stages are, so download it if you're looking for a fix. It's just too bad that the Android device compatibility is so spotty.

It takes a monster truck — and a beast of a driver — to haul rocks across this rough terrain. That’s your job: to move a load across craggy mountains without dumping it all along the way, and the clock is running out. Ever seen a 10-ton truck jump across an open abyss? Better open the throttle, friend… if you want to deliver that load on time.

First Touch Soccer 2015

Tired of the crazy social and IAP gimmicks in EA's soccer games? Well here's an alternative from indie developer First Touch... that also features crazy social and IAP gimmicks. Hey, if you can't beat them. At least First Touch Soccer attempts to recreate the entire sport, instead of focusing on finger-friendly minigames or team management.

First Touch Soccer 2015 is here, and it’s better than ever. Crammed full of amazing features, modes, stunning graphics and fluid gameplay, this year’s edition is not to be missed. Take control of your team on and off the field in Manager Mode. Sign new players, negotiate contracts & fully customise your club’s stadium with our unique stadium editor. Plancon: Space Conflict

Herocraft's latest mobile game is a mix of twin-stick shooters (a la Geometry Wars) and a larger top-down space conflict. The mix of 3D graphics and 2D gameplay in Plancon works well, and the huge playable area and ship upgrade mechanics give good reason to continue through the endless void. Unfortunately it's hard to look past the premium $3 price and $100 in-app purchases - developers, you can't have your cake and eat it too.

Damn aliens – they have nothing better to do than attack the human race. Time to take control of a spaceship and wage your own war against these extraterrestrial roaches. You'll fly a piece of space junk at first, but after a dozen or so successful missions you'll make enough cash for a hardcore battleship. Now it's up to you to put together a bold team and equip your ship the best lasers, blasters, missiles, and whatnot available on the black market. The aliens will regret ever messing with Earth.

Ire:Blood Memory

Ire is a hack-and-slash fantasy RPG, and it's brutal. The little spurts of blood in your usual dungeon crawler don't hold up to the display of gore in Blood Memory - it reminds me of a top-down version of Dark Souls with a bit of illegal steroids thrown in. For a game that takes its inspiration from console and PC titles, it's just a shame that there are such expensive in-app purchases. The idea of "hardcore" difficulty kind of loses its edge when you can pay real money for better gear.

Tenbirds is an independent game development studio. Ire, inspired by hardcore Japanese A/RPGs, is our first game. THE day of atonement is nigh. Memory has fallen and the world is broken. Seabeard

Seabeard mixes the "snowglobe" worldbuilding of Animal Crossing with the over-used town builder genre, adds a pinch of dungeon crawling, then smashes in a bunch of vaguely pirate-themed activities for good measure. It's become something of a hit on iOS, and its appealing graphical visual style and music are probably why. Unfortunately that sunny exterior hides predictably insane $100 in-app purchases.

Follow in the footsteps of the great captain Seabeard and discover a giant ocean teeming with islands to explore. Live life at your own pace and choose your own path - whether you have ambitions of being a world-famous chef, fearless archaeologist, or deadly warrior, you can realise those dreams. Discover a rich, charming world that you can jump into anytime, anywhere. The oceans of Seabeard are filled with surprises around every corner.

Stan Lee's Hero Command

Someone call Stan Lee's agent - he got out of his habitat zone when he went to report for his Ant-Man cameo. It looks like he's created a free-to-play "superhero" top-down RPG... wherein at least one of the playable characters is a nonagenarian publisher and pop culture figure.

Welcome to Stan Lee’s Hero Command, starring Stan Lee himself as the leader of Hero Command. Prepare yourself for an action packed thrill ride as Stan dispatches missions to his pantheon of heroes in a fight to save the world. Discover and become new playable heroes across exciting scenarios, with new content released regularly. Play as Stan Lee himself. Help Stan sneak through his missions using his trusty invisibility watch. Avoid enemies at all costs.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Map

The Witcher 3 is the latest high-profile RPG to rock the PC and console world, and it's not without a few forays into mobile gaming, either. But this isn't a stand-alone game, it's a highly detailed and officially-licensed world map. Load this up on your tablet as what's-his-name tramps through the fantasy world, and you'll never want for directions. It's surprisingly reasonable too at just $4.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Official Map Companion is the official digital companion for the game. This app contains interactive maps for the entire world of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, complete with callouts for all the major important items and quest locations in the game. Locate all the signposts, chests, points of interest, merchants and more. Utilize the app's built-in functionality to track your progress as you complete quests and collect items. Pinch-to-zoom the maps to see the world in greater detail. A great companion to use while playing the game.
