Google teased an upcoming release of the Play Store with Material Design element at I/O last month, and we actually got a pretty good look at the new version ourselves last week. Starting today, that new version, 4.9.13, is rolling out, and we've got the APK for you, as always. Take a look at this quick visual overview of the changes (we've got more images down below as well), and be sure to read Liam's post on the update for all the details.

What's New?

This Play Store update marks the addition of a brand-new Material Design layout for app and other content pages, and the rollout has just begun, according to Googler Kirill Grouchnikov.

App and content pages

Basically, everything you'll find in this post is here - Liam did an excellent job breaking down the various new elements of this update. 4.9.13 marks what we can only assume is an as-yet uncompleted shift to a Material layout, starting with app and other content pages. The basic navigation and most other parts of the Play Store seem untouched, though the changes to content pages are pretty huge.

The new app pages really are the story here - they've been redesigned from the ground up with new animations, a totally revamped layout that more heavily features +1s on content, and generally just looks a whole lot cleaner. I could go into exactly what's different, but that'd be kind of hard, because everything on app and content pages seems to have changed.

A few things we've noticed are app descriptions now go full-screen, and changelogs live in this area as well. App changelogs on the device Play Store are now only visible for apps you have installed, where they will appear in place of the app description (good! efficient!). For apps you don't have installed, you'll have to open the full description to see the changelog (less efficient!).

Video trailers now sit at the top of every listing that has one, instead of in the image gallery. App details like the date of last update, APK size, version, "Top Developer" text, and content are now in the full description section of apps, not on the main listing page. Permissions are also now found in the description area, as well as at the bottom of the listing via the permission details button.

Privacy policy and the visit [developer] webpage links no longer show the full URL of the page. Finally, the dedicated share button in the top bar has been removed. Sharing is now found via a button below the featured reviews for content, as is the +1 button (an interesting choice). Instead of +1s and shares, this new UI seems to emphasize reviews and star rating ahead of Google+, though your circle members who have +1ed a piece of content do still appear right alongside the star rating and review count in their little bubble avatars.

Both could easily share the floor together if Apple wasn't so snooty and if Google play store wants to be on a level ground with I APP store then what would it hurt ??

    An important difference:
    1. Installed apps: now only show the changelog, not the description (until you click through)
    2. Not installed apps: now only show the promo text which is 0-80 characters (until you click through).

I sort of like 1, but not 2.

    • Daeshaun Griffiths

I see what you mean. Its nice getting a full screen description but getting out of it feels clunky.
it's like an entirely new page.

edit: idk, i get used to it every app i go to.

    • Armando Rodriguez
      • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

What's New shows up in the app view for those apps you have installed, and after tapping the READ MORE button, it shows up for both installed and not installed apps. Of course, as long as What's New is available for a given app.

        • Armando Rodriguez

oh ok, I missunderstood your comment then.

    • mariano zorrilla

Cover promote images are back again! YAY!

    • WinSuk

And also not the full changelog until you click through and scroll past the giant description... Awesome.

    • Thomas Wong

But for 1, when I see the What's New section, and I click the "read more" button, actually I expect to see the What's New info right away. But what happens now is that I see the Description first, and then I have to scroll down for the What's New info.

      • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

Yeah, that could definitely be optimized.

    • EdLessard

I get the theory behind this, but when I press on the truncated "What's New", I don't see what's new. I see the item description and have to scroll down all the way to see what's new. Confusing

I just got around to updating my Google Play apk and that's my #1 gripe as well.

I always check the changelog before updating, and now it's become a slightly bigger hassle because if have to click and scroll to find the complete changelog.

  • Felipe Pimenta

For those who disable Auto Update for certain apps, make sure you disable it again.

  • DemandTrialByCombat

Someone please post that gif :)

  • Fabian Pineda

I'm kind of bummed that the initial PS screen didn't get any revamp of any sorts. I guess we're just being dogfed and not entirely materialized.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

No, this is not dogfooding, this is a public release. They decided to release it in chunks leading up to v5.0, which is better than holding out IMO.

      • Fabian Pineda

What I meant to say is that yeah, they're giving us small tastings of what material is/will be. But I still feel bummed that this is what they chose to start with, rather than the navigation menus, and home screens on apps which seem to be what lacks the most in non Google Apps in terms of the current design language adoption.

        • http://www.androidpolice.com/ David Ruddock

Google: The Company That Can Never Do Literally Anything Exactly Right According To Some People On The Internet (TM).

          • Fabian Pineda

That's really unfair to comment, David. Specially since my concern is rather justified, given the inconsistency that developers pose on the entire ecosystem. So my claim isn't against "The Company That Can Never Do Literally Anything Exactly Right According To Some People On The Internet (TM)" but against how MD is being/could be spread. But maybe another Google App will receive an update showing Material Design on start screens and navigation and my current concern would be rendered moot, which I hope.

          • http://kittyanarchy.net/ Ashley Davis

I don't really recognize David, is he new? Either way he doesn't seem like he's going out of his way to be much more than your standard forum troll. Still, fwiw I agree with you.

          • Fabian Pineda

David is part of AP's staff. I really like him because he has a great sense of humour and his unusually hairy arms make me feel like I'm a normal person. I guess I came up to him like a regular whiner, but I assure everyone I'm not... Not that much anyway.

          • http://www.androidpolice.com/ David Ruddock

            HAIRY ARMS UNITE

    • EvilLordFluffy

I think you might mean spoon fed :)

    • Anthony Tyson

Yeah it's really jarring and makes the flow terrible.

  • windmark

Wow I love it! Now, I just want every app to update to this design.

  • remister

My first touch with Material Design. Not bad. This will definately do until official release until L.
On a side note, ZippyShare got caught in the malware warning folder.

  • nebula

The new material stuff combined with some parts of the old design looks kinda weird to me.

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ David Ruddock

Yeah it's a bit clashy for sure. But it'll get rectified... eventually.

      • Crispin Swickard

Being this is 4.9 it will probably be 5.0, and come out with L which will probably also be 5.0. they do tend to line up the version numbers like that now, and again. If not the same time as L shortly before, or after.

  • http://gplus.to/mbirth Markus Birth

Why is this manual version check there when it doesn't do anything until my device won the "staged rollout lottery"? The Play Store checks for updates on every launch anyways...

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

It's basically placebo and does nothing for staged updates, which are the updates we all care about. Maybe it speeds up just a tiny bit when you wipe or start using a new device with an outdated version.

    • Anthony Tyson

      Agreed. Pointless.

    • Ed Chen

That's odd. It worked for me. I tapped it and it said downloading new version and now I'm on 4.9.13.

  • Fatal1ty_93_RUS

Well this definitely looks better than the mockup from the rumor article

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

It wasn't a mockup. Unless you mean the single shot from I/O.

      • Fatal1ty_93_RUS

Wait, what was it then? Prototype/concept art by google?

        • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

An earlier version while development was still in progress?

          • Fatal1ty_93_RUS

            Ah, yes, that thing

          • mgamerz

It was a mock up I think. It was the one with all the wasted tablet space.

          • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

            I assure you it wasn't a mockup.

          • miri

It was a 7" tablet in landscape. It's going to be cramped no matter what you do.

          • Simon Belmont

It wasn't a mockup. I remember them actually making a note that it was the real deal this time, and not a mockup.

What we have here, while improved, still doesn't strike me as full Material design. Somewhere between Holo and Material.

  • joser116

    This is unreal

  • Spasillium

It looks even better with TSB

I really like this but I have no idea what "TSB" means. Could someone elaborate for those of us who don't know?

      • Renan Lazarotto

My guess is that it is tinted status bar or something

      • https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=iWizard Bikram Agarwal

Tinted Status Bar. It's a module in XPosed.

  • Kévin Cocchi

  • Justin Hess

Where are the download sizes? I've scrolled up and down and I can't find it. It might mean little to others here but it's nice knowing whether I can download something on the go or whether I should wait for a Wi-Fi connect

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ David Ruddock

      Under the detailed description area.

      • Justin Hess

Yeah, just looked around a bit more and I found it. Still, it's something I think needs to be immediately apparent. Such basic info requires that much

        • http://www.androidpolice.com/ David Ruddock

I can kind of get on board with that but at the same time, Material Design 101 basically seems to be "REMOVE ALL UNNECESSARY TEXT."

Which I can also get on board with. Clutter is a nuisance.

          • Justin Hess

Possibly drawing this out needlessly but I fall in the former camp.

I don't think file size info is clutter.

In terms of Material Design in a broad sense, Google needs to work out what is important and what is needless clutter.
Some text informing me of what I'm downloading is not clutter and can be given in an aesthetically pleasing way.

Material design is a fine premise (overall I quite like it) but in terms of basic services, design needs to be function enveloped in pleasing form.

            But the function comes first.

I am however, potentially nitpicking the hell out of this :)

          • Stoffers

Personally I don't really care about file size. I tend to have too much empty space on my phone anyways. 17.38GB free right now.

  • Nathan Walters

Overall I love it, but there's one annoying thing: clicking to read all reviews or opening photos in full-screen and then returning to the main listing will scroll you all the way to the top. I really see no logical reason why they would do that...

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ David Ruddock

      That sounds like a bug.

      • Nathan Walters

Yeah. It looks like it happens whenever the activity resumes; e.g. scrolling down, opening the task switcher, and switching immediately back to the play store does the same thing. This should be an easy fix though.

  • Mert Çelen

Just installed, working great and looking amazing
Thanks ap team as always :)

  • Arte’Vius Hardin

Loving the new look! The addition of a Listen button on the album pages is something I've been hoping would be added for a while. Sound Search>Play Store>Play Music is still one more step than I'd like, but it's better than the old method.

    • Shawn

If you're talking about the "Listen" button on the Play Store listing for album, that has been around for awhile. (I use Sound Search & All Access).

      • Arte’Vius Hardin

Must have been a bug on my end then. Sound search always took me to the store to purchase. I'd end up having to search the album in Play Music. The listen button was there for music I've purchased, but not for everything else. Basically how it currently is on the desktop version of the Play Store.

  • Damian

Some things are better, some worse, some stays the same - I still can't remove multiple apps at once from My Apps section. Kirill, please, bring back that X button.

  • http://stalk.mkstvns.com/ Mike Stevens

Fuxake... this is the second time in two weeks I've installed a new Google Play APK fine but still had the older interface. What's up with that? /noob.

    • http://stalk.mkstvns.com/ Mike Stevens

Ooohh I see now, the staged nature of the update means having the APK doesn't necessarily guarantee anything. Poop.

      • noyourewrong

Nope, once you have the APK and install it you get the features.

The last time there was an update to the play store it was a really small update. Some things changed in the background and thats it. Nothing on the UI side of things changed there.

        • http://stalk.mkstvns.com/ Mike Stevens

In that case I've got no idea what I've done wrong. It's not rocket science, afaik. I've sideloaded APKs before and it's been straightforward. Installing this one has done nothing and I've still got the 'old' design...

  • https://plus.google.com/u/0/115605168398121887465/about Anzhel Bozhinov

Installed 4.9 on my Gingerbread (CyanogenMod 7.2) phone. Play Store looks identically as 4.8. :)

    • Sam Del Valle

      Gingerbread? Bro....time for that upgrade

      • Guest

        You tell me...
If I did have the cash for a new phone, I wouldn't be on Gingerbread either, trust me ;)

Until then, the land of bad design it is.

I love my Atrix, and CyanogenMod 7.2 is the last stable version. Also I have Sony Xperia Z1 Compact (CyanogenMod 11), but it isn't so cool as Atrix 4G =)

  • SVem26

I think this will shame devs into updating their banner images into something good looking rather than a Plain blackground with the icon and some text..

I like this.. First step towards beautification.

  • Bojan Tomic

Oh, dear lord, it is so preeeeeeeettyyyy! *________*

  • david coffey

Really like it. Hope they make the main app page and stuff material as well. Great start.

  • AbbyZFresh

I hope developers take note and input Material Design correctly before L releases.

    • miri

Technically they can't and even this isn't Material design. It's just Holo with some of Material's metrics.

  • Barry Wilhelm

Odd. This is being pushed out and neither of my two devices have received 4.8.22 yet.

    • david coffey

I've always noticed that once I've installed apks over pushed updates, I no longer receive pushed updates and have to continue installing apks. Not sure if that's your issue though, just throwing my thoughts out there.

  • BBpost

It's still impossible to search for a comic and have them show up in any order. You have to page through an entire collection to figure out the latest release. As always I give an easy example: Search for The Walking Dead. Or go to The Walking Dead section. See if you can very quickly figure out the latest book, or when the next one will be released. I can do this on every other online e-book store.

  • brararsh

How to +1 in store now?

    • alessiolarva

Simply tap on the number of +1 displayed! If it is red, you have already put yours.

      • brararsh

        It's nowhere in my app.

        • brararsh

          Got it down there.

  • vyktorsouza

how on earth do every app have headers already?????

    • miri

Back in the Android Market days there was a thing called "feature graphics". You packaged them with your app so they'd have a banner to display if/when your app got featured (and your app wouldn't get featured without a graphic which is why most everyone has them). They dropped that concept in the Play Store re-branding and are just now getting around to re-purposing them as header images now. At least, that's my understanding.

      • https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=iWizard Bikram Agarwal

Not exactly true. Before the current design of the web play store went live, the "Feature graphic" used to be shown as a banner at the top of each app's page; separate from the app thumbnails.

        • miri

Forgot about that. Kinda hated the old web store, hardly went there.

  • Kurama91

AWESOME. Thanks so much AP Guys!

  • Pootis Man

Nice update to the Play Store. I'm really liking it!

  • sam

All I want from Google is a better search algorithm. I am searching an app store not the web. I enter an app name and there comes dozens of results that have no single common thing with the app I am looking for.

    • Pootis Man

      Very true.

    • Jadephyre

It is also annoying that the Playstore limits the search results to a measly 250 Items. If I want to look for Icon Packs, I have to do it on my PC and find the exact name for it if it doesn't come up in the search on my phone.

    • omegavesko

The best part of which is that Google Search is actually better at searching for apps than the Play Store search is.

    • Ezzy

And where in the hell are all the search giant's additional search criteria, sorting terms etc. Why is this so utterly pointlessly simplified?
Same goes for Google Play Music/AA; albums and singles are mashed up together and I can't sort ANYTHING.
Wish Google would get a grip on its products at some point...I'm really losing hope.

  • Aooga

This force closes quite a bit on the S5 with 4.4.2.

  • 4wallz

That's a good looking update. Looks a lot like the SMS app from Klinker Apps, Evolve SMS. I wish all the apps would take the time to convert to the new look. Love it.

  • alessiolarva

Mmh now, during an app download, it shows % and size only on the notification, not in the app.

  • https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=iWizard Bikram Agarwal

Here's my quick take on this -

    Bad -
    * 2 points of entries for ratings/reviews.
    * 2 points of entries for "Similar apps".
    * 2 points of entries for "Add to wishlist".
    * Minimal description on the main app page - to the point of being non existent.
    * For apps you don't have installed, you'll have to open the full description to see the changelog. (As AP already mentioned)
    * Place in page is not retained if you move back and forth in an app's page (other than description).
    * Too much white space at the bottom.

    Good -
    * On full description page - swipe down to go back to app page.
    * Video at the header uses "Feature graphics" as the thumbnail / background and not the shitty random video thumbnail that you might have.

    Wow looks good.

  • Noob

Google really needs to fix the photos in that that show for an app preview. The duplicates just annoy me.

  • Bryan Gutiérrez

Love the new UI, too bad it force closes on me when I hit the top left icon (you know, the one you click to access the settings, "my apps" and the other stuff). For now I will have to downgrade to 4.8.22 :(

  • jtc276

"I'm a material store in a material world."

  • Guest

They still haven't fixed that bug where the image carrousel have all the images repeated thrice?

  • guest

this makes me want to buy something... i dont know what ........... yet lml good update

  • Denis

spectacular. store home page screams for redesign now, however.

  • Chris

Really doesn't seem all that different to me...not sure what the big deal is.

    • Segroukin
      • Chris

Seriously I don't get all the excitement. It looks neat and that's about it.........

    • tim242

Did you click on an app??

      • Chris

        Yeah...big deal.

        • tim242

          What were you expecting?

          • Chris

Basically what I saw, which is why I'm wondering why everyone seems to be losing their shit over this. I mean it's cool, but we've already seen it, and it doesn't even add functionality...just looks different than before. The market is still a mess.

          • tim242

That I definitely agree with. I just thought you were not seeing a difference

  • gokh

    How is this Material? ?

    • tim242

Waiting for controller supported games section for months...

  • Ryan Steddy

I kind of wish they hadn't released this. Google should have waited until every single on of their apps was ready and then released Material Design/Android L as a whole.
Right now this is just yet another inconsistency in Google apps.
(Although it does look really nice).

  • https://plus.google.com/+TomErlandsen/posts?hl=en Tom Erlandsen

    Oh my god it's beautiful.

  • http://gamenology1.wordpress.com/ Ahnaf Mahmud

    And I'm still on 4.6.17

      Nvm got 4.8.20 yesterday

  • James Zhangya

Oh, That is too perfect. From now , i can buy the best hdmi converter on google paly store and not on http://goo.gl/24H7RH ,I like hdmi converter very much !

  • http://www.thejunglephoto.pw Thejungle

This is not material design, people..

    • Aaron

I agree: it's a nice toward Material, but they're still in transition I think.

      • http://www.thejunglephoto.pw Thejungle

Yup. First of all it is nowhere close to similar to MD guidelines and scrapbooks published after L announcement. It is some kind of transition, that's right.

  • http://www.mradeveci.com/ Ahmet Deveci

Thanks for always providing us with the latest updates and heads up! Good work :)

  • Thom Parslow

For me its not 100% stable, flickng through apps to scope the new theme and it closes itself a lot, generally when scrolling through app info. Its weird I'm using an s4 on 4.4.2. Wasn't worth it at all.

  • Matthias Van Wambeke

    This looks great!
Note: is it me or did they change the "share" icon?

    • Niels

      They did.Good catch ;-)

  • Aniket Patni

This is so pretty, I really..aaaaaa! That pixelated Search Icon! Cannot unsee x_x

  • Lars Jeppesen

Thanks for the APK, app looks insanely good

  • Thomas Wong

Nobody tells me what to do, "Build version" button!

    • irfan

what to do with build version ? i already tap on it but it said the latest version already installed.

      • Simon Belmont

Same. Unless it's actually actively being rolled out to my devices, that button never does anything.

In fact, I can't recall a time where it EVER did anything except say it already had the latest version. Kind of a gyp.

        • irfan

so how do u upgrade ? just install the apk manually like install other apps ? and if i install this version, can i still get the latest playstore if google update it ?

          • Simon Belmont

You install the APK that Android Police provided above. That's about the only way.

The alternative is just to be patient and wait for the upate to get pushed to your device. Sometimes that takes weeks.

  • Exay Bachay

I love it!!! now is much easier, at least for smartphone, will try on tablet later.

  • http://www.smsnetwork.org/ Mikael Jakobsson

    Looks great.

  • omegavesko

No, guidelines for everyone. The entire reason they're called *guidelines* is that you're allowed to deviate from them if you deem the difference is beneficial to your app. This is as true for Google itself as it is for third-party developers.

  • Wesley Modderkolk

Looks great, much better than what I thought when I saw the previews.

However, the top image that turns into the action bar is seriously giving me issues with OCD, Can't stand that the statusbar will still be green when the action bar isn't shown.

  • Simon Belmont

Funny. None of my or my wife's devices have even gotten the bug fixer update of Google Play Store version 4.8.22.

Looks interesting. I'll have to test on both a tablet and phone to get the full effect.

  • DonEmu

    Not laws, still guidelines.

If you compare the material design apps google has already released( eg. Google Docs, Keep, Sheets, etc.) and even the apps in their slideshow of Android L like the new Gallery app and music player to the templates in the Google Material Design Guidelines, you would realise that the guidelines are pretty much the bare minimum of what the apps are supposed to be like.

The point is to give a generalised template for all apps to follow. Not to make every single app look exactly the same except for their content.

It is as true for their in-house development as it is for 3rd parties.

  • Clubber

The only thing I wish was different is the placement of the share button. I liked having it at the top for easy access.

Now it's been demoted and out next to a seemingly redundant bookmark button. Hard to believe, but I actually use the share button quite a bit.

  • TheLastAngel

It's pretty and all, but it has the usual Google bullshit oversight of not remembering your position when going back to the previous screen.

  • DonEmu

Gonna be loved by the everyday user who probably doesn't even take a look at things like permissions.etc.

Gonna be an inconvenience to the type of user that knows how to side-load apks who want all the information thrown at them at once.

  • Anonimen

What android is minimum for this, i cant install on 2.3.3?

    • jjjameson

I don't know what's the minimum, but you CAN install it in 2.3.3. (personally tested).

      • Anonimen

        Tnx for info

  • Nexus4life

Hi, I downloaded the apk and installed, it says i'm on the latest version but it still looks like the old one. Am I missing something? I reinstalled, cleared data/cache,restarted phone. Any ideas anyone?

I understand the excitement but that wall of text on white on the "more" section hurts my eyes.

Still waiting for "hide/ignore/block app/dev" option for PlayStore, so painful to sort thru the top lists filled with 0-quality kids games :/

  • Влатко Стојанов

Seems like more clicks to get the same info. Or maybe its a habit...
However, i'm waiting for material Gmail!

0.o wow those screenshots look meh. not horable but not great L is just a so so ui.

  • M. Shaaban

I still haven't received the 4.8.22 update yet. Sometimes it happens with my Play Store to skip an update and receive the next one directly, but yet again I haven't received the 4.9.13 either. This roll out update system in Android is one of the few things I dislike about Android, I know I can side load the APK an all but still it's an annoying update system.

  • ron

Nice redesign even I don't like pushing half baked apps. I also HATE having to do more steps just to know when the last update was and the latest version !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • alan

  • apfannr1

A good thing about this new version is that they've changed the landscape view on tablets for the better, getting rid of the 2-pane style design.

Wonder when they will port the design over to Google Play on the desktop web.

  • Nitish Sharma

My olay store won't update automatically, yesterday I saw material design in my sister's phone's play store and saw its version which was 4.9.13, then I checked mine it said 4.8.20 then I touched the version info, it said google play store is upto date, anyone knows whats the problem?

  • Manish Gurjar

Why there's a black color on the icon.. And the other icon on my playstore?.
When my tab was factory reset, and i open the playstore they won't able to update...
My old version is 4.3.11 then i download this apk 4.9.13 and now there's a black color on the icon..

  • AQ

There is nothing visible in the install process about an apps size, thats not right.

  • Bry Pas

Since the update, it seems that i'm having a problem downloading any app/games in Play Store. An Error code "941" always appearing when i try to download, is there anyone here facing the same problem here?

  • Xhulio Zyfi

Hey guys i need help I have a prestigio pap5044 i have like 200 mb left to install apps but since update i cant even install app that are less then 1 mb when i installed the update manually it did the same so unintalled the playstore 4.9 hoping they would fix it before rolling it out automatically now it is auto updated an i cant install or update any app i do have a fair amount of space left also after update apps will be sent to sd so it shouldnt use too much memory
Also the weird thing is that it says that there is insufficient storage without even downloading and attempting to install it first.
it just says it as soon as i click the install/update button pls help even just by telling we a way to stop my play store from auto updating would be fine thanks

  • Rage Nln

This latest update keeps telling me I have insufficient storage space when I try to download or update apps. I have to go into the app manager/play store and uninstall all updates to get it to work. Then it just updates on it's own again and I have to repeat the process. I have a Doogee Max DG650 Running Android 4.2.2 Any suggestions?

  • iAmAttila

Since the new design, I am seeing 60% less installs for my app on the same traffic volume. Instead of 10% of users converting, only 3-4% are converting into installs now. Great job google :)

  • http://on.fb.me/1lX8B3m sardanus

I have 3 different android devices with playstore 4.9.13: Galaxy S3, Xperia S and Moto G.
Every time I want to download new apps, the playstore shows "941 error". If i touch "install" again, it all works fine. It's just a riddiculous bug. Anyone else has this issue?

  • Paraneutral

Can someone help? I can't use the Play Store with this update. It crashes a few moments after the app opens, and I've tried getting rid of the cache and so on.

  • Ceph

Ever since the update it won't install apps to my sd card what the hell!
