The official Chromecast page has not thus far been a good resource for finding apps. It only listed a tiny fraction of the apps with Chromecast support, but now you can use the page to see all the apps. That's a lot of apps, but luckily you have search functionality now too.

Basically, Google has added some new tabs to the app discovery section. It you click on "More," the page shows you some popular Chromecast apps. Down at the bottom of the list you can click "Show More." You can do this over and over until you get bored. There's also a dropdown to filter apps for Android, desktop, and iOS.

The search tab is on the far right, and it too has the filter menu. Queries here will only search Chromecast-enabled apps, but it's just indexing the names. As such, it's not as robust as the full Play Store search. But hey, now you have an actual reason to go to the Chromecast site sometimes.

Interesting that they are under the Google Cast title. Possible name/brand change?

    • NF

Android TV also supports Google cast. It's just a more generic term to fit more devices.

The product is called the Chromecast. The SDK has always been called the Google Cast SDK and the YouTube videos talk about casting to devices "such as the Chromecast"

  • Matthew Bohr

And it also has Material style animations!

I don't understand why they don't make it such that any app that adds Chromecast ability will automatically be listed under this section? Once in a few months google will wake up and list apps that people already know about.

    • jose

How would they do that? They don't verify every app on the play store, so unless they created something like a permission for using chromecast (or relied on self reporting and have to deal with errors) they can't

      • DemandTrialByCombat

It should be pretty easy for them to auto detect if the app uses the google cast API and instantly list it under this section/tab.

      • joser116

I'm pretty sure there is a way for them to do that. They are Google after all.

They can have developers flag their apps as having Chromecast support, then Google just verifies it. Problem solved.

    • Kevin

I'm pretty sure they don't want to taint their image with all those shitty apps.

One of the Videostream guys here, they manually check each one to make sure it follows Chromecast guidelines including design and content :) There's now an easy to follow process to get your app listed.

    • niuguy

Yup, you missed the revamped part. Its not new. Its revamped.

      • Ramiro Fernandez

No, I got that. It was revamped to show all the apps:
"It only listed a tiny fraction of the apps with Chromecast support, but now you can use the page to see all the apps."

The "more" tab with all Chromecast apps has been available for some months now.

  • IrishSid

Been like that for ages AP. I think they even mentioned or linked to it somewhere during i/o.
AND they have the url on the chromecast screensaver wallpaper area thing.
