Update Wednesday has gotten off to a slow start, but there's a new Google Wallet version to get things moving. You can now use Wallet to manage your gift cards and request money. As usual, it's US only.

What’s New

  • Store gift cards and instantly check your gift card balance
  • Request money with the Google Wallet app
  • Send money for free using your debit card
  • Spanish language support
  • Update: Select gift cards will also be used to notify you when you're near an eligible store.

The gift card thing seems pretty neat – you can add any card to the app and produce the code at checkout. For select merchants like Best Buy and AMC, you can get instant updates on gift card balance. Requesting money is new for the Wallet app, but you can do the same thing with Gmail. Just pick a contact and send the request. They can pay you through wallet instantly and if not, the app lets you remind them. It's like the digital equivalent of clearing your throat with your palm out.

The APK is signed by Google and upgrades your existing app. The cryptographic signature guarantees that the file is safe to install and was not tampered with in any way. Rather than wait for Google to push this download to your devices, which can take days, download and install it just like any other APK.

    Canada awaits you, young one.

"That second one is US-only, though."

Isn't all of it US only?

    • RyanWhitwam

Yeah, Google's blog post was worded strangely.

Very nice update. Now to hunt down all those pesky gift cards and add them in.

    • yeshu

it recognizes visa gift cards. Thought i could get away by using them as debit cards. too bad, otherwise, this would have been a great way to manufacture spend!

  • TedPhillips

send money with debit card for free? could this be a harbinger of free credit transactions across the board? (or simply a proper debit, aka bank transaction) the language used there piqued my interest. How is this new? (does it avoid the middle step of having a wallet balance?)

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

I think the new part is the ability to request money.

  • vyktorsouza

lemme try NOT to mention that iPhone..
    ok too late

    • Josh Crumley

I like how the signal is much weaker on the iPhone. Google u so silly

      • vyktorsouza

        good catch XD

  • Zak Taccardi

I'm in the US, I just installed the new .apk (I see the gift card interface) - but I do not see the "Request Money" option. The support page says it should be in the My Wallet page - but I don't see it :(

  • Bob Omb

If someone sends you money does it go into your Wallet balance or straight into your debit card? I'm thinking of using this to collect rent/utils from house mates.

    • Zak Taccardi

your wallet balance - but you can transfer it to your bank account easily

      • Nasko Hristov

For a small amount of money.

      • Nasko Hristov

For a small amount of money I suppose.

        • Zak Taccardi

no, it's free to transfer to/from your bank account. Using a credit card is the only the time it costs $$

        • jm9843

No, transferring out to your bank account is free.

          https://support.google.com/wallet/answer/3122600

Receiving money, and transferring it to your bank account, is always free regardless of the funding source the sender chooses.

    • JD

Yeah you could. My wife and I use Google Wallet to give each other allowances Allowance each month.

You can also have Google send you a Google Wallet debit card that links directly to your wallet app its awesome I use GW for everything.

  • gk1984

Can I tap & pay on my AOSP-based HTC One M7 yet? Probably not... thanks Google...

    • JRomeo

      should have got a Nexus.

      • gk1984

I think my next one will be. I didn't before because Nexus 4 was six months old (about) when the M7 launched, I was due for a new (subsidized) phone on Sprint, and wanted to keep unlimited data with hopes of an improving network. The Nexus 5 launched many months after I got my M7, so that wasn't an option. But new Nexus hopefully this fall, I can trade up in Dec... it might just work out.

        • JRomeo

you'll never regret it. so many times i hear about people complaining about things that would have never been an issue if they had only got a nexus. I see this repeatedly.

      • tim242

Some people want more out of a phone than what a Nexus can offer.

        • Indianajonze

i dont see how that could be. what does your M7 offer that nexus does not?

          • tim242

I have a Galaxy S5. Skinned devices have always offered more than Nexus devices.

  • Nasko Hristov

I am just happy that Wallet is a survivor and may become true competitor to Paypal and I am not even going to complain about availability.

    • _artem_

when you're in Germany wallet icon isn't even visible, you can't launch that app even from titanium backup. but when you reset phone, don't insert your German sim card and don't connect to Internet (so the phone doesn't know that you're in Germany) you can open wallet however it asks you to login into your google account and if you do so you can't open this app again. so it's in no way a PayPal alternative

      • Nasko Hristov

That's why I said may become true competitor. If a given site has PayPal and wallet payment availabilities I will choose wallet.

Does anyone know how to use the NFC feature in Google Wallet?

I have tried using my Nexus 5 at 711 and other places to pay but nothing happens. Am I suppose to open the GW app or ?

    • miri

Yes. Just open the app, enter your pin then trap on the terminal.

    • tlingitsoldier

My nearby 7-11 quit supporting contactless payments, even though they still had the terminals for them. After searching around online, people noted that they had asked managers why Google Wallet wasn't working, and they were told that the store is no longer supporting it. Not too long after this research, the one nearby removed the NFC terminals.

Also, yes, you need to open it and enter your PIN before you can pay with your phone.

      • andy_o

You don't need to open it, it should open by itself. You just need to have the phone unlocked and with the screen on (there are custom roms and probably Xposed modules that allow NFC to be active w/ screen off too). Also you can disable the PIN, but that's up to oneself of course. I find it cumbersome, and easier to pay with a CC if I have to input the PIN every time.

  • Anthony Castanza

Just received a Gmail update as well, from 4.9 (1266230) to v4.9 (1271612)

Has the track package feature always been there? It's pretty badass

Dear Google. Please allow Wallet work with Mint so it doesn't screw up my budgets when I use it.

  • Andrew

Funny that the promo shots use best buy as they wouldn't let me use Gyft that does this same thing.

  • Ashish

Anyone know if it will do geofenceing for a reminder when you enter a retailers gift card?

    • Nicholas Polydor

"For certain gift cards, you can check your gift card balance in real-time and get reminders to use your card when you are near stores. Participating merchants with these features include:

      AMC
      Best Buy
      Nike
      Sephora
      Toys 'R' Us
      Whole Foods Market

      and many more"

      googlecommerce.blogspot.com/2014/07/manage-your-gift-cards-request-money.html

I can't find a comprehensive list on the http://support.google.com pages for either gift cards of the existing feature with loyalty cards.

Not sure why Best Buy gift cards are not working for @skitchbeatz:disqus.

      • http://www.androidpolice.com/ Artem Russakovskii

And here's what it looks like (courtesy of tipster Adam Wright).

        • Nicholas Polydor

Does that notification pop up on an Android Wear watch, @archon810:disqus? That would be really useful.

  • Kurt Wurmser

Wallet has proven to be a lot more useful than I thought it would be. Even with entering a PIN, I find it's easier to take out my phone than my wallet. The package tracking is a nice plus (though Google Now does it too). Nice to see they're still expanding it.

  • skitchbeatz

Strange. I added a Best Buy gift card but it won't auto update the balance.
