Here's a cool little Android "L" feature you may not have noticed - just bring up your lockscreen and swipe right. Boom. Dialer. This new shortcut, unlike the old camera gesture, does require that you enter your pin or unlock code before the dialer will actually open, but it's handy nonetheless.

You can, of course, alternatively swipe up on the dialer icon at the bottom of the lockscreen, too, though this is arguably quicker and definitely a bit more eyes-free in terms of getting the gesture right.

I assume lock screen widgets are gone then?

Having to do an extra swipe to unlock the phone when using a PIN or Pattern feels regressing...

    • Felipe Pimenta

I kinda like it. Sometimes I just want to quickly check my phone without having to unlock it.

But if you're in a 'trusted environment' then authentication can be bypassed altogether.

I already do that b/c Maximized Lockscreen Widgets, the trade-off is worth it imo.

You can't swipe up from the dialer icon in the lockscreen.

You probably had the app open and unlocked the device, leading you to believe that's where you were sent.

    • Ryan Behmanesh

Huh? There's literally an icon right there in the bottom left. Why would it not be a shortcut?

      • Paul_Werner

Same as how the icon currently for camera on the lock screen isn't a shortcut button but requires swiping

  • Simon Belmont

Hmm. It'd be really nice if we could turn this swipe to the right off, and get lock screen widgets back.

Or at least configure the app that opens when you swipe to the right. I rarely use the dialer.

I'll really hate if lock screen widgets are lost in this update... at least for a little bit while I adjust to the new OS

    • Roh_Mish

I rarely use dialler. And when I need it, its right there on my home screen dock. Why put the dialler in lock screen where anybody can use my phone to call anyone.

I hope the app lockscreen policy (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wordpress.chislonchow.deviceadminkeyguard ) will still allow to remove the dialer/camera icon/shortcut.
Someone can test it please ?

  • Alvin Brinson

Wow, yet another way to butt dial everyone.

  • nxtiak

I don't like this, I'm so used to swiping right to unlock, now the damn phone dialer appears.
Have to swipe UP to unlock phone now.

    Adobe Air ಠ_ಠ

1st lock screen widgets are gone next home screen widgets will be gone. I guess the rumors of Android losing its widgets to become more iOS like are coming true.

  • coolsilver

Can they at least move the Emergency Dial button away from the bottom of the damn screen so I don't bump it after hitting my home button on S4 trying to grapple the phone out my pocket?

  • Fatal1ty_93_RUS

The colors in the dialer are just.... too much. White background, cyan buttons, yellow tab highlight...
