Android 4.4.3 hit Nexus devices last week, and now the Paranoid Android folks are hard at work packing the latest version of KitKat into their custom ROM. Today they're ready to show off the fruits of their labor in the form of the first release candidate for Paranoid Android 4.4.

This release includes not only the goodies found in 4.4.3 but a few other niceties as well. Users will get to experience changes made to Hover. For those who don't remember this impressive notification enhancement, here's a video from the feature's earlier days.

In addition, the developers will maintain compatibility with the upstream CyanogenMod Theme Engine. The Paranoid OTA app also has a brighter, bolder new design.

To download the latest version, just head over to the Paranoid Android website and look for the correct link for your device. People jumping up from the previous release will need to flash a new bootloader, radio, and gapps, then update to the latest recovery before proceeding.

    Awesome rom as always!

ParanoidAndroid has outrun CM !! And for good reason.

    • Nick

Sort of... I think PA is so much more innovative, but the bugs I am experiencing are making me go back to CM. Once PA becomes more stable I will go come back.

      • Daniel Traynor

        What bugs?

  • AJKahn

PAs innovations are something that Google should learn from. These guys are amazing!

    • APOI

      AOKP too

  • Chris

Ah damn it I saw this screenshot and go so excited it was the Note 4...

  • Sean Cummins

Every day I become more and more depressed about being stuck with only TouchWiz ROMs. Sigh.

    • Gagan Deep Singh

Same here. This GS4 i9500 just does not have stable rom releases.

      • hh

If there is anything I have learned myself it is to never ever buy a device with an soc other than a Qualcomm. TI is out of the business, and Exynos and Tegra are horribly supported for open source use. Of course, you could buy a nexus: but I prefer other hardware.

  • Paweł Zadrożny

PA is doing such a great job and they made their ROM so much better than feature-packed CM. It is so simple, polished and yet, their features seem to be deeply planned. Keep up the great job PA team ! Never going back to CM and stock :)

    • Daniel Traynor

      Agreed 100%

    • usaff22

The recent bug with Chrome force-closing on the latest PA has made me want to go back to stock...

      • Akash

Are you talking about the latest 4.4.3 build or the one before that? Coz that was happening on the one before. I'm on omni right now and would like to know if I can switch back to PA

        • usaff22

          Latest one, 4.4.3

      • Paweł Zadrożny

What FC on Chrome are You talking about? Haven't had any so far...

        • Noob

It might be a Nexus 5 bug only.
Here, you can only open websites you click through Google Now. If you enter anything in the browser and click enter, instant force close.

          • jonzey231

It has been happening ALLLLL DAY to me on Nexus 4. It only happens if I click on a url that preloads. If i just type "android police" then click on the google link to actually get to the site, it doesn't force close.

          • AJKahn

It's a widely known bug, check the XDA thread. I have started using Firefox till this get fixed, or root caused at least. Could be a bad flash of GAPPS. I can still work around it so I'll wait till RC2. Although the ROM is really solid. First time PA 4.x user, used 'em when they came up with Hybrid a long time ago.

          • Nick

It's not. I have a couple of other bugs too but I'm on D2LTE and I'm not quite sure where to report them.

      • evol1knobi

Do you really go to google.com on chrome to search? Why not just search within the address bar and you won't see the force-close.

        • usaff22

So many less features, no copy URL, no open in new tab... the list goes on. Much prefer Chrome, since I open it anyway.

          • evol1knobi

Meant mobile chrome. The force close only happens when you type google.com. Other than that, searching or entering anything in the address bar works fine.

          • usaff22

Not for me - for me, whenever you tap a suggestion in the omnibox it crashes.

          • Kylecore

i hate it when people type google.com in the omni bar..
Its a facepalm moment every time i see it.

          • evol1knobi

            Totally agree....

      • grumpyfuzz

Just download another browser until the next build, or go back to stock.

      • Ayysir_PA

        already fixed for next release

      • Q

        Chrome sucks.

    • Brandon Jiang

lol CM has like no features.

      • AOSPrevails

CM have no features over GravityBox AFAIK, so if you wanted to flash CM you might as well stay stock and go Xposed+GravityBox.

          GB > any ROM

        • gnm

Most phones dont get stock Android.

          • AOSPrevails

Then get one with stock Android, instead of mimicing AOSP on a custom skinned phone.

    • APOI

Now a days anything is better than CM , but does PA is better Than AOKP ?

  • Josh P.

    I miss my N4.... :/

  • Abraham

I've been happy with my stock rooted Nexus 5. Yet, I've been looking for something like this. I miss my AOKP SMS popup from my old EVO.

This is making me want to start flashing ROM's again. XPOSED has kept me at bay, but this is not there. Tempting, tempting...

    • Kylecore

You should also just pull the sms apk from AOKP and install it.
try evolve sms, it has pop up to reply built in and is so pretty

  • Maranello Santiago

Remember the days when they were based off CM? They've came into their own, hopefully more teams will do that. I'm not a CM hater though. Hopefully everyone will bring nice innovations. Pay attention, Google.

  • Dan Owen

    No Hybrid, No PA.

Hybrid is their premiere feature imo, without Hybrid it's not PA to me.

    • grumpyfuzz

They said this build is a pre stable build or something like that to prepare for the release of Hyrbid :]. Too bad Tablet UI won't be coming back, though.

    • Ayysir_PA

too bad ya'll not paying us to work 24/7

      • Dan Owen

Didn't mean it like that, Hybrid is the absolute best feature of any android rom out there period. PA as of now is great, but Hybrid IS PA, what I associate PA with more than anything.

        • Ayysir_PA

i know, its hard though because we're trying to take it to the next level but we dont have the man power to execute features with swiftness like CM. Usually one or two devs takes the reigns on the project we make i.e hover. Just sit tight

          • APOI

Thanks for all the Developments Guys :)

  • http://www.vinsonimages.com yamaha83

blah! wish i could get this for my motoX...

    • grumpyfuzz

they have pa for moto x, so you can get it. Unless you have verizon moto x on 4.4.2, then you're right, you can't.

      • http://www.vinsonimages.com yamaha83

yup,,, i have VZ motoX on 4.4.2.... :(

        • grumpyfuzz

maybe update to 4.4.3 when vz gets it will have an exploit so you can bypass locked bootloader. would be nice haha

          • http://www.vinsonimages.com yamaha83

not going to hold my breath... but ill go ahead and cross my fingers and toes!!

        i have VZ motoX on 4.4.2.... :(

  • vict90

This is so long the best rom all over the Android world. PA team worked hard and the result is just AWESOME

  • Matthew Fry

I cannot even access the ROM page. They must be getting hit pretty hard.

  • BigMixxx

are we gonna get the paranoid android setting back?

  • Drew Freyling

I find it very strange you could call something a "release candidate" so soon after 4.4.3 came out on AOSP...

  • Chris Ford

PA is incredible, but the lack of simple customization options like changing the Nav Bar buttons and size keeps me away.

  • https://plus.google.com/+SamanthaGobert/ Samantha Gobert

If any one wants the theme in the image

  • hp420

4.4 beta 1 brought FAR more bugs on my Nexus 4 that I can possibly count, and now they released a new rom with an android version bump without even beta testing it....what the hell are they doing?!?!?!?! I'm going back to official AOSP...I've never seen so many issues with PA before.

  • Ahmed Faiz

new build running solid here. been a pa user for almost two years now first time seeing n5 xda thread closed for non topic issues posted. but paranoid users will be always paranoid!
that thread really need a clean up. waiting for the hybrid engine now.

  • Martin Hofschweiger

Is there any chance to get the Hover Feature as a Xposed Framework Module with Stock Rom?
