Action Launcher developer Chris Lacy has rolled into the latest beta a feature that just appeared in Nova Launcher two days ago. After signing up for the beta and getting everything good to go, just hop over into the app's settings to toggle the feature on. From then on, you can say "OK Google" from the homescreen to have it pull up a Google search a la the Google Now Launcher.

Action1 Action2 Action3

That's not all the beta has up its sleeve. There are other visual tweaks buried in the settings, such as the option to enable the Roboto Condensed font and controls over where text labels are displayed. Users can also double-tap empty space on the homescreen to put the phone to sleep.

Chris Lacy uses the Play Store to manage the app's beta. For those unfamiliar with the process, here are his instructions.

Assuming you have bought the app, installing the beta is simple (note: you must sign up with the same account that was used to purchase the app):

  1. Join the Action Launcher Google+ Community.
  2. Opt in to the beta group on Google Play.
  3. Update to the latest beta via the Play Store app the way you would any normal app.

Update: You need a device with Android 4.4 for the "OK Google" hotword to work. If it doesn't work for you with the Google Now Launcher, it won't work here.

FYI: Hotword detection is for 4.4+ only.

    • Luqmaan Mathee

No I used it on 4.1 for a while.

    • Harvie Boles

      nope

    • Kostas

In nova it works on 4.1.2 too... I 'm guessing this is the case here as well, although the article says otherwise... Don't have the time to install action launcher again to confirm though...

Changelog in Action Launcher say 4.4+ only.

I am in the beta and the update has been released like, when, yesterday? But still I don't see the update.

Check the beta group link. I was no longer a tester for some reason.

I wish they would add the option to swipe the desktop to go to google now.

This isn't going to happen until Google releases the code to developers that allows this. Until then it's not possible.

      • Jeremy Martin

I disagree. Kcin launcher allows for you to do it now. Granted its not exactly like how GNL (cannot swipe to the right to exit GN) handles it but you can swipe to the far left desktop to get to Google Now. It can be done without the source code.

I had to disable the double-tap to sleep because it interferes with Muzei. :)

I don't use Action Launcher but if it allows desktop gestures you can set one to (Shortcut) Secure Settings>Lock Device. Needs the app "Secure Settings" of course.

This launcher was falling back from favor specially after Nova latest update but seems Cris Lacy is not sleeping. Great update.

  • Matthew Fry

Was I expelled from the beta? No update on my devices.

This update would have made action launcher my main again if he had integrated hotword detection into 1-swipe and made it active across all apps
