The mid-range market continues to expand into larger and larger handsets, and Sony doesn't want to be left behind. To that end, they've announced the Xperia T3, a 5.3-inch Android phone with an awesome industrial design, but internals that will leave hardware buffs wanting more. The star of the show is an all-steel body that's admirably thin at just 7mm. It will be available globally in late July.

Move past the admittedly pretty body (available in white, black, or purple), and you'll see hardware that's shooting for the bottom of the mid-range. First, the large "Triluminous" LCD screen is only 720p, meaning it will be noticeably less sharp (227 PPI) than most of the other phones at that size. Inside is a 1.4Ghz quad-core processor with just 1GB of RAM, a paltry 8GB of storage space plus MicroSD card slot, and a 2500mAh non-removable battery, which is impressive given the skinny body. The rear camera and front-facing cam are 8MP and 1.1MP, respectively. Don't look for any of the water resistance found on the more high-end Sony models.

Software is KitKat with Sony's usual additions, mostly focused on various camera tricks and the company's gaming and media empire. The phone is a looker, to be sure, as are most Sony designs. That and the large screen could mean good sales, if the price is appropriate for the mediocre hardware. We'll see when it comes to market.

  • Godspoken

    Man, I love Sony's hardware, it's beautiful.

    • Abhijeet Mishra

And amazingly bad at ergonomics, at least on those glass flagships like the Z1 and Z2. Overly large, slippery glass, too blocky. It's like zero thought goes into ergonomics. Even the M8, which I recently bought, is pretty bad at ergonomics, but only because of the slippery back. Makes a case very important, probably why HTC put one inside the box. :D

      • WhyWai

I like glass more than metal. glass feels closer to skin which is comfortable. metal is cold and feel alienated.

        • Abhijeet Mishra

I wasn't talking about the feel though, it's about how it is to handle devices with glass and slippery metal. Neither is good on big devices, especially for one-hand usage.

  • Ambroos

Price in Belgium will be €299.

  • Jephri

Key point here is price. 299 when it launches on Tmobile June 30th.

    • Andrew

Yeah or get the One Plus One which has 23094203948x better hardware...and cyanogenmod...for exactly the same price..

      • Elmir Buljubasic

And tell me how without the invitation?

        • Andrew

Well correct me if I'm wrong, but if this isn't coming until June 30th, the One Plus One should already be open if not really close to open to buy without invite..

          • Nicklas

Where did you hear that? As far as i know they have no plans on ditching the invitation system.

          • WhyWai

correction: you are wrong on June 30 part.

          • Andrew

Oh sorry its releasing even later than that.

      • Jephri

This is not a phone built to excite the minds and hearts of us Android power users. The ideal customer here is a price conscious customer who wants a phablet but balks at the high cost of the Note 3 or GFlex. It will be a big seller on Magenta with middle aged and older customers as well as the young cash strapped. At this price point it isn't competing with the S5, One and G3, it is competing with the LG l90, gallaxy s3 and Alcatel's ilk.

      • Matthew Fry

The 1+Bacon doesn't have 21 Exabytes of RAM nor does it have a 67 gigaamp battery. Stop spreading lies. :-D

        • Andrew

          Oh. Must a been a rumor ;)

  • J N

Its better for sony to shift from snapdragon to mediatek, which will lower cost per product n can give good sales growth in mid range market..
