So, Google posted this 'An Android Wear Design Story' thing that's probably moderately interesting if you want some insight into app development on Android Wear and the process of designing an experience appropriate for a smartwatch, but the only thing I came out of that post not being able to forget was this. Freaking. Photo.

moto1

My reaction is best summarized by the timecoded YouTube clip below.

The Moto 360 is huge. Like, Tag Heuer's Jumbo Jerk Chronometer Collection huge. No wonder they're promising always-on battery life, because it's the size of a Sizzler side-salad plate.

Anyway, the post in question talks about the development of a concept app for walking tours on Android Wear, and if you're interested in what the developers behind it crafted and the experience they had creating said app, it's a good, solid read. Check it out at the link below.

  • Matthew DiGiacomo

    "Prototype"

    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ David Ruddock

Oh yeah, the production version is getting lipo. Not.

      • Matthew DiGiacomo

We don't know for sure how early of a prototype this is though..

      • http://tiboine.com/ Tor Ivan Boine

        remember google glass version 0.1?

        • http://www.androidpolice.com/ David Ruddock

You honestly think they're going to make the display smaller? OK.

          • Nick

I honestly think it's a possibility. Assuming that they're not going to change from the prototype is silly.

          • heyooo

You guys are pretty hostile towards your readers

          • Freak4Dell

David has always been somewhat cynical and sarcastic. Hilarious on a personal level, but it is slightly offputting on professional level. But hey, the personalities of the AP staff is half the reason I even read this site. Otherwise, what separates them from any of the other dozens of Android blogs that post the same things?

          • Grizzly Atoms

You work for this website? You are acting like a dickburger in these comments.

          • http://www.about.me/kendallseabury Kendall Seabury

Prototype hardware is made to be taken apart, therefore bulky. it's not polished.

          • Stylus_XL

The model of the Moto 360 seen here looks bigger than what we've seen Moto employees wearing on their wrists up to this point. Whilst I probably would put my money on this new footage being closer to the final market version, belittling people for rationally suggesting the contrary is a dick move.

          • dkbnyc

Did be edit his comment? I'm looking for the post where he is " belittling people for rationally suggesting the contrary".

          • RajivSK

Well first off, I don't blame David at all, everyone can have a cranky mood. You on the other hand are just being a wise ass. Suggesting the difference in size is due to it being a prototype is perfectly rational. David in response ridicules this suggestion by saying lipo is the only way for the production model to be any smaller. Which does not further the debate one bit and only serves to strengthen his own position by belittling the intellectual capacity of the original poster. Oh yeah, I am completely aware that this post will fall on deaf ears. I don't care.

          • bbch80

Is acting like a douchebag a requirement for Android Police writers?

          • Ian Fay

It's an Internet comment system, so yes.

          • Mike

            ...It's labeled Prototype.

Prototype mobile hardware is almost *always* larger than the finished product. The reason, as others have already said, is that this hardware is meant to be disassembled easily. The units they've had for PR events and such are much smaller, which is much closer to the final product.

Maybe you should spend less time being hostile toward the readers that pay your salary and more time doing research.

          • dkbnyc

Where was he "being hostile toward the readers". and you think you pay his salary? LMAO!

          • http://tonybullard.com/ Tony Bullard

Without readers there's no ad revenue...

          • Slurms

            ^ THIS

      • http://turbofool.com Jarrett Lennon Kaufman

Considering this looks dramatically larger than it does in every other photo we've seen AND it says prototype on it? Yes, it does honestly seem very likely that this was one of their test units designed for easy tinkering and fast build. I do honestly doubt this is the size of the final unit.

      • Josh Crumley

Care to place a wager on that David?

  • Jdban

Quick someone use photoshop and angles to tell us exactly how big it is.

    • Tim Zhang

Just did it. If that's a 15 inch macbook pro, then the watch has a 1.8 inch diameter. The forearm of the guy is about 15 inches long.

  • Wise Canuk

Well I DID want one :-(

    • Coollead

I actually want one now, if it's tha size. I wear large face watches, they look better on me. Look at any Diesel watch, they're huge.

  • ANOTHERFAKEACCOUNT

and I thought its going to look like a normal watch, oh well

  • Sean Cummins

Welp, that'll save me some money.

  • http://www.about.me/kendallseabury Kendall Seabury

    • Karan O

      that's what she said!

      • http://www.about.me/kendallseabury Kendall Seabury

Karen O will be here all week.

  • Kent Andersen

    Thats what she said...

  • Jondan Rothfus

Would the devices being prototype make any difference at all in the size of the watch? I noticed both being huge, but in some of the other videos we've seen, neither stood out to me as being as humongous as these images depict.

    • Brendan

Absolutely, as prototypes are designed to be easily disassembled. Production models will have much tigher everything and be significantly smaller.

  • http://www.droid-life.com/ Steve B

I guess they guy in the picture could have really small wrists...

  • Marshall Zanella

I was expecting the screen to be the size of a half dollar. Maybe a little bigger but DAYUM thats huge.

    • Matthew DiGiacomo

A half dollar? That would be small as hell.

      • Marshall Zanella

Its about the same size as the pebble. More or less.

  • Lars Pfau
    • http://www.androidpolice.com/ David Ruddock

It still looks pretty damn big to me.

      • xsirxx

Hey if yer gunna geek it out, GEEK IT OUT!

      • Lars Pfau

I don't know what you expected though. I mean, there are many watches out there that are that exact same size or even bigger.

        • Joshua Hill

From all the initial photos it looked much smaller than this. So we were expecting a watch smaller than this. Not sure what you expected people to expect in such a situation!

      • http://www.about.me/kendallseabury Kendall Seabury

Looks pretty close to the LG watch.

        • http://www.androidpolice.com/ David Ruddock

The difference is that the Moto 360 is substantially wider because of the shape, which gives it a bigger footprint on your forearm. The G Watch does look pretty big, too, for a rectangular device.

          • wicketr

To me a watch "being to big" all depends on the thickness. I have a pretty large designer watch and it doesn't feel bad at all considering it's extremely thin. Basically the more flush it is to the arm, the better.

      • Grizzly Atoms

Some people prefer a watch face that is large in diameter.

      • james fuston

This just totally killed my motivation to buy a 360. I really hope they drop all that black space on the face.

        • http://www.vinsonimages.com yamaha83

i think the black space you are talking about is still part of the screen. you can see where it says "continue tour" below the green cirlce

          • james fuston

I'm aware it's part of the screen. I think it's unnecessary space.

          • untitled

look back to the image on top, the bezels are remarkably thin... If you're referring to the black bar on the bottom, its the nav bar, so not unnecessary?

      • Guest

I think they watched Top Secret! too many times

      • joser116

        It looks thick to me

      • Pk

        That's what she said.

    • http://www.droid-life.com/ Steve B

Uh...sorry, but that thing is huge.

    • Lars Pfau
      • james fuston

I guess if photo angles work for slimming people, they also work for slimming watches.

      • http://www.twitter.com/b_boogey_xl b_boogey_xl

That's what I thought. Guess I'm just one of this people that will wait till Motorla themselves reveals the final product.

      • dkbnyc

Have you noticed that watch isn't on?

        • kashtrey

When Wicks (Duarte as well) was wearing his during one of the initial videos, it was about the same size as the smaller pics and also lighting up. Is it so inconceivable to believe that they are either experimenting with different screen sizes or that the clearly marked prototype is bigger.

          • Bob Omb

Or that it's very difficult to tell how large a watch is because the wearer's wrist size will make the biggest difference on perception of size.

          • http://planetmew.com/blog/ Christopher Glass

Moto 360 is only demoed on giants to trick regular-size consumers.

      • Luca

        He is gigantic!!!!

        • Kenny

          Hand of Hodor

      • Joshua Hill

Thankyou, so why that other post asking what ppl expected?

    • WORPspeed

I like big watch faces, but this might be the upper limit for me...luckily I got the wrist to pull em off....if you got a thin wrist..it might look really weird and wrong.

So far this is on my to-buy list

    • dkbnyc

Are you kidding? Both those watches are HUGE. They are bigger than the Galaxy Gear I'm wearing. Unless those fellas have lady sized arms and wrist, those devices would be prefect for those times you need an extra dinner plate

    • Christopher Robert

I like big watches. I'm cool with this. Especially if that is mostly screen.

  • jonathan3579

    Umm... Bigger is better?

  • htowngtr

That's why I said I'd want to see it on the wrist vs LG watch.

  • jamaall

Hey, this thing needs to display readable information to you. Did you think it was gonna be small?

  • Mike Gonzalez

maybe it's the angle, cuz there's a GIF in the blog post and doesnt look that huge

  • Defenestratus

    Love it.

  • Mystery Man

The watch on Matias wrist did not look that big? Was that not a moto 360?

  • Shane Redman

I'm convinced.....this developer is a dwarf....he has small hands and wrists....he has to! This has to be so!

  • slurivariv

The more I see the LG watch, the more I like it. I don't really care too much about the 360 size, but the LG watch looks really good in these shots.

  • Jonathan Zelayandia
  • Mlibbey

I'm confused, didn't we already see Duarte & someone else wearing one but wouldn't show us the screen? Why is this so much bigger?

    • Grizzly Atoms

This just in, some peoples wrists are skinnier than others.

      • Mlibbey

This just in, Duarte is a pretty small guy therefore it would have been bigger on his wrist than this persons wrist if anything

        • Jason E Perkins

This just in: the picture in the article is of a prototype.

          • Mlibbey

This just in, id actually rather the larger one so I hope it stays like that

          • Jason E Perkins

This just in: me too. I prefer my watches oversized. Plus, I'd like to be able to read the screen.

          • Matthew Fry

This just in: I don't actually have anything to add I just wanted to participate...

          • http://www.bordersweather.co.uk/ Andy J

This just in: I totally read that in Zoidberg's voice!!

  • kashtrey

Though I find this post funny, it's labeled a prototype and all the other times we've seen prototypes out on people like Duarte or Wicks, they've seemed large but reasonable and not nearly as big as in this picture. Either the guy in this video has tiny wrists or they've played with different screen sizes to try and balance screen space to watch size.

  • Chris Thompson

Well considering the image says prototype on it, and the video (or blog page) is about the concept of designing the Android Wear (or Moto360) i wouldn't take this for the end result.

  • NF

It looks slightly larger than a regular watch, but I don't think it's going to be too noticeable.

  • http://www.bordersweather.co.uk/ Andy J

I'm more concerned that "A few weeks ago, Timothy and I were chatting about designing apps for wearables to validate some of the content we’re planning for Google I/O 20141. " this coming from "Roman Nurik and Timothy Jordan, Design and Developer Advocates on Android Wear" - they are only now learning how to write Android Wear apps? Surely by this point they should know all the ins and outs of the system, it's limitations, it's workarounds? I/O is just around the corner, they are starting to cut it just a bit fine don't you think?!

    • Armando Rodriguez

Well the post is from today but that doesnt mean they did the app yesterday.

      • http://www.bordersweather.co.uk/ Andy J

True - but the blog starts with "a few weeks ago"

  • http://about.me/barrae Maximiliano Barra E.

    WHAT.
    No, seriously.

  • Badouken

Next year we will see a 5in model!!! Then see reports all over the web that wearable tech is indeed "Growing".

  • dude

Same thing they said about the Galaxy Note and 5" screen phones.

    • Matthew Fry

      And they were right :-P

  • Anthony Tyson

    Huge yet damn sexy.

  • David Mendívil

I will need to grow an forearm like that

  • humulos

The dumbwatch currently upon my wrist is that big, so no problems here!

  • David Mendívil

I will need to grow an forearm like his

    • Fatal1ty_93_RUS

      "An forearm"?

  • Daniel Rodriguez

Doesn't look that huge in the other picture, and the guy appears to have super skinny arms on top of it. Either way, I'm getting one. I don't mind huge.

    • kashtrey

That's what she said. But ya, I think it's either angles, a small wrist, or a prototype with a larger display.

  • Rovex

Always preferred the square designs anyway. The trouble with round, as we can see, is that they look huge, and when they are thick they look even more huge. It looks like 2 giant Oreos stuck together.

I rather glad it looks so stupid, I was going to get the G Watch anyway.

  • Karan O

i can use "that's what she said" in literally any comment reply but ain't nobody got time fo dat!
dayum girl that's big! [don't do that here]

  • Dave Courtemanche

      FLAIVA-FLAAAAAAAAIVE

  • remister

My Nixon watch is that big, BRING IT ON!

  • anon

    looks like he's wearing Nest...

  • Mark G

I always laugh at people's poor understanding of what's possible and what's not possible with today manufacturing processes.

Quite clearly displays have to be square, or a really big bezel to make it look round. (take a look at Nest for example).

All those Apple fake iWatch renders. Go dream some more, flexible displays are very new, and barely flexible, nothing like a wristband flexibility. Right now, the only people with the know-how to make something even vaguely good looking in the wearables sector is Sony with the SW2.

    • kashtrey
      • Fatal1ty_93_RUS

Damn, Moto has made so many awesome and futuristic phones back in the day

    • Luca

Recently I worked on a screen which isn't square at all.. It has rounded corners and the custom linux kernel "know" that. if you try to put an element on the top left corner, it is aware where the screen ends

  • http://www.thepixelpuse.com/ Aj Meadows

I don't see what the big deal is. Realistically, this is probably how big the watch needs to be in order to fit a large enough battery to power it for a decent amount of time. I can't imagine why anyone would complain about having something that large and sexy on their wrist? It just screams "That's right, I'm a fuckin' smart-watch." to me. I'm okay with that.

  • http://www.twitter.com/joshuaworth Joshua Worth

Seriously that LG is looking better now.

  • Chaz

Yes!!!! I LIKE BIG WATCHES. THANKS MOTO!

  • ImSteevin

flavor flav is going to take it off the band and put it around his neck

  • Crispin Swickard

Can someone poorly dub watches throughout the video, and reupload it? For the lulz

  • hairyback

Damn, I used to think that was such a sexy looking watch. Now it just looks like this

  • Chipsy4

Well either the guy has slim wrists/arms or it's an early prototype. By now we have seen working models being worn by the lead designer of the Moto 360 and it looks significantly smaller.

  • Oobiewan

Holy. Fuck. It's Android Facewear. Or Buttwear. Bearwear.

  • Anon

The angle on the first shot makes it look a bit wider than it is due to the perspective shift from it's height. Based on all of the clear promo shots, the production 360's diameter will be almost exactly double the width of the plain leather strap.

Assuming that the strap is a standard 20 - 22mm width strap, that puts the diameter of watch face itself at around 40-44mm (1.575 - 1.732 inches). For comparison, the diameter of a US half dollar is 30.6mm (1.2 inches).

It will definitely be a big watch, but shouldn't be too unreasonable.

    • Bob Omb

40mm is right about averge diameter for men's watches these days.

  • Matthew Fry

Wow that's crappy video quality. Thankfully, All Access has it. 90's rap is my favorite rap.

  • James Aaron Anteola

    http://www.phonearena.com/news/The-Moto-360-features-an-orientation-free-1.8-inch-display-and-more_id54095

says on the link above that it is 46mm (1.8inch). im wearing a watch that is 1.5 inches, so i guess its not that big. i drew a 1.8 inch circle, then cut it out, i think its ok.

i hope the one on the photo is a prototype, or maybe they have different sizes. anyways, still saving for this..

  • Tiago Pestana

I like it :D i want to see my notifications and the display and not using a magnifying glass

  • Guest

After seeing this picture, I think I like the square better. Doesn't cut off words, and more information fits.

  • nxtiak

After seeing this picture, I think I like the square better. Doesn't cut off words, and more information fits...

  • mjku

Maybe the person wearing it has dainty little wrists...

  • n0th1ng_r3al

I really can't believe people thought the mockup would look like the actual watch. Even with miniaturization you still have a lot of shit to cram into a watch.

    Looks just right

    Samsung Note 360?

  • Heimrik

Actually large face watches are quite the trend currently.....

  • JCD

What happened with the "normal" size Motorola's people were using it in interviews?

  • wanker

Tag Heuer's Jumbo Jerk Chronometer Collection? I'm not a watch fan, but I do want to know more about Jumbo Jerking.

  • Todd Yates

There are a number of sources that give the dimenions as 46mm, e.g. https://gigaom.com/2014/03/19/10-things-i-learned-about-the-moto-360-smartwatch/. I think this is just a trick of perspective and thin arms. 46mm is large, but not outrageous, my current watch is exactly that width (G-Shock GW2310). I'm still in for a 360, looks sexy as hell.

  • JG

You know... That song has been out for almost 22 years 1 month now... and I don't think I've ever seen the video for it till just now...

  • Ddyracer

good lord its a prototype. not final. lets not judge so quickly

  • hp420

I don't want a dinner plate on my wrist. With a single picture I just lost all interest in this gargantuan behemoth!

  • nikolas

I think one of the designers said that it would have 46mm (1.8 inches) diameter in an interview with Josh from theverge

  • http://iron2000.blogspot.com/ iron2000

Makes me think of G-Shock and Baby-G.
Maybe theres going to be a Moto 360 Lite? :P

  • Fatal1ty_93_RUS

    Now THAT's what I call a watch

  • Zimmerman

I think this particular watch is a prototype.

  • Richard Markert

My current watch is 40mm. A 40mm Moto 360, or even 45mm, would be fine with me.

  • frafri

    too big !!
